BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

Some leading figures in African American literary studies have wondered out loud whether such transnational approaches signal “an end” to African American litera - ture as a distinct œuvre: in 2011, Kenneth Warren suggested that “the turn to dias - poric, transatlantic, global, and other frames indicates a dim awareness that the boundary creating this distinctiveness has eroded” (8). -

Brophy1 Abstract ABlack Power in a Prison Library@ focuses on a list of 90 books on the black experience in America that were ordered added to the Marion, Ohio Correctional Institution in 1972. It uses the list as a way of gauging what books the plaintiffs (and thus the court) thought were essential to telling the African American experience. And in that way, we can use the list to reconstruct the contours of the bibliographic world of the African American experience in the early 1970s. The list reflects an interest in history of slavery, Reconstruction and Jim Crow, the literature of the Harlem Renaissance, the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, and contemporary works on Black Power. Notably thin is prison literature. Together the books help form a picture of the critique of law made by Black Power writers and the ways those claims built on historical, sociological, and civil rights literature. -

Detloff _____________________________________ Graduate School Representative Dr. Marguerite Shaffer ABSTRACT ALLUDING TO PROTEST: RESISTANCE IN POST WAR AMERICAN LITERATURE Jamie Calhoun This dissertation traces a distinctive form of literary citation in the late twentieth century and proposes that a number of important late twentieth century works reuse essentialist and possibly racist discourse to create more humane and ethical concepts of selfhood. The texts in this dissertation “play” with and critically engage with the notion of the “other” through intense allusion and citation of dominant literary and cultural narratives in order to resist the exclusionary, dominant ideology of American selfhood. My project focuses on four such novels – Maxine Hong Kingston’s Tripmaster Monkey, Thomas King’s Green Grass Running Water, Percival Everett’s Erasure, and Robert Coover’s The Public Burning – which redeploy narratives that represent ethnic minorities in racist and essentialist ways. For example, Maxine Hong Kingston builds her novel around the writings and performances of Walt Whitman, Sui Sin Far, Frank Chin, and the nineteenth century “Siamese Twins,” Chang and Eng Bunker. Alluding to Far’s idealized Eurasian “one family,” Chin’s authentic ethnic self, and the exotic “other” represented by the Bunker twins, Kingston critiques and reformulates essentialist discourse to produce an anti-racist subject. The chapter on Percival Everett’s Erasure traces a similar critique of resistance as Everett draws on aspects of both sides of an historical African American dialectic between separatism and universalism. -

C i h ^ ° i° 313 U T^g oMfij- fi^fu^cs 2*>\lh 93 David Lamont Landes—Beloved Disability Rights Activist and City College Economics Instructor (1941-2008) Up out of the Mississippi Delta in and around Bluesman BB King territory, David Lamont Landes was bom in 1941. His parents Art and Margaret Landes worked as organizers on the Delta Cooperative Farm in Clarksdale, (Coahoma County) Mississippi and with the Southern Tenant Farmer’s Union in Abbeville, South Carolina. In 1946, David’s family moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio. Following graduation from Bryan High School in 1960, David attended Swarthmore College. In 1961 he transferred to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The next year he survived a spinal cord injury and lived 46 more years as a spirited quadriplegic and disability rights activist. After graduating from Antioch in 1965, David attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received his Ph.D in Economics. He joined the faculty of San Jose State, in 1970 as part of a group of economists devoted to teaching economics relevant to the less affluent majority of the world. He was part of a group of radical economists “dismissed” from SJ State in 1974 and went on to become a “Freeway Flyer,” serving on faculties at Foothill, Indian Valley and Sonoma State. David was a founding member of the Union for Radical Political Economics (URPE). His life reflected the ways in which people with disabilities broke barriers and paved new avenues for social justice. He traveled extensively with the Disabled International Support Effort (DISE) to Nicaragua, El Salvador and Cuba, conducting workshops and delivering medical supplies.
