TRASLITTERAZIONI DAL GRECO Dal momento che il Dottorato in Lingue Letterature e Società moderne riunisce studiosi e ricercatori afferenti a cattedre di numerose lingue straniere, ho ritenuto opportuno traslitterare nel presente lavoro i caratteri greci. In particolare, i nomi delle personalità dotte di lingua greca sono seguiti dal nome italianizzato corrispondente, se presente nella tradizione bibliografica, altrimenti sono seguiti dalla semplice traslitterazione in caratteri latini. INTRODUZIONE La presente ricerca si propone di approfondire l’attività educativa, intellettuale e accademica degli esponenti della diaspora greca durante il XVII secolo, con particolare riferimento alla prima metà del Seicento. Non si è mai parlato di “comunità” greco patavina come per la confraternita greco veneziana, la comunità ellenica di Trieste o di altre realtà organizzate dal punto di vista religioso o sociale in diverse città della penisola italiana, ed è probabilmente a tal motivo che sino ad ora la ricerca ha spesso sottolineato poco audacemente l’importanza della formazione che numerosi greci ricevettero a Padova. Benché gli studi riguardo ai rapporti greco-veneti siano molto ampi e osservati dalla critica, il tema specifico è stato trattato soprattutto da esperti greci, i cui ultimi apporti riguardo al contesto padovano risalgono agli anni Settanta. Il tema non è quindi del tutto nuovo, ma non è mai stato ben affrontato in relazione all’impatto che l’attività degli intellettuali greci ebbe nell’ambiente culturale locale. Ho cercato dunque di affrontare il tema attraverso un approccio integrato, che potesse unire i dati provenienti dalle fonti greche con le informazioni contenute negli studi italiani relativi alla cultura locale della città e alla storia dell’Università di Padova. L’istituzione che attirava e riuniva attorno a sé gli studenti e gli intellettuali di lingua greca era infatti il noto Studium Patavinum, considerato come opportunità di formazione e di erudizione, e normalmente collegato ad altri ambienti culturali come l’Accademia dei Ricovrati o la Libreria dello Studio. Qui i greci, oltre a formare se stessi, ebbero un ruolo attivo anche nella formazione della loro coscienza nazionale, affermatasi compiutamente con la rivoluzione del 1821. Nomi come Κύριλλος Λούκαρις/Kirillos Lukaris (1572-1638) e Θεόφιλος Κοριδαλεύς/Theofilos Korydalleus (1570-1645), sono ben noti nell’ambito degli studi neogreci, ma molte altre furono le personalità di lingua greca culturalmente attive non solo una volta tornate nelle loro terre d’origine, ma anche rimanendo a Padova e inserendosi nella società locale, insegnando come docenti universitari e diventando collaboratori della Serenissima come ambasciatori, filologi e avvocati. Ho cercato quindi di mettere in luce alcune personalità meno note nell’ambito degli studi italiani, e di far risaltare il loro legame con l’ambiente intellettuale padovano o veneziano, come si può notare ad esempio dai documenti inediti che ho recuperato presso l’Archivio di Stato di Udine, dove si trova traccia dell’amicizia di Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia (1646- 1684), prima donna laureata al mondo, con il medico greco Γεώργιος Καλαφάτης/Giorgio Calafati (1652-1720). Gli esponenti della diaspora ellenica stabilitisi a Padova non si chiusero tuttavia soltanto nei loro circoli intellettuali e accademici, ma si occuparono altresì dei propri “connazionali”, come nel caso di Ιωσαφάτ Παλαιόκαπας/Giosafat Paleocapa e Ιωάννης Κωττούνιος/Giovanni Cottunio (1572-1657), che fondarono due collegi per giovani studenti greci proprio nella città del Santo. Sfruttando i risultati delle ricerche d’archivio finora esistenti e contribuendo personalmente al reperimento di alcuni documenti inediti, nel presente lavoro ho voluto tracciare la storia di queste due istituzioni, il collegio Paleocapa (dal 1633) e il collegio Cottunio (dal 1653). Spesso messi in secondo piano rispetto ai collegi greci S. Atanasio di Roma e Flangini di Venezia, le vicende dei collegi padovani risultano invece particolarmente interessanti, come esporrò nel secondo capitolo, oltre che dal punto di vista della storia dell’istruzione greca, anche dal punto di vista delle scelte in materia di politica ecclesiastica della Serenissima, poiché inserite nell’orbita delle complicate relazioni tra Venezia, la Santa Sede e il Levante ortodosso. Ho voluto inoltre approfondire, nel terzo e nel quarto capitolo, l’interessante figura di Giovanni Cottunio, esponente intellettuale di spicco tra i greci patavini della prima metà del XVII secolo. Anche in questa fase ho cercato di procedere attraverso la sistematica integrazione dei contributi di studiosi greci sull’argomento con altre opere di storia locale e letteraria, cercando di inserire effettivamente la figura di Giovanni Cottunio all’interno del contesto storico padovano, analizzando ad esempio la sua presenza nel carteggio galileiano e commentando per la prima volta il suo diario o “Foglio di mano” presente nell’Archivio per la Storia dell’Università di Padova. Dal punto di vista letterario, ho cercato infine di analizzare alcune raccolte poetiche in onore di Giovanni Cottunio o da lui stesso curate. Tali raccolte sono tutte inedite o parzialmente inedite e permettono, forse per la prima volta con una certa sistematicità, di rilevare il grado di apprezzamento di Cottunio come benefattore dei greci, come docente universitario patavino e come collaboratore attivo alla causa della “Grecia” occupata.

Autoři zpřítomňují širší dobový kontext této výjimečné události. Upozorňují na to, že i navzdory skutečnosti, že univerzity neumožňovaly řádné studium ženám, se Eleně Cornarové získat doktorát podařilo, a to díky souběhu několika okolností, které vytvořily příznivé podmínky pro jeho udělení. Z nich autoři vyzdvihují zejména tradici intelektuálních center na renesančních dvorech na území dnešní Itálie, vedených vzdělanými aristokratkami; rozvoj Benátské republiky v 16. a 17. století, který ovlivnil i postavení žen, zejména z aristokratických rodin; otevřený přístup univerzit, zejména Univerzity v Padově a v Bologni, ke studiu žen. Hlavní pozornost je věnována rodinnému prostředí, životním osudům a studiu Eleny Cornarové. Na závěr jsou zmíněny další filozofky a vědkyně 17. a 18. století. Exquisitely researched, and intended primarily for the aca- demic community, it successfully finds ways to communicate its content to the broader public interested in early modern learning. Although Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia was the subject of previous scholarly research, this was the first extensive study in Italian—here translated into English—that focuses exclusively on her life. This volume has the merit of unearthing a number of unpublished documents on Elena and of giving an overview of the seventeenth- century Venetian social, cultural, and educational milieu.

    Abstract of the Thesis The Early Women’s Emancipation Movement: Formation of a New Female Identity in the Russian and Late-Victorian Novel by Elena V. Shabliy Thesis Director: Professor Raymond C. Taras Women's emancipation altered the course of Victorian and Russian literature by challenging the literary conventions that governed the portrayal of women and women's experience at the fin de siècle. Emancipationist writing either explicitly advocated social change or embodied a feminist impulse in their treatment of particular themes and questions. The second half of the nineteenth century was marked by the emergence of the women’s movement; this focused primarily on women’s social and moral emancipation. In the 1830s and 1850s, in the German Federation of States, Denmark, England, France, Poland, Russia, and Spain women began to mobilize under the influence of emancipationist novels, discussing the role of women and shifting gender relations. This dissertation The Early Women’s Emancipation Movement: The Formation of a New Female Identity in the Russian and Late-Victorian Novel is comprised of two parts. The first part focuses on the women’s liberation movement in Russia and literary responses to the social change. The second part is dedicated to the women’s movement in Victorian England and its feminist literary discourse. Yet a marked difference exists between the late seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries on the one hand and the nineteenth century on the other. During the late seven- teenth and eighteenth centuries, quite a remarkable number of women throughout Central Europe participated in science. In the ‹rst half of the nineteenth century, however, the diversity and intensity of female involvement with science suffered a considerable decline in the Ger- man states.1 Conversely, the ‹rst half of the nineteenth century brought to German science what has been called the “great transition” from poor dispersed scholars to a vigorous university system with a strong research ethos and a scienti‹c level soon considered the best in Europe.2 It is therefore tempting to examine if and how these two developments are connected to one another and to the greater sociopo- litical changes of that period of transition. Indeed, I will show that in some instances, a direct causal relationship exists between the two; in other respects both processes are deeply informed by the overarching changes connected with the emergence of the bürgerliche Gesellschaft between approximately 1780 and 1850.

One of the leading philosophers of her time, she was murdered by those who opposed free thinking and scientific investigation— APPROX 370 415 CE particularly by a woman. 17TH CENTURY Elena Cornaro Piscopia o The first woman to earn a doctoral degree in mathematics. Scientists and royals from all over Europe traveled to Venice to meet her. She was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Padua where she served until the end of her life. It wasn't until the late twentieth century that another woman earned a 16461684 doctorate from the University of Padua. Maria Agnesi o Maria wrote first mathematics book by a woman that still survives. The eldest of 21 children, this Italian woman wrote a mathematics textbook to teach her younger brothers math; in 1748 it was published as a book entitled Instituzioni Analitiche. She was the first woman appointed as a full mathematics 18TH 17181799 professor at the University of Bologna. CENTURY Sophie Germain o Barred from attending university because of her sex, this French woman went on to great success. She studied math using lecture notes and eventually gained a foothold with a professor who became her mentor. Her mathematical proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem was used 17761831 as a foundation for work on the subject well into the twentieth century. Ada Lovelace o Considered the first computer programmer, she was a gifted mathematician at an early age.

Eighteenth-century Neapolitan intellectuals recognized her passion for learning and her poetic talent and welcomed her into their salons and academies at a very early age. Even the Bourbon monarchs of the Kingdom of Naples were impressed by her skill and appointed her as court librarian. Pimentel was able to infiltrate the masculine world of learning due the unique circumstances of the Italian Enlightenment, which was more open to permitting exceptional women an advanced education, and it allowed them to pursue their studies further than any other women of the eighteenth century outside of the Italian peninsula.
