Cornwall Music Education Hub Update Spring Term 2019 Cornwall Music Education Hub Update Welcome to the Spring 2019 Newsletter! The Autumn term was a busy time for us at the Cornwall Music Education Hub with our annual Autumn Conference, held this year at the Royal Cornwall Showground, plus our GCSE Concerts at the Redruth Regal and Launceston Town Hall. We hope you enjoy the photos and update of our recent projects and we look forward to seeing you at some of our forthcoming events! About the Cornwall Music Education Hub The Cornwall Music Education Hub, a partnership of organisations led by Cornwall Council, is funded by the Department for Education, through Arts Council England, to support schools across Cornwall with their music education. The Cornwall Music Education Hub does not deliver instrumental tuition but helps children and young people to engage with inspiring musical learning through a variety of ways such as projects, workshops, events, ensembles and choirs, training for school staff, funding for whole class instrumental teaching, subsidies for lessons and a large stock of instruments available to hire. For information about how the Hub can support you, visit our website: www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org or email [email protected] Music Curriculum and Ofsted Update In October 2018, Ofsted announced a new inspection framework to come into effect from September 2019. This framework will bring an increased focus on the curriculum and less emphasis on exam results and grades. Ofsted Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, said about the changes in an interview to BBC Breakfast, "What matters here is that results are achieved in the right way. That children are being taught a really good curriculum, and taught it really well. Where schools have the confidence to do that - good results will flow”..."At the moment, there's a relatively small focus on curriculum, and we don't see some of the subjects that are getting lost." The Ofsted presentation given at the recent Music Mark conference can be found on the Music Mark website - https://www.musicmark.org.uk/marketplace/conference- presentations/ National bodies such as Music Mark are suggesting that a shift in focus to a more ‘broad, rich and deep’ curriculum will be good news for subjects such as Music, which recent research suggests is being squeezed out of the curriculum in some schools. It also comes ahead of a new model music curriculum for 5-14 year olds, currently being developed by a panel of experts including Julian Lloyd Webber, which will be launched in Summer 2019. • Richard Lander School Admissions Policy
Richard Lander School Admissions Policy Richard Lander School follows the Local Authority Admissions Policy and, along with all other LA schools in Cornwall, places on transfer from primary school are allocated by the County team who follow the agreed Common Admissions Policy. The policy complies with the School Admissions Code 2014, the School Admission Regulations 2008, the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, the Education Act 1996 and CornwaII Council’s Fair Access Protocol and offers admission to students irrespective of social, racial or religious considerations. The Governing Body, however, reserves the right to consider each applicant individually. This applies particularly to any student who has been permanently excluded from another school, both within this Local Authority and within any other. Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs that names Richard Lander School will be admitted to the School, regardless of the number on roll in the year group. The school will participate fully in the Cornwall Local Authority’s Fair Access Protocol (See Appendix 1). Children in Care who are directed to the school by the Local Authority will be admitted to the school, regardless of the number on roll in the year group. Our ‘published admission number’ is 270 students in years 7-11. These figures relate to the 2015–16 academic year. It is essential that parents realise that there is always a high demand for places at Richard Lander, consequently once the school year has commenced, the preference for specific subjects in Years 10 and 11 cannot always be met. All applications for school places at Richard Lander School must be made to Cornwall Local Authority.

Dear Friends, We rightly celebrate birthdays and may focus on special ones – 0’s or 5’s. It’s surely right to celebrate the birth-day and birthday of the Christian Church – Pentecost (this year, June 9th). On that day the disciples, who obediently waited in the city as Jesus told them, were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to share the good news of Jesus with the assembled crowd. The day is described by Luke in Acts Chapter 2 which indicates that 3,000 people came to faith and the Church began (Acts 2: v37-38).
