About the Cornwall Music Education Hub

The Cornwall Music Education Hub, a partnership of organisations led by , is funded by the Department for Education, through Arts Council , to support schools across Cornwall with their music education. The Cornwall Music Education Hub does not deliver instrumental tuition but helps children and young people to engage with inspiring musical learning through a variety of ways such as projects, workshops, events, ensembles and choirs, training for school staff, funding for whole class instrumental teaching, subsidies for lessons and a large stock of instruments available to hire. For information about how the Hub can support you, visit our website: www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org or email [email protected]

Music Curriculum and Ofsted Update

In October 2018, Ofsted announced a new inspection framework to come into effect from September 2019. This framework will bring an increased focus on the curriculum and less emphasis on exam results and grades. Ofsted Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, said about the changes in an interview to BBC Breakfast, "What matters here is that results are achieved in the right way. That children are being taught a really good curriculum, and taught it really well. Where schools have the confidence to do that - good results will flow”..."At the moment, there's a relatively small focus on curriculum, and we don't see some of the subjects that are getting lost." The Ofsted presentation given at the recent Music Mark conference can be found on the Music Mark website - https://www.musicmark.org.uk/marketplace/conference- presentations/ National bodies such as Music Mark are suggesting that a shift in focus to a more ‘broad, rich and deep’ curriculum will be good news for subjects such as Music, which recent research suggests is being squeezed out of the curriculum in some schools. It also comes ahead of a new model music curriculum for 5-14 year olds, currently being developed by a panel of experts including Julian Lloyd Webber, which will be launched in Summer 2019.

6 Support for Schools

First Access - Funding to introduce your students to learning an instrument

The Hub is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons. The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students (and their teacher!) in Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument. The programme consists of:  An initial planning meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader  10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week)  A review meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class). Schools will need to identify a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also source their own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per set per term. Further information about the programme and how to access the funding can be found on www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/first-access or please contact the Hub office - [email protected]

School Engagement Team Georgina Bridle - North Cornwall Primary schools in North Cornwall recently completed a project to mark the Centenary of the end of the First World War. The children used well known war poems to create songs using the auto chord feature on electronic keyboards. They really enjoyed exploring the other functions of the keyboards to create a verse and chorus section for their song using by choosing appropriate rhythm tracks. They responded to the poems in order to write their own choruses. The project culminated in a visit to Launceston College, where they had the opportunity to create atmospheric war music and take part in a Song Writing Master Class led by local Singer Songwriter, Reg Meuross. They also met the History specialist and learned more about the war. This project was greatly enjoyed by all the children, and some of the schools used songs that they learned in their own memorial services.

Primary Engagement Work Mid/West Cornwall and East Cornwall

It’s been another busy term for CMST’s Christine Judge, Primary Engagement Lead for Mid and West Cornwall. Feeder primary schools to Richard Lander enjoyed school visits from Christine to work on a selection of songs in preparation for a massed sing in harmony as part of their world music experience day at . Over 100 Year 5 pupils from several schools took part in a variety of workshop sessions which included African Drumming, Steel Pans, Gamelan and Recorders. The workshops were run by teachers at Richard Lander school and CMST teachers Christine Judge, Anna Minear and Sarah Whomersly. A great time was had by all at this now annual event. Thank you to all who made this project a success.

Christine brought a group of West Cornwall primary school choirs together to perform at New County Hall as part of the Annual World Peace Day events. The children sang a varied repertoire of peace themed songs to the employees at County Hall as well as parents and friends. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who made this possible and of course to the children who sang beautifully and brightened up everyone’s day!

Falmouth Primary Schools Marlborough, Constantine and St Mary’s RC have had a fun time composing music linked to their class topics this half term working at school with Christine and a student from Falmouth University. The children created original work and enjoyed playing their ideas on classroom percussion instruments as well as singing. Christine hopes to revisit these schools for more composing in the New Year.

Phil Montgomery-Smith and Anna Minear have been working with schools in the St Austell and Liskeard areas during the Autumn Term. During the Spring Term, Anna will be working with schools in the Bodmin area on a project in conjunction with Cornwall’s Regimental Museum which will culminate in a performance in the Summer term. Support for Schools Schools Shine in a WW1 Commemoration Performance

On 29th November, crowds filled the Atrium at Wheal Martyn, all gathering to share the wonderful work of 150 school children from the local Clay Country. The Atrium was filled with the sounds of music, singing and poetry, passionately performed and beautifully crafted. They were songs of War and the clay pits, telling the stories ofclay horses becoming War Horses, tales of clay workers deployed to fight in The Great War and the role women took on in the pits in the absence of the men. The evening was a culmination of two months of work with three local schools, Roche School Year 5 class, Fowey Primary School Year 6 and St Columb Minor Academy Year 4 classes. Each class came to Wheal Martyn on a creative writing research day, exploring the site, the museum artefacts and hearing stories from some of our Clay Country characters from the time of WW1. The Story Republic brought two notable characters to life through vignettes performed around the clay works. They were the stories of William Gould (Gunner Gould) and Hettie Julian. William Gould left the clay works to fight. He served with the 28th Division, 18th Battery Royal Field Artillery, with his horse “Punch”. He was a driver of two horses in a troop of six, which pulled an 18 pounder field gun and limber. Hettie Julian was the daughter of Captain Jack Julian (known as Captain Guts) of Bluebarrow clay works. During WW1 she mainly worked on the monitors but, as her father was in his mid-sixties, if there was a problem at the pit during the night, she would go instead of him to sort it out, using a lantern to light her way. Cordelia from St Columb Minor School added “Wheal Martyn gave the children a real life context for their stories. They could imagine what life would be like in the pit and it stemmed their curiosity and imaginations” – what a fantastic and engaging way for the children to learn about their local history and the impact of WW1. Following the museum visit, the young people produced their own stories and poems with support and advice from Becca Gregson, a professional writer with KEAP (Kernow Education Arts Partnership). The creative writing produced by the class was then remastered into one class song under the careful guidance and musical skills of Emma Mansfield and Roger Luxton from CMEH (Cornwall Music Education Hub). Amanda Harris from KEAP spoke passionately about the reasons behind the project. “The aim of our WW1 Commemoration Project has been to support literacy and creative writing through the arts. The arts offer such a valuable way in for children to learn and develop, to gain essential skills in creativity, writing and self-confidence. The schools here should be congratulated for investing in their young people and engaging with the arts.” Following the stunning performance, Gemma Martin (Education Officer at Wheal Martyn) commented “What a splendid job the children have done! They should all be proud of their achievements. We have been treated to such wonderful creative writing; stories that are competent, tender and imaginative in their reflections of The Great War. Standing and performing to an audience is a daunting task, and all the children have done a great job”. The WW1 Commemoration project was a partnership between Wheal Martyn, KEAP and CMEH. This partnership has built over four years, delivering schools programmes that use the local heritage at Wheal Martyn as a spring board to improve literacy skills in schools through engaging arts project. This project was supported by generous funding from CMEH, Arts Council England and the Cornwall Museums Partnership and local Roche Councillor John Wood (Cornwall Council). School Projects Penryn Partnership Project On Wednesday 7th November a special event took place together for the Penryn Primary Partnership. 8 primary schools which make up the partnership along, with , performed ‘Archie Dobson’s War’, a to commemorate the end of World War 1, students performed to two full houses. Schools included; Penryn Primary, Perran-ar-worthal, Mabe , Con- stantine, Mylor, Smith, Kennal Vale and Flushing. 200 students took part in the project overall: a mass choir of singers from all schools, CAPA Dance group and CAPA drama group. CAPA (Creative Arts Primary Academy) in its 4th year of delivery allows primary students to attend weekly workshops at Penryn College after school. The event was also supported by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust following a successful application for 10 ‘silhouettes’. Each school had their own silhouette to which they added the names of those from their local communities who had served in the war. These silhouettes then formed part of their own events back in their home schools. Feedback from those involved … Great to work with others schools, doing something ‘special’, great to enrich curriculum, students have loved working with others and the excitement of taking part in performing, being part of a team.

Rainbow Pond Music for Early Years Sian Pilley, from ‘The Music Pond,’ and Creator and Author of Rainbow Pond Music, the Hub’s Early Year Music Scheme, has been having fun inspiring Early Years Practitioners that there is amazing musicality already happening in their settings! The Cornwall Music Education Hub supported a recent research project Embedding Rainbow Pond Music in EYFS practice, which delivers adult led music sessions whilst leaving a legacy to deliver meaningful music sessions following on from the project. Sian enjoyed demonstrating and sharing the colourful world and musical support Rainbow Pond Music can offer to non-music specialists. The scheme develops confidence enabling staff to deliver music themselves as they learn alongside the children, it also fosters in participants an awareness and ability to notice and support children’s innate musicality, embedding an authentic understanding of the elements of music and how it supports all areas of child development. “Children focussed well, concentration increased over the weeks …. It has been lovely to have someone come into the class and deliver music in a very different way to me… New ideas to use in my music lessons. Will do more with musical patterns and following the beat.” Nursery Teacher/Manager Hayle The real stars that facilitated the best learning examples were of course the children. Using film and written observations of the children’s play during ‘A Chance To Play’ (free play activities from Rainbow Pond Music,) alongside, the brand new Music Development Matters (link below) written by Nicola Burke, Sian supported staff to apply best fit statements from the document to notice and record music specific development and learning. During the 12 weeks Staff noticed that key children, identified with a variety of needs were demonstrating key next steps in their learning supported directly by Rainbow Pond Music. “Several Children with specific SEND needs have benefited hugely – growing in confidence as well as developing their language skills” EYFS Teacher School (1) In particular, children with speech and language delay, confidence barriers and attention deficit were found to be more engaged, contributed ideas and participated purposefully. “Each week the children have continued to impress me with their focus and concentration.” EYFS Teacher Porthleven (2) Children were noticed, practicing vocal, listening and language skills to the group and amongst peers and have transferred the music learning to other areas, during their free play, such as mathe- matics. Sian is looking forward to the final research project this term and will be sharing activities and findings during training in February at Trethorne Leisure Park Nr Launceston – further details and booking through the Cornwall Council Directory EYFS25. If you’d like to know more about the work Sian is doing across Cornwall, you can follow the Facebook Page, The Music Pond, or contact CMEH to arrange a visit or obtain contact details. After such a fantastic rehearsal and concert in June it was time to develop the Recorders Rule group. For those of you that didn’t take part in the last event – just over 80 recorder players from Year 3 to University level gathered for an afternoon rehearsal at and then gave a performance of fantastic recorder music played all together. It was a really special event and unique in Cornwall! December saw our first rehearsal as an ensemble that will meet regularly to learn new music and work towards performances. 35 students from various schools attended with 15 more not being able to make it this time. This amazing number of enthusiastic recorder players worked on 3 different pieces, working together as a large group and in sections. A lot of fun was had by all!

Please tell any recorder players you know - who have been playing for about a year – about this group. It’s free to join in the fun!

Music for Youth returns to Truro

Once again the Cornwall Music Education Hub are working with Tim Boulton of MusicAbility and Music for Youth to offer a regional music festival in Truro for young musicians of any genre to perform and gain feedback from Music for Youth mentors. On Friday 8th March, choirs and ensembles from around the county will be performing at the Truro Methodist Chapel throughout the day and evening. On Saturday 9th March bands from across Cornwall will be coming together at the Old Bakery Studios in Truro to perform. Some of the performing groups will be invited to perform at the MFY National Festival in Birmingham and the MFY School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Information about the festivals can be found on the Music For Youth website - www.mfy.org.uk

Support for Bands In partnership with Cornwall Music Education Hub, dBs Music Cornwall have been running Youth Music Sessions (YMS) for over 2 years. The YMS sessions, which take place at dBs Music Cornwall, based on site at Cornwall College Camborne, allow 11-19 year olds 3 hours per week (during term time) to explore, develop and expand their music skills through a supportive mentoring scheme. So far, the programme has supported multiple soloists and bands in songwriting, performance skills and recording opportunities. Last year, the Youth Music Sessions expanded with the addition of DJ Youth Sessions. These sessions have allowed young aspiring DJs to get together and share their skills, whilst receiving specialist mentoring. Over the last academic year, we are proud to say that we have seen a significant increase in the standard of work that the attendees to our Youth Music and DJ Sessions are producing. The buzz at dBs Music Cornwall on Thursday evenings is inspiring, not only to other attendees and newcomers but also to the mentoring team. A number of attendees have already signed up and interviewed to study at dBs Music Cornwall in September 2019 and we hope that this will continue to happen, as we strongly believe that our local talent needs to be given the support in developing their music and getting it out for the world to hear. If you or someone you know is interested in attending the Youth Music and/or DJ sessions. Get down to dBs Music Cornwall on Thursdays (during term time) between 5pm - 8pm.
