ven though medicine has become more technical, I believe that caring E for the patient in a personal manner is important- My 30 years experience has proven that philosophy to be true. I’m not a left hand guy, or a right knee guy, but an Orthopaedic Surgeon for the whole person. I do arthroscopic knee and shoulder reconstructions. I replace knee, hip, shoulder and finger joints. I use state of the art surgical techniques, high-tech diagnostics, and the best possible surgical solutions. In my practice here since 1982, I have replaced 3500 knee joints. I believe that technology should not replace the traditional caring connection between the physician and the patient. My calling is to analyze the problem, fix it if possible, and get the person on with their life- at work, play and at home... to make their life as good as possible. I’m complimented when a patient from the past brings me his or her son or daughter and says, “You helped me, please help my child.” It doesn’t get any better than that!

French women spend more money on lingerie than women in any other European country. Anyone who has ever traveled to France probably got a sense of just how important these garments are—next door to the butcher shop and the boulangerie in even the smallest of towns, there is often a cute boutique specializing in classic, elegant lingerie. It’s as essential to a French woman as her daily bread.

3 jDRESS THE PART

French women appreciate the extent to which pleasurable surroundings enhance the quality of life. More important, they understand—in a way that we sometimes forget—that each person contributes to what makes any scene delightful. Whether at work, at a party or simply on the street, dressing well is an act of civic generosity; doing so says, “I care enough about our shared world to do my part in making it beautiful.” So dress up, for heaven’s sake, and leave the sweats in the gym bag. This doesn’t mean, however, that you have to spend inordinate amounts on couture. Indeed, though the French women I used to work with in a French bank in New York City wore exquisite clothes, they went for quality over quantity. I would often see the same perfectly tailored suit on a colleague twice in the same week. Believe me, most anyone who cast an eye on her didn’t think, “OMG, she wore that on Monday!” But rather, “OMG, she looks fabulous. Again.”

Sometimes, we Americans— especially foodies—make too much of a fuss over having friends over for dinner. We feel we have to knock ourselves out for every bite that comes to the table. French women do no such thing. In fact, for many meals I’ve sat down to in French homes, the host has proudly brought her own specialty or two to the table but rounded out the menu with the best prepared foods her city had to offer. In Des Moines, that might include starting with a platter of La Quercia prosciutto; varied and colorful olives, hummus and great bread, all available at Gateway Market; and following the main course with fine cheeses from Gateway and the Cheese Shop of Des Moines (at press time, the Cheese Shop was scheduled to open sometime this fall). And dessert, of course. In France, guests never feel slighted when offered a store-bought dessert from the town’s best patisserie; rather, they feel quite fêted. Your friends will, too, when you offer them a cheesecake from Flarah’s or a tart from Sweet Binney’s.

DSM THE WOMEN’S BOOK 2011 63 5 jDRINK EUROPEAN WINES WITH DINNER

More than once, I’ve heard a French woman claim that she doesn’t drink, but when she sat down to the table, she said “oui” to a glass of wine. Asking my French friend Martine about this, she laughed and said, “To us, wine is food.” Wine and food are natural companions. But if you find yourself feeling a bit loopy and overindulged after more than one glass—and have felt even more unfortunate effects the next day—you might consider switching to European wines. Most American table wines contain at least 13.5 percent alcohol, and climb up from there, often to 14.5 percent. Conversely, it’s easy to find a European wine that stays at 11 to 12.5 percent. This makes a difference, especially for women, who have a lower tolerance for alcohol than men. Better yet, lower-alcohol wines can help keep the night’s joie de vivre humming along. In my experience, the pleasant lift you get from wine sustains itself longer when you’re not pouring a high-proof
