Outlook Change is in the air for Central College football, but under new head coach Jeff McMartin, much is familiar about one of the nation's winningest programs. The influence of McMartin's mentor, Central's college football hall of famer Ron Schipper, is clear. He may not wear out the Kuyper Field sideline grass quite as quickly as Schipper did with his frantic pacing during 36 years worth of fall Saturdays, but the trademark drive and fierce determination to succeed are present in equal measure inside the young coach, just as they were in Schipper's worthy successor, Rich Kacmarynski. Kac posted a glossy 62-15 mark in a seven- year run that just concluded. McMartin's hiring marked only Central's third head coaching change since 1939. In returning to his alma mater for what he terms his dream job, McMartin sees much he likes. Certainly, last year's 5-5 record was a jolt to red-clad Dutch Nation, but Central still hasn't had a losing season since the Eisenhower Administration. McMartin vows that won't change. The 25 Iowa Conference championships, the NCAA record 16 playoff appearances, and the 278-47-2 record since 1961? Definitely something to build on. And as McMartin describes his approach to the game, one hears echoes of the Schipper gospel. "The thing I stress is that whatever style we play, we're going to take care of the ball," McMartin said. "We want to play really sound, smart football, and avoid penalties and turnovers. That's a big thing with me. And we want to be great on special teams." Yet McMartin shows no hesitancy in quickly putting his own stamp on the program. "I want to be an attacking, hard-hitting team," he said. "I want our offense to be a reflection of our defense. I want to find ways to be aggressive." Central's trademark running game won't be abandoned, but McMartin will seize every opportunity to put pressure on the opponent, by air or land. Call it the Midwest Coast offense. "Coach Schipper used to say that players win football games, not plays," McMartin said. "I agree with that. We just want to make it difficult for people to play us. "My goal is to compete at all times, that we play hard, that we play up to our capabilities and that we have fun. If we do those things, we're going to be successful." Fueling McMartin's optimism is the return of 13 starters, including plenty of talent at the skill positions and an all- American in waiting at linebacker in senior Mark Sanger. The transition to a new system has also been eased by the team's trip to Germany following graduation last spring, which allowed for some practice work.

Quarterback Mark Isaacson is looking for big things in his senior year as the returning starting signal caller. The 2003 campaign wasn't always a smooth ride, but the 6-6, 210-pounder had a productive season, completing 104 of 240 passes for 1,278 yards with six interceptions and eight touchdowns. "That's our guy," McMartin said. "He's played and had a chance to show what he can do. We hope he can take on a new offensive system and run with it. He worked really hard in the off season. His conditioning is right where it needs to be." The top backup could be a tight end--6-1, 210-pound senior Derek Livingston. He moved to tight end a year ago

because he was deemed too valuable to be spending time on the bench. That's still true, but he's also the most experi- enced option at quarterback should Isaccson go down. However, McMartin thinks the Dutch have some promising prospects in the freshman class who will be brought up to speed quickly.

Running back In Central's new scheme, the Dutch won't always be aligned in the familiar I-formation. The fullback has transitioned into an S-back who could line up in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage. "It needs to be a pretty versatile athlete," McMartin said. "You have to be able to block, catch and occasionally run with it." Last year's starting fullback, 6-5, 235-pound senior Durk Pearston, appears well-suited for the task. He was Central's third-leading rusher last year with 209 yards on 59 carries with four scores and caught three passes for nine yards. Other candidates include converted linebackers Brent Schumacher, a 6-1, 190-pound junior, and Kyle Whisner, a 6- foot, 200-pound senior, along with D.J. Henle, a 5-11, 215-pound sophomore. "Without a doubt, Durk (Pearston) has a leg up," McMartin said. "We expect big things. But they all played the position in Germany and picked it up pretty well." The Dutch are loaded at tailback. Last year's top two rushers are back--the talented tandem of senior Tyler Baethke (6-0, 175) and sophomore sibling Dustyn Baethke (6-1, 195). Tyler rushed for 757 yards on 179 carries with four scores, averaging 4.2 yards an attempt. Dustyn was sidelined by injury initially, but gained 341 yards on 64 carries in the final six games, averaging 5.3 yards a carry and three touchdowns. In a win at Upper Iowa, Dustyn had 135 yards on 19 carries and Tyler had 100 yards on 17 attempts. Joining the crowd is sophomore transfer Vance Schuring (5-11, 200), a former Pella all-stater who should make a quick impression. The addition of Schuring led some Dutch faithful to wonder if one of the backs should be moved to beef up the receiving corps. Fans need not worry. "We want to get the best guys on the field," McMartin said. "We may run two of them as split backs, we may line one up as a receiver or we may shift them. It's great to have depth at that position because we ask a lot of them. All three are very capable. "The nice thing about all of them is that all three are smart guys. They all catch the ball and they're all dangerous in the open field. The big thing is to get them the ball in open space. I'm concerned about touches, not whether it's a pass or a run."

Receivers Trent Cooper, a 6-3, 185-pound senior, is the top returnee with 26 catches for 378 yards and two scores last season. McMartin calls Cooper the leader, but also likes what's he's seen from Brad Ryals, a 6-4, 200-pound sophomore. "Brad Ryals could really be a force for us," McMartin said. "He made some great catches in the spring." McMartin calls sophomore Billy Fox (5-10, 165) a "gritty" player. "He was on the scout team last year, but I like his tenacity," he said. He also can call on junior Kyle Seuferer (6-1, 185), who had a good spring as well, and junior Stephen Barnes (6-1, 185). Barnes is a likely candidate for punt return duties and could also be utilized at quarterback.

Tight end Livingston learned the tight end position quickly enough to catch 17 balls for 276 yards and a touchdown, averaging a team-high 16.2 yards a reception. "He's a playmaker," McMartin said. "Derek could have a big year. We're going to get him the ball." The Dutch will run some double-tight end formations and senior Aaron Bonnema (6-3, 210) can fill the second spot. McMartin said one of the S-backs could be utilized there as well.

Offensive line One of the keys to the season will be the rebuilt offensive line. Providing a good foundation is senior center Ike Hammerly (6-1, 290), a three-year letterwinner and co-captain. "Ike's lost some weight but added strength," McMartin said. "He runs and moves really well. We'll build our offensive line around him and our team as well." Also back is Ryan Johnson, a 6-3, 270-pound junior tackle. "Ryan may be our most gifted lineman," McMartin said. "He looked good in the spring."

Football 39

Battling back from injury and adding strength is Nick Reed, a 5-10, 230-pound sophomore. Classmate Jon Robeson (6-1, 280) and seniors Derek Haugen (6-1, 230) and Curt Van Zee (6-3, 250) are top guard candidates while seniors Steve Odendahl (6-4, 240) and Jimmy Oltmann (6-6, 298) are top contenders at tackle. "We lost some good people but this group did a good job in the spring," McMartin said. "It will take a while for them to come together and gel. But it seems like a very athletic group and I also think they're pretty aggressive. We have to take advantage of that."

Defensive line Rodney Sundine (6-1, 245) returns at nose guard but the other two starters in the line were lost to graduation. He made 52 tackles, including 19 solos, and was second on the team in sacks with five for 31 yards. "He's the guy we'll build our line around," McMartin said. "He's probably one of our strongest athletes." Top contenders for the other spots include juniors Quentin Huisman (6-3, 240), who made 13 tackles last year with two sacks and three tackles for loss, Matt Cook (5-11, 280), Dallas Wessels (6-1, 225) and Collin Willhite (6-3, 205); and sophomores Ricky De Hamer (6-3, 235) and Taylor Vanden Wynboom (6-foot, 225). Huisman is the only player in the group that has seen much varsity action, however.

Linebacker The Dutch have more veterans at linebacker, none more experienced than linebacker Mark Sanger (6-foot, 215), entering his fourth year as a starter. A Football Gazette pre-season all-America selection and a two-time first-team all-con- ference pick, Sanger led the Dutch with 106 tackles last season, including 46 solos, five tackles for loss and five sacks, along with two interceptions, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles. "Mark's got a great motor and is a very hard worker," McMartin said. "He's everything you want in a football player. He's got a tremendous attitude and is the complete package." This is the 15th time in the past 16 years that the Dutch have had a Sanger on the roster. Mark is the youngest of four brothers to play at Central. Kevin, a 1993 graduate, was an all-conference defensive end. Rick, a 1996 grad, and Jeff, a 2001 alum, were both all-America picks at linebacker. Kevin is in his 10th season as a Central assistant, coaching the defensive line, while Jeff is in his second year, working with the stinger position. Another veteran, senior Kevin Bonstetter (6-1, 200), is back at left-side linebacker. He tied for third on the tackle charts with 65, including 22 solos with five tackles for loss and two sacks, along with two pass breakups. "Kevin's a tough kid and a good football player," McMartin said. "We've got to have a great year from Kevin." Battling for time at the other linebacker position are sophomore Colby Myers (6-2, 200) and juniors Tom O'Donnell (5-10, 205), Scott Mathes (6-1, 190) and Jeremy Greiner (6-0, 225).

Stinger Both starters return at the stinger position. Seniors Matt Matthes (6-4, 200) and Kyle Paris (6-0, 190) are coming off productive seasons. Matthes had 55 tackles with 20 unassisted stops, five tackles for loss, two sacks and two pass breakups. Paris had 47 tackles with 20 solos, four tackles for loss and three sacks with an interception and five pass breakups. Matthes made a quick impression on McMartin. "He was probably one of the best defensive players on the field in spring practice," he said. Another contender is senior Reggie Osborn (6-0, 205), who had 10 tackles last season, including seven solos.

Defensive backs Senior free safety Nick Cross (6-1, 200) had a strong stretch run last year and has emerged as the leader in the sec- ondary. He was Central's second-leading tackler with 85, including 40 solos with a tackle for loss, three interceptions and a team-high eight pass breakups. "Nick's a really good free safety," McMartin said. "He's a hard-nosed football player and a guy we have a lot of confi- dence will make plays." Other promising free safety hopefuls include sophomore Ben Bollard (6-1, 175) and junior David Calease (6-0, 180). "Ben (Bollard) is coming off a good track season," McMartin said. "He's got good speed and is really smart." Returning starting cornerback Jeff T. Jones (5-10, 185), a senior, made 36 stops last year, including 23 solos with six pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. "Jeff's very team-oriented," McMartin said. "He's got the potential to have a very good season." Seeking to claim the other cornerback spot are junior Nate Rasmussen (6-0, 175) and sophomore transfer Brett Doud

40 Football

(5-10, 180) of Oskaloosa. Rasmussen will get the first look, provided he can avoid the injury bug that's hounded him. Doud transferred follow- ing a redshirt year at Iowa State and shows tremendous promise, McMartin said.

Special teams Senior Keith Wasoba (6-1, 180) is a two-time letterwinner as the team punter. He averaged 37.2 yards on 67 boots last year, with 16 landing inside the 20-yard line. "He looks great," McMartin said. "He's got a great leg. I was impressed with him." Shoring up the placekicking game is a McMartin priority. The jobs are "wide open," he said. Sophomore Brandon O'Neal (5-9, 160) will battle senior Josh J. Anderson (5-10, 180) and possibly Wasoba. But McMartin thinks he may have some contenders in the freshman class as well. "The nice thing is, it's a decision that's not too subjective," McMartin said. "If you can kick it in the end zone every time, you're our guy."

The Iowa Conference Defending champion Wartburg sustained some significant graduation losses but the Knights are loaded with depth and remain the Iowa Conference favorites. McMartin views Simpson as "very dangerous," with Buena Vista, Loras and Coe also making noise. McMartin said he can't spend much time worrying about the competition, however. "I'm concerning myself with us becoming the best team we can be," he said. "You don't necessarily have to have the best individuals to have the best team. You can look throughout the history of sports and see great individuals who played together but didn't necessarily make great teams. "If you have guys that want to work hard and be unselfish, that's when you can become a great team."

The transition The early-season schedule is brutal, with NCAA Div. III playoff hopefuls Augustana (Ill.) and Bethel (Minn.) in non- conference play, followed by league games with Simpson, Loras and Coe, all of whom defeated the Dutch last year. Gearing up for that barrage of contenders while installing a new offensive system will be tough to pull off. "That was one advantage of the practices before our trip to Germany last spring," said McMartin, who will serve as the team's offensive coordinator for his first year. "That helped us get a lot of stuff done. But it is a concern. We need to hit the ground running. My hope is to keep things simple enough so that we execute well, and if we're having trouble, we'll back off even more. "We have a tough schedule, but that's just the way it is," he said. "Great teams play great schedules. There are not a lot of championship teams that play easy schedules. They're usually challenged and we're going to be challenged all year." McMartin has a wealth of coaching experience, but this is the first time he's put on the head coach's whistle. "The nice thing is we have a lot of coaches with experience," McMartin said. "They've been really helpful." Four Central assistants have been with the Dutch for 10 years or longer, headed by receivers coach Dick Bowzer, who is in his 38th season, the second-longest tenure of any Division III assistant. Two other assistants were high school head coaches for more than 25 years before joining the Central staff. "We're here to play championship football year-in and year-out, and we're going to do everything in our power to put our players in position to succeed," McMartin said.
