April moved to Arlington in 1974 when she was just two years old. She was the youngest of six children. Her father Orval managed the Stone Hereford Ranch and her mother Sylvia was the cook at the Arlington school for many years. Tradition runs deep as her parents were Grand Marshals in 1993. Gilliam County Fair was always considered vacation time for April’s family. As a young girl she participated in all livestock events as well as cooking, sewing and public speaking. Of the 40 awards she won during her 9 years of 4-H, her proudest accomplishments were winning the All-Around Grand Champion Showman, Homemaker of the year, the honorary Pete Pattee Award and qualifying for Oregon State Fair and competing in the cooking contests. April began her community service at the young age of 20 as the Swine Barn Superintendent. That same year she was asked by the “Pig Kids” to become their new leader. The Hams Swine Club was born in 1993. She was later joined by Leah Watkins and they were fondly referred to as The Swine Queen and The Pig Princess. These spunky leaders ended up being co-Swine Superintendents. Some of the annual activities included camping trips to Paradise and The Goat Ranch. In May of 1999 her first child, Sylas was born. He joined the 4-H tradition when he was just three months old, in a stroller. He was blessed to have had 26 4-H members as his babysitters! Glory Jean was born in August of 2001. (Glory Jean was named after April’s two 4-H leaders Gloria Davis and Jean Mikkalo). This was the first time April had missed the fair since she was a very young child! By the next year April was back on track with her two kids and Sara Grady in tow. They took their seasoned old trailer and set up camp and soon the Pig Dynasty sign was posted out front. Lots of fun was had and many jokes were cracked during those years. Her kids recall one of the few sayings from their mom that is appropriate to repeat “Come on! Get up! Time to clean stalls! I’ve woken you up 3 times already now get dressed and outside. All the good wheelbarrows will be gone!” As the years progressed, April continued her involvement in 4-H. She was a leader for the Galloping Gourmets Cooking Club, The Hams Swine Club and when her kids were old enough for 4-H she started the Northern Hams Swine Club. Any kid in her club can recall her drilling them with these phrases: “Tuck in your shirt! Spit out your gum! Long sleeves! DO YOU HAVE A LONGSLEEVE? Get in your pens and wait your turn! Don’t let someone one up you! Smile for the judge. Did you comb your hair…nevermind I’ll do it. What’s a hog gestation period?… 3 months, 3 weeks, three days! ” I am pretty sure all those kids will never forget what a hog gestation period is. April truly believes that most life lessons can be learned in 4-H. The value of hard work, time management, public speaking, how to dress for an interview, money management, responsibility, a firm handshake, kindness and compassion for others and how to make a lifetime network of friends. In addition to being a leader she has clerked many events at the fair, narrated modeling, has been an entertainer, organized the style review, seen participating in Adult Showmanship in a fancy hat, volunteered at the ticket booth, donated awards and organized the re-sale hogs at the auction, which she continues to do at the present time. A commitment to her community isn’t just about 4-H for April. In 2017 the town of Arlington was infested by millions of Mormon Crickets. She could be heard saying, “Not in MY town!”. She grabbed a backpack sprayer and went to work spraying crickets before they could lay their eggs. She researched, studied and contacted state, federal and local officials trying to figure out what could be done for future infestations. Along with Jordan Maley at the Oregon State Extension Office and Oregon Department of Ag she has helped organize efforts with landowners and farmers to bring the infestation under control. She was contacted by a production company, interviewed and appeared on the Animal Planet show Intruders. April has also presented at the National Mormon Cricket and Grasshopper Conference in Denver where she has a standing invitation. April is currently employed by Gilliam County as the Victims Assistance Director at the District Attorney’s Office. She has been in this position for 18 years working with all victims of crime. In 2019 she was awarded the Oregon State Victims Advocate of the Year from the Oregon District Attorneys Association. April is quoted as saying “every kid should get the opportunity to be involved in 4-H and being a volunteer and working with kids is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have in life. Don’t let a good thing die. Support your local 4-Hers because they are learning lifelong skills. Some of the best adults I know today were once my pig kids.” 2019 AUCTION POOL CONTRIBUTORS 2019 LIVESTOCK BUYERS Fossil Fuel/Fossil Fill-Up W2 Club Lambs & Shanna Avangrid Renewables Gilliam County Gronquist *Bank of Eastern Oregon Hattenhauer Energy Co, LLC Wayne Bates Bates Ranches Hatt’s Fuel Stop Wheatland Insurance – Condon Bernie & Janet O'Neill Jim & Sandy Greiner Wilde Ranches ****Blue Line Kelly, Shanna, Kellen & Colt Caithness Shepherds Flat, LLC Gronquist BRONZE ($1 - $100) Central Oregon Livestock Les Schwab Tire Center – Agri-Service Auction Heppner Allen & Dawn Lathrop Command Sourcing Mark & Shanny Miller Anderson Perry & Associates Community Counseling Mike Campbell Angela & Gus Jaeger Solutions Murray’s Drug Arlington Hardware *Devin Oil NW Farm Credit Services – B & C Grocery Eastern Oregon Mobile Pendleton Betsy Pattee Slaughter NW Farm Credit Services – The Cassandra Flatt Cruise Planners **Geared Mechanical Dalles Condon Elks Lodge Geer Farms Paradise Rose Cub & Mary Bare Holzaphel Ranches Pete & Nancy McElligott Dallas & Laura Harsin **Jerry Rietmann Snow-McElligott Dana & Stephanie Carter Johnson Hay & Cattle Two Boys Grocery David & Kathryn Greiner Litowich Law, P.C.

  • Pete Aldridge Well, Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, and Welcome to the Fifth and Final Public Hearing of the President’S Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond
The President’s Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy PUBLIC HEARING Asia Society 725 Park Avenue New York, NY Monday, May 3, and Tuesday, May 4, 2004 Pete Aldridge Well, good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the fifth and final public hearing of the President’s Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond. I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that the time period since this Commission was appointed and asked to produce a report has elapsed at the speed of light. At least it seems that way. Since February, we’ve heard testimonies from a broad range of space experts, the Mars rovers have won an expanded audience of space enthusiasts, and a renewed interest in space science has surfaced, calling for a new generation of space educators. In less than a month, we will present our findings to the White House. The Commission is here to explore ways to achieve the President’s vision of going back to the Moon and on to Mars and beyond. We have listened and talked to experts at four previous hearings—in Washington, D.C.; Dayton, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; and San Francisco, California—and talked among ourselves and we realize that this vision produces a focus not just for NASA but a focus that can revitalize US space capability and have a significant impact on our nation’s industrial base, and academia, and the quality of life for all Americans. As you can see from our agenda, we’re talking with those experts from many, many disciplines, including those outside the traditional aerospace arena.

  • Stolen Generation Narratives and the Ethics of Recognition
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The University of Sydney: Sydney eScholarship Journals online DOROTHY GREEN MEMORIAL LECTURE Narrative Lives and Human Rights: Stolen Generation Narratives and the Ethics of Recognition KAY SCHAFFER, UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE Dorothy Green was a formidable figure in the field of Australian literature. I first met her twenty five years ago at a symposium in Sydney hosted by Geoffrey Sharp, the then editor of Arena. The idea for the gathering grew out of the pres- entation of a number of innovative papers that had been delivered to the first ASAL Conference, held at Monash University in 1978 that offered what then were emergent feminist and cultural studies perspectives. At the ASAL confer- ence, and later at the Sharp symposium, I presented a paper on Katharine Susannah Prichard, entitled “Of an End a New Beginning,” that utilized feminist, neo- marxist and psychobiographic tools to analyse the creative tension between Prichard’s biography, her Marxist politics and the marked Lawrentian tendencies in her fiction. Geoff later published it in Arena in 1979 (Iseman). It was my first published piece of critical writing in Australia. A number of (then) young (and now well-known) scholars whose work pio- neered Australian feminist and cultural studies, including film and popular cul- ture, had delivered papers at ASAL and were subsequently invited to the seminar in Sydney. Many of us worked at the intersections of literature, politics, philoso- phy and popular culture and came from interdisciplinary faculties in the CAEs, the Institutes of Technology and newer universities.

  • Red Dwarf” - by Lee Russell
Falling in love with “Red Dwarf” - by Lee Russell It was around 2003 or 2004 when I fell in love with the British sci-fi comedy show “Red Dwarf”. I had been somewhat aware of the series when it launched in 1988 but the external model shots looked so unrealistic that I didn’t bother to try it… what a mistake! My epiphany came late one night after a long session of distance-studying for a degree with the Open University. Feeling very tired and just looking for something to relax with before going to bed, I was suddenly confronted with one of the funniest comedy scenes I had ever seen. That scene was in the Season VIII episode ‘Back in the Red, part 2’. I tuned in just at the moment that Rimmer was using a hammer to test the anaesthetic that he’d applied to his nether regions. I didn’t know the character or the back story that had brought him to that moment, but Chris Barrie’s wonderful acting sucked me in – I was laughing out loud and had suddenly become ‘a Dwarfer’. With one exception, I have loved every series of Red Dwarf, and in this blog I’ll be reflecting on what has made me come to love it so much over the 12 series that have been broadcast to date. For anyone was hasn’t seen Red Dwarf (and if you haven’t, get out there and find a copy now – seriously), the story begins with three of the series’ main characters who have either survived, or are descended from, a radiation accident that occurred three million years ago and killed all of the rest of the crew of the Jupiter Mining Corp ship ‘Red Dwarf’.
