• CTSA PROCEEDINGS 52 (1997): 59-62 • A RESPONSE TO GARY MACY I have the privilege of thanking Professor Macy for all of us, for this most interesting and provocative piece of historical research. We are all indebted to the historian who can put the bread of detail on the empty plate of our general- ized assumptions about the past. Far from being an arcane matter of interest only to specialists, this paper is a fine example of the importance of explorations in the history of doctrine, often into long neglected and forgotten texts. Henri De Lubac, whose work The Mystery of the Supernatural (translated 1967, dedicated to Gerard Smith, S.J., my philosophy teacher at Marquette), was the most earth moving in my own theological education, has written that "theology without his- torical research is only one more symptom of a church out of touch with the world."1 I will comment on three points which Ifind to be major contributions of this paper, and raise a few questions for Sunday morning's discussion. 1. DISCONTINUITY BETWEEN ORDINATION AND EUCHARIST I think it was Edward Schillebeeckx who, in his 1981 book on leadership in the Church {Ministry), established that for the first 1,000 years or so, the presider at the Eucharist was identified as such by way of the authority he (even some- times she, in the earliest communities) carried of real leadership in the commun- ity. The authority of official appointment and jurisdiction was secondary and fol- lowed. Prof. Macy gives us specifics that show dramatically the relatively late connection of ordination with the role of presiding at the Eucharist. -

INTERPOLATED AMEN'S IN THE CANON OF THE MASS ÖERALD ELLARD, S.J., PH.D. St. Mary^s College FJEW things are so venerable, few so carefully guarded, as the canon *• of the Roman Mass. It is indicative of how highly it was regarded from the very earliest period that the oldest Latin Mass-books of Spain, Gaul, and Ireland, different as they are in so many respects, all spontaneously adopted that Roman canon, which Pope Vigilius had described in 538, shortly before Gregory the Great was born, as of apostolic antiquity: "textum . .quern Deo propitio ex apostolica tradi- tione suscepimus."1 True, the canon, as we use it now, is called Gregorian in perpetuation of the memory of the revision, slight and insignificant, that Gregory gave it around 595. For all that, the canon in our Mass-book contains four interpolated amen's—at the conclusion of the prayers Communicantes, Rane igitur, Supplices, and Memento etiam—and narrowly missed permanently acquiring a fifth one, at the end of the Nobis quoque peccatoribus. This article centers attention on those adventitious amen's and seeks to unravel their story somewhat more accurately than I have seen it set out elsewhere. There is need of greater precision in the matter. Thus, Dom Bernard Botte, in his definitive Le canon de la Messe, edition critique, in the excellent apparatus criticus setting out the variant readings of the oldest texts, hinted that these four amen's came in with the edition of the canon printed at Rome in 1474.2 He adduced that particular edition of the Roman Mass-book because it then issued in print for the first time and has been reprinted nowadays for our con sultation. -

FTER the Credo, the catechumens having been dismissed, the root of the service-the repetition of what Our Lord did at the Last Supper-begins. Our Lord took bread and · wine. So bread and wine must first be brought to the cele brant and placed before him on the altar. St. Justin says that "bread and a cup of wine are brought to the president of the brethren." Originally at this point the people brought up bread and wine which were received by the deacon and placed on the credence table. How ever, in the Eastern rites and in the Gallican rite a later practice of preparing the bread and wine before the beginning of the Mass grew up. Rome alone kept the original practice of offering them at this point, when they are about to be consecrated. In the Middle Ages, as the public presentation of the gifts by the people had disappeared, there seemed to be a void. This interval was fi lled up by our present offertory prayers. But even before the disappearance of this public presentation, the choir sang merely to fill up the time while the sil ent action of offering the gifts proceeded. The offertory chant is of great antiquity. Like the Introit and Communion chants, this chant was always an entire psalm in the early ages. By the time of the first Roman Ordo, the psalm was re duced to an antiphon with one or two verses of the psalm. In the Gregorian Antiphonary it is still the same. -

Liturgical books were certainly being used by the middle of the 4th century, and possibly before the end of the third, but the earliest surviving texts date from the seventh century, and musical notation was not used in the west until the ninth century when the melodies of Gregorian chant were codified. The only book known with certainty to have been used until the fourth century was the Bible from which the lessons were read. Psalms and the Lord's Prayer were known by heart, otherwise the prayers were extempore. There was little that could be described as ceremonial in the sense that we use the term today. Things were done as they were done for some practical purpose. The lessons were read in a loud voice from a convenient place where they could be heard, and bread and wine were brought to the altar at the appropriate moment. Everything would evidently have been done with the greatest possible reverence, and gradually and naturally signs of respect emerged, and became established customs, in other words liturgical actions became ritualized. -

THE SARUM USE By the Reverend Canon Professor J. Robert Wright Historiographer of the Episcopal Church he Sarum Use” is the name applied to the particular rendering of divine worship in the English Church that was developed at “T Salisbury, in Wiltshire, from the early thirteenth century and then gradually spread to become at least by the fourteenth century the finest local expression of the Western or Roman Rite in England up to the Reformation. “Sarum” is the abbreviation for Sarisburium, the Latin word for Salisbury, which was and is both a city and a diocese in south central England. The Use of Sarum, then, was a rather exuberant, elaborate, beautiful, and especially well arranged adaptation of the Western or Roman Rite that was gradually adopted by most of the rest of England as well as much of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and even some places on the continent. Indeed, the first Sarum Missal to be printed was at Paris in 1487, then Basle 1489, Rouen 1492, Venice 1494, etc., and not at London until 1498. (The General Theological Seminary has two Sarum Missals, one printed at Paris in 1555 and one at Rouen in 1508). Origins The Norman Conquest (1066) ushered in not only a widespread building and rebuilding of cathedrals and churches on a larger scale and in Romanesque architecture but also continental influences tending towards the centralization of both liturgy and monastic customs. Even earlier this could be seen in the Regularis Concordia of c. 970, and after the Conquest in the Monastic Constitutions of Archbishop Lanfranc. Parallel and subsequent to these developments there seems to have been a need felt for a certain clarity and fixity in liturgical matters at the secular (non-monastic) cathedrals. -
