There are several distinct families bearing the surname. AIULFUS CAMERARIUS (the Latinised form) was a tenant in chief in co. Dorset, and probably the Conqueror's own chamberlain. One of his possessions in that county is still called HAMPRESTON or HANIPRESTON CHAMBERLAINE .
