Hypselobarbus kushavali is diagnosed from its closest congener, H. dobsoni, by having more upper transverse scale rows, more circumferential scale rows and more lateral line to pelvic scale rows, and from H. bicolor and H. jerdoni by having fewer lateral-line and fewer circumpeduncular scale rows. Diagnostic features for H. kushavali are also provided relative to other species of the genus. Keywords: Cyprinidae, Hypselobarbus kushavali, Distribution, Taxonomy. Barbatula Leoparda (Actinopterygii, Nemacheilidae), a New Endemic Species of Stone Loach of French Catalonia
Scientific paper Barbatula leoparda (Actinopterygii, Nemacheilidae), a new endemic species of stone loach of French Catalonia by Camille GAULIARD (1), Agnès DETTAI (2), Henri PERSAT (1, 3), Philippe KEITH (1) & Gaël P.J. DENYS* (1, 4) Abstract. – This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. bar- batula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is char- acterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which are well distinct from all other species, for molecular identifications. This discovery is important for conservation. BARMAN Zoological Survey of India, FPS Building, Kolkata-700 016 INTRODUCTION Andhra Pradesh is one of the eight maritme states of our country lying on the southeastern coast of the Indian Peninsula. Three major mountain ranges are located in the state. The Eastern Ghats which constitute a chain of hill ranges fringing the east coastal line, the Deccan plateau with the Sahyadri range of Adilabad district to the north border and the Horseley & other hills of the Chittoor and Anantapur districts to the south border of this state. Two major rivers of South India. viz., the Godavari and the Krishna River with their several tributaries form the chief perennial river systems of this state. There are a large number of medium and small sized rivers in addition to several Man made reservoirs in this state. Moreover, there are several wetlands including one of the National Wetlands, viz., Kolleru Lake in this state. The state is known to contain 158 species under 68 genera, 27 families and 10 orders of freshwater fishes (Barman, 1993). The freshwater fish fauna of this state has been reviewed in respect of the threatened and endemic freshwater fishes of our country. This has revealed that Andhra Pradesh contains 53 threatened freshwater fishes of India as per Molur & Walker (1998) and Menon (1999 and 2004). Out ofth 53 threatened species, Endangered, Vulnerable, Rare and near threatened species are represented by 15, 27, 5 and .6 species respectively. -

The recorded and reported species along with their distribution in different States of N. E. India, status, type locality and endemicity have been shown in Table 1. Controversy is there regarding total number of species occurring in North East India. Regarding endemic species also differences of opinion persist. Sen (1985) identified 48 species to be endemic to Assam and neighbouring North Eastern States. Sarkar and Ponniah (2000) reported 66 species endemic to this region. Ghosh and Lipton (1982) reported 33 species as restricted in their distribution to this region. School of Industrial Fisheries, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin 682 016, India E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The identification of 175 freshwater fish- es from 41 west flowing and 3 east flowing river systems of Kerala were confirmed. These can be grouped under 106 ornamental and 67 food fish- es. The biodiversity status of these fishes was assessed according to IUCN criteria. The results showed that populations of the majority of fish species showed drastic reduction over the past five decades. Thirty-three fish species were found to be endemic to the rivers of Kerala. The distributions of the species were found to vary within and between the river systems and some of the species exhibited a high degree of habitat specificity. The diversity and abundance of the species generally showed an inverse relationship with altitude. The serious threats faced by the freshwater fishes of Kerala are mostly in the form of human interventions and habitat alter- ations and conservation plans for the protection and preservation of the unique and rare fish bio- diversity of Kerala are also highlighted. 164 Biodiversity status of fishes inhabiting rivers of Kerala (S.India) INTRODUCTION river. ABSTRACT Paracanthocobitis tumitensis sp. nov. is described from a stream Tumit in the northern part of Chandel district of Manipur State, India, which forms a part of the Chindwin basin. The fish is characterised by the absence of axillary pelvic lobe, 11-12.5 pectoral-fin rays, 9 pelvic-fin rays, 7 anal-fin rays, lateral line incomplete, reaching at the middle of predorsal-fin insertion, with 6-8 pores and 28- 33 scales, 2 black spots at upper and lower base margins of caudal-fin, 15-16 greyish dark black blotches along the lateral side of body, 15-17 dorsal saddle like bands which not extending to lateral line, and 5 dark bands on caudal-fin. -

Applied Fisheries and Aquaculture Scope of the Programme The program is designed as a four semester, two year programme under the Credit and Semester System. The programme will cater to the higher study opportunity for under graduate programmes in the related fields, in this university and other universities within the country and abroad. The fishing industry is in need of highly skilled man power and this programme will create the necessary skill sets among the aspiring students. The general skill sets attained will relate to Biology, Capture, Culture and Management of fisheries. The focus areas of this programme are Aquaculture Technology, Fisheries Business Management, Fish Capture Technology and Fish Processing Technology. Semester I covers such aspects as Taxonomy of fishes, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Research Methodology and Biostatistics and Computer Applications. The practical paper includes topics from all the four theory papers. In Semester II, the topics covered are Ecology of Aquatic Ecosystems and Inland Aquaculture, Ornamental Fisheries, Genetics and Biotechnology and Health Management in Aquaculture. Only one practical paper is assigned for this semester covering the experimental aspects of inland aquaculture, ornamental fisheries and health management. In Semester III, three theory courses are offered including Mariculture, Fish Nutrition and Microbiology & Quality Management. Two practical papers are offered in this semester. The first practical is on Aquaculture and Fish Nutrition while the second practical is on Fishery Microbiology and Quality Control. In addition the students have to undergo training in a reputed hatchery to understand the nuances of breeding and rearing of aquarium fishes and food fishes.
