Four years later, links were forged • between the Parisian and Viennese stages via Favart who corresponded with Count Durazzo in Vienna and sent opera scores and suggestions about personnel. In 1765 problems with finance and leadership led to dismissal of Vienna's first French troupe but others performed there for shorter periods between .:1765 and 1780. Opera-comique was introduced to Vienna by French players. Occasional performances of opera-comique in German translation took place in Vienna during the 1770s. When, in 1778, the Nationalsingspiel was founded, French opera formed part of the repertoire because of a lack of good German works. A renewed interest in opèra-comique began in about 1790 when fear of revolutionary France and the reigns of Leopold and Franz led to a return of interest in Italian opera at the court theatres, and the virtual disappearance of opêra-comique from its repertoire. -

Une pièce intéressante, des situations, des caractères, avec cela une musique vraie, dramatique, agréable, de bons chanteurs qui soient en même temps de bons comédiens, c’est ce que dès le principe a exigé le public français. — Que demandons-nous de plus aujourd’hui? Qu’exige de plus notre esthétique? Où sont les réformateurs? De ce que les compositeurs poussent davantage à l’accentuation, au pathétique, au tragique, au transcendantal , il ne s’ensuit peut-être pas que le public ait perdu le goût de ce genre aimable, contenu, qui, mêlant dans une égale mesure l’intérêt dramatique à l’intérêt musical, composait en somme un spectacle fort attrayant. Un bon opéra-comique n’est pas une course au clocher, mais bien une course à l’autel de deux amoureux à travers mille incidens que l’imagination du librettiste invente et multiplie à plaisir. L’anecdote, voilà son fait, sa raison d’être, et ce bien, il le prend où il le trouve, dans Saint-Simon, dans Duclos, chez tous les chroniqueurs et nouvellistes, jusque dans la gazette du matin, à laquelle il empruntera ses racontages pour les travestir à l’italienne, à l’espagnole, au besoin même à la chinoise, et leur donner bon gré, mal gré, les violons, comme on disait sous le grand roi. Du style, il s’en inquiète peu ; de la moralité, moins encore. Vous verrez par exemple dans un des chefs-d’œuvre du genre, le Postillon de Lonjumeau , un drôle sans foi ni loi, un garnement de la pire espèce, qui pour prix de son ivrognerie, de son ingratitude et de ses lâchetés, trouve à la fin le parfait bonheur.
