SustainableSustainable ShellfishShellfish Recommendations for responsible aquaculture By Heather Deal, M.Sc. As Sustainable Shellfish went to press, the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (MAFF) pulled their draft Code of Practice for Shellfish Aquaculture from circulation. This document, upon which much of Sustainable Shellfish is based, was one component in guiding, monitoring, and reg- ulating B.C.’s rapidly growing shellfish industry. The Code was by no means exhaustive – Sustainable Shellfish aims to address its gaps and limitations, including its lack of con- sideration for stringent environmental safeguards on the expanding industry. Now that the Code of Practice has been abandoned by gov- ernment, the shellfish industry is managed via complaints to the Farm Industry Review Board. This board uses "normal farm practices" as a standard, but does not and, according to MAFF, will not define what "normal farm practices" are with regard to aquaculture. In other words, although there is leg- islation in place, there are no longer governmental stan- dards or guidelines specific to this industry. The BC Shellfish Growers Association (BCSGA) does have an Environmental Management System and Code of Practice, which is very similar to that which MAFF pro- duced. Imported food risk statement Bivalve molluscs and domoic acid Commodity: Bivalve Molluscs. This includes whole or portions of bivalve molluscs that are fresh, frozen, dried or canned, such as cockles, clams, mussels, oysters and scallops. The following products are excluded and therefore not covered by this risk statement: cephalopod molluscs (e.g. squid, octopus, cuttlefish) and jelly fish marinara mix. Analyte: Domoic acid (DA) Recommendation and rationale Is DA in bivalve molluscs a medium or high risk to public health: Yes No Uncertain, further scientific assessment required Rationale: Consumption of seafood containing DA has resulted in human poisoning incidents and deaths. DA is a potent neurotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) within 24-48 hours following ingestion. There is no antidote for ASP. DA is not destroyed by cooking, freezing or other food processing. General description Nature of the analyte: DA is a water-soluble, non-protein amino acid. It is produced by some marine diatoms of the genus Pseudo- nitzschia spp., which are likely to be present to some extent in most coastal marine environments. Isomers of DA are less toxic. Domoic acid is not reliably destroyed by common cooking methods (Vidal et al. 2009) or by autoclaving (McCarron and Hess 2006). Adverse health effects: DA is a potent neurotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) within 24-48 hours following ingestion. There is no antidote for ASP. Clinical signs of acute DA toxicity (or ASP) are mild gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain) from an oral dose ranging between 0.9 and 2 mg DA/kg bw. -

Lewis Introduction l Molluscs (Phylum Molluscs) we a diverse array of "shellfish", which include bivalves (clams, cockles, oysters, mussels - Class Pelecypoda) ,gastropods ( snails, abalone, seahares- Class Gastropods) and cephalopods (squids, octopus, cuttlefish - Class Cephalopoda). These support large marine fisheries, world landings of molluscs exceeding 6 millions tonnes in 1985 (Anon, 1987) and dominated by cephalopods ( 1.67 million mt,), clams, cockles and arkshells ( 1.6 1 million mt.) and oysters ( 1.03 million mt). 2. Previous sessions at the workshop have considered in detail the molluscs of major commercial importance to Pacific Islands. This include molluscs harvested primarily for Industrial purposes (eg. trochus, green snail and pearl shell, for their nacreous shell interiors) as well as those harvested primarily for human consumption (giant clams). 3. There is in addition, however a wide range of molluscs harvested throughout the Pacific Islands for subsistence purposes and in some cases small scale commercial exploitation. Many are gleaned from a variety of inshore habitats, including mud flats, mangrove roots, sandy beaches, reef flats and rubble areas. These molluscs are commonly collected by women, and have traditionally served as important reserve food sources during times of bad weather or poor line fishing. In (tensely populated atolls, they may become a primary fooAsource, Zann ( 1985) noting that in South Tarawa (Kiribati), landings of three lagoon bivalves exceed that of all finfish combined. 4. OHA Issues Advisory for Softshell Clams Along Oregon Coast Removing Skin from Clam’S Siphon Dramatically Reduces Arsenic Levels, Public Health Officials Say

The advisory is most important for people who dig their own clams and target the specific species Mya arenaria, since these clams are not commercially available in markets or restaurants. The advisory, issued today by the OHA Public Health Division, recommends removing the skin from the siphon, or “neck,” of softshell clams before eating them. Softshell clams are found primarily in estuary and intertidal regions of the Oregon coast. This advisory stems from tests the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality performed on a variety of shellfish species collected along the Oregon coast as part of its Water Quality Toxics Monitoring Program. DEQ’s tests found that when analyzed whole without the shell, softshell clams contained unusually high levels of inorganic arsenic. Most of the arsenic was concentrated in the skin covering the clam’s siphon. Researchers found that by removing the skin covering the siphon before eating, the arsenic can be greatly reduced, to levels that are not harmful. -

Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973 Article 1. - These regulations may be cited as the Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973. Article 2. - No person shall fish for, take, or land from any vessel any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4.50 inches). Article 3. - No person shall purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4...50 inches). Article 4. - (1) No person shall fish for, or take any spiny lobster that is in the soft-shell stage. (2) No person shall sell, purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster which is in the soft-shell stage. Article 5. - No person shall land from any vessel or sell or have in his possession any spiny lobster tail which: (a) is in such a condition that it cannot be measured; or (b) has the calcified bar of the tergum of the first abdominal segment fractured. Article 6. - (1) Every person who takes any spiny lobster that is carrying external eggs shall immediately return it alive with as little injury as possi~le into the water from which it was taken (2) No person shall remove the external eggs from any female lobster or from any spiny lobster tail. (3) No person shall buy, sell or expose for sale, or have in his possession any female spiny lobster or any spiny lobster tail from which any of the erteYnal eggs have been removed. -
