Emmett Rice, ^ Emmett F. Rice, 71, Bridgeport, World War 1 ve teran, died Wednesday, March 20. at the Martins Ferry Hospi- tal. He was born in Tyler County. • W. Va., April 8, 1896, and was •a member of the Trinity ! Lutheran Church, Bridgeport, VFW and Bridgeport Legion Post No. 227. Surviving are his widow, Flora Graham Rice, three stepsons, 1 Louis Minet and William Minet, i both of Flushing and Henry I Minet, Newton Falls, Ohio, three i stepdaughters, Mrs. Virginia ! He was bom Nov. 16, 1950 in Martins Ferry, a son of the late Ernest Ray, Sr. and Mureldine (Alltop) Rice. He was a self employed painter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Marie Knepper and Betty Lucille Rice. Surviving are a son, Cotey Ethan Rice, a daughter, Amanda Rae Rice, both of New Martinsville, W. Va.,; two broth ers, Paul Rice and his wife Mary Ann, and Larry L. Rice and his wife Tammy, both of Martins Ferry; two sisters, Leona Kay Rice of Bridgeport and Rena Bauer and her husband Rudy of Illinois. Private services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, Ohio. jg ./ - •Z2T*' : V • ■> RICE, Frank Logsdon, 93, of Woodsdale, Wheeling, W.Va., died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at home with his loving family by his side. Frank was born on October 31, 1912, and was a son of Harry W. and Ida Logsdon Rice. He was the devoted husband of Mary Ellen Voellinger Rice, who passed away on March 9, 2005. They were married 63 years and 9 months, and were the beloved parents of Nancy Ellen O’Leary, their only child. He was a graduate of Tri- adelphia High School, West Liberty State College and Elliot Business College. Frank was a member of “the greatest generation,” one of those who served their country I admirably during World War 11. As a member of the United States Army’s 810th Infantry, he served in the Atlantic The atre of Operations during the war. He was part of the inva sion forces that landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Throughout his entire career, Frank was a manufac turer’s sales representative. He was in the sales division as a sales manager for the Sun shine Biscuit Com pany for 30 years. He then Became an executive sales representative for International Paper Com pany. In 1988, he was recog nized by the United Commer cial Travelers of America for his 50 years of affiliation with the organization. This year he was honored for his 68 years of membership in U.C.T. Frank was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. Wheeling. Upon his retirement from sales, he volunteered many hours for St. Michael’s and the Diocese of Wheeling- Charleston. He wasptn avid and lifelong golfer \v,;o played until the age of 92. He achieved the elusive “hole-in-one” three times during his years on the links. A highlight of his golf ing years was the round of golf he played with the leg endary Sam Snead at the Greenbrier in 1994, when Snead was the pro-emeritus at the resort, and both men were 82 years of age. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; and the Oglebay Park Golf Club. In addition to his parents and loving wife, Mary Ellen, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry D. Rice, and Clarence “Jiggs” Rice; three sisters, Mrs. Tom (Mae) Merinar, Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Loy, and Alice Rice, who died in infancy; one nephew, Tom Merinar, Jr. Surviving are his daughter, Nancy Ellen Rice O’Leary and his son-in-law, Jack O’Leary. He is also survived by a nephew, Robert (Gayle) Creighton of Monroe, Ga.; a niece, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Everson of Martins Ferry, Ohio; a brother-in-law and sis ter-in-law, Jack and Nancy Voellinger Coleman of Woods dale; two nephews-in-law, Fred (Sandra) Williams of Lexington, S.C. and Larry (Janie) Williams of Warwood; two nieces- in-law, Mrs. John (Kathy) Banco and Miss Ann Weir Coleman, both of Woodsdale. Friends received on Mon day, June 12, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheehng The^igil service will be held at 7;30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June I 3, 2006 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Woodsdale with the Rev. Chris Turner as celebrant. Interment in Mt. I He was bom May 2, 1924 in ■ Lewisville, Ohio, to Howard E. and Frances (Mellot) Rice. He was a retired Kent State University Police Officer and retired from National Machine in Tempe, Arizona. He was a member of First Christian Church of Kent, VFW of Mesa, American Legion of Kent, W.K. Ricksecker Lodge #606 F & AM of Aurora, York Rite of Chandler, Scottish Rite of Phoenix, Amaranth of Mesa, and the Order of the Eastern Star of Aurora. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. (Stewart), whom he married June 25, 1944; sons, Richard (Peggy) Rice of Hope Mills, North Carolina and David A. (Margot) Rice of Cincinnati; daughter, Diana L. Secaur of Stow; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, Ohio. Mrs. Hazel B. Rice Mrs. Hazel B. General Hospital, bo She was born Oct. 17, 1891, a daughter of Charles and Emma I Hicks Randolph and was preced ed in death by her husband, Jack, in 1960. She was a member of the Holloway Methodist Chuiteh. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Kidd, Flushing, Mrs. Gladys Robinson, Sisters ville, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Bradley. Burial was in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing. Kj *1 “:>VW N ' Ml V RICE, Helen Ruth Schafer, 92, of Wheeling, W.Va., died on Thursday, February 7, 2008, in the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. She was bom'July 6, 1915 in Wheeling, the daughter of the late Clarence I. and Mary Burke Schafer. Helen was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, Wheeling. She loved to play all kinds of card games with her family and friends. She will be remembered for the love she had for her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband. Harry David Rice in 1998. Surviving are three daughters, Ruth •‘Boots” Ann Hunley, Dot- tie Noble and Trish Anderson 1 and her husband, Bob “Andy,” all of Wheeling; a sister, Dorothy Berthel of Wheeling; six grandchildren, David and Scott Hunley, Shelly Shan non and her husband, Peter, Brian Noble, Whitney and Jessica Anderson; and six great-grand children. Friends will be received at the Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at Bethany Pike, on Satur day, February 9, 2008, from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. with Dr. Larry Kline offici ating. Johnet Dr., St. Clairsville, died Monday in Martins Ferry Hospital. He was born in Martins Ferry on March 27, 1908, a son of the late Clyde and Mabel Jones Rice. He was a former owner- operator of Rice Pharmacy in Tiltonsville. He was a graduate of Ohio Northern University and a member of Thobum United Methodist. Rice also was a charter member of Warren Township Lions Club and had served all offices of the organization. He was named as Man of the Year of the lodge in 1953. Active in civic affairs, he had served as chairman of the Warren Township Park Commission Cs from 1953 to 1970. He also was a past president of the YTR Board of Trade, a member of Ohio City Masonic Lodge of Martins Ferry, Scottish Rite of Steubenville and Belmont Hills Country K Club. * * Surviving are his wife, Faye Tippens Rice; one son, Randall of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister.
