July - August 2010 www.superbirdclub.com email: [email protected] Pete Hamilton Superbird Restoration Petty’s Garage in Level Cross North Carolina has unveiled their restoration of Pete Hamilton’s 1970 Daytona 500 winning Superbird race car. The car is owned by collector Todd Werner, who also owns a Petty 1971 Road Runner among quite a few other significant cars. At left in the group photo, you can see The King behind the car. Left of him is Dale Inman, and at the windshield pillar is Pete Hamilton crew chief, Richie Barsz. I am told that Richie was instrumental in visually identifying the car. Owner Todd Werner is second from left. There is not a lot of information about the history of the car that has been released publicly at this time. I am told that after 1970, the car was reportedly sold to privateer Doc Faustina , who entered it as a 1970 Road Runner in select Grand National races, s during 1971 and 1972. In later years, it was rebodied as a newer Charger and continued to race into the mid 1970’s. I hope to bring you more information about the car soon. At middle left, Richard is checking out the Maurice Petty built Hemi. You can see the car is still being lettered. Immediately after these photos were taken, the car was loaded up and headed for the Mopar Nationals in Columbus where it was on display in the Manufacturers Midway. Whereas, North Carolina takes great pride in its position as the stock car racing capital of the United States and the world; and Whereas, North Carolina is the home of NASCAR, which staged its first sanctioned "purely stock car" race at the Charlotte Speedway on June 19, 1949; and Whereas, since that time, NASCAR and motorsports events have become and remain hugely popular with the people of North Carolina, with more than one million people attending motorsports events in North Carolina each year, thereby substantially enhancing the tourism industry in and economy of North Carolina; and Whereas, North Carolina currently hosts five NASCAR Winston Cup events, with two being held at the North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham and three at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, near Charlotte, and is thus the stock car racing capital of the world; and Whereas, these Winston Cup races materially affect North Carolina's economy, and the loss of any Winston Cup event would have a tremendous negative impact on jobs and tax revenues in the Rockingham and Charlotte areas and the tourism industry in North Carolina in general; and Whereas, North Carolina has established the William States Lee College of Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte which offers an undergraduate program concentrating on motorsports engineering; and -

Louise Smith July 31, 1916-April 15, 2006 Nationality: American Raced between 1946-1956 Origins: Louise Smith was born in Georgia and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, sharing a love of cars with her father and brothers. Her father William Duvall, a mechanic, embraced her initial interest and taught Smith how to drive when she was only four years old. During her first joy-ride, Smith was already behind the wheel of her father’s Model T when she realized she still didn’t know how to properly brake. The car finally came to a stop after crashing through the family chicken coop, and Louise survived the ordeal without a scratch. Throughout her teens, Smith worked in the local cotton mill as a weaver, attending school for only a few hours and then clocking in a 12-hour day at the mill. At the age of 19, she met Noah Smith, the owner of one of the largest automotive junkyards in the region, and they two were married in 1935. Noah’s success allowed Smith to leave her job at the mill and surround herself with customized cars and others who shared her love of machines. Early Influences: As a young woman, Smith was frequently seen speeding down Greenville’s roads, outrunning area police, and riding alongside moonshine runners. When Bill France, Sr. visited the Greenville-Pickens Speedway as a promoter in the 1940s, he was interested in supporting a female driver in the hope of gathering publicity and increasing track attendance. Locals mentioned Smith’s fast-driving reputation and France knew he had found a woman who could compete with the men then dominating the sport. -
