Website Hardware / Software Compatibility

Some Members have reported that the new website does not always behave in the same way across different mobile devices. This is a common problem as suppliers cannot keep pace with all browsers, all new hardware and all Operating System versions; they have to decide which combinations they will support, usually defaulting to the market leaders.

We have sought a clear statement from the supplier with regard to which configurations they certify their software against:

“The mobile website version is supported and tested on the latest versions of Firefox mobile, Chrome for Android 4, and Safari IOS 7. (The mobile version of Internet Explorer (IE) is the least popular browser on the market at this time, which is why it is not included in our release testing. It is only used on the latest Windows Phone 8 Nokia devices, while tablets are using the full version of Windows 8/8.1 with Internet Explorer 11.)

The desktop website version is supported and tested on all major browsers including http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10 and 11. (Note that Microsoft’s support for Windows XP has ended which was the only operating system that could install IE 8. Any Windows 7 or 8 machine must have IE 9 or higher).”

So any Member using a phone or tablet running Firefox, Chrome for Android 4 or Safari IOS 7 should experience a fully functional working website. Other software may not function as expected.

Please make sure that your boats are in the correct berth and labelled with the 2014 launch disk and blue identification sticker. During week commencing Monday 4th August we will be carrying out a thorough check of the Dinghy Park and anyone berthing without the correct stickers, or in an incorrect berth will be liable to action (leading ultimately to eviction) under the RLymYC Dinghy Park regulations. Thank you.

Captain of Racing’s Round Up

After yet another fantastic week on the water, the thought arises: is it the favourable weather, the lifting of the recession or the terrific programme we put on here in the Western Solent? Whatever the causes, entries for our events this year are well up on last year.

Take the Lymington Dinghy Regatta: we had over 100 entries, many of whom (including this writer) chose to enter on the Saturday morning itself. Just finding a car parking space was a challenge because the "T was also running its event from the Club, adding to the noisy exciting atmosphere at the end of Bath Road.

A report on the International Dragon Fleet’s Edinburgh Cup week appears elsewhere. We staged a great event for this top fleet, which contains quite a few demanding characters. How many times do we need to thank all those involved: the huge team of volunteers, all the Club staff; and Nick Ryley who led for the Club? Very many times, I would suggest, for it was an incredibly demanding week for everyone. As a result, the status and profile of the Club has been raised, which can only be good for our future. And I should add my thanks to those running our regular programmes for the disruption caused.

Onwards and upwards: what does August bring? A slight shift in gear: whilst the regular programme continues, the ‘signature event’ will be the annual Youth Week, where we see the racers of tomorrow emerging. On the Bank Holiday weekend, the Potter Dinghy Race returns, then it is downhill to the end of the Thursday Night Series and darker evenings.

http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] On that cheerful note, enjoy the rest of the summer whilst we can.

Robin Taunt, Captain of Racing Cruiser Racers Series

The third race in the Duo Series and the second race in the Cruiser Series both took place in blustery conditions on the 5th and 12th of July respectively. For the Duo, white sails only were the order of the day with no one risking spinnakers shorthanded on a challenging course in the Western Solent. The winners were William Newton's Jelly Baby in IRC 1, Andy Hind's White Mischief in IRC2 and David Gough's Aventurera in Lymington Handicap.

The Cruiser Race was held on a warm, bright afternoon in the Bay with a course to Christchurch Ledge and back via North Head. After a terrific downwind run back, this time with spinnakers up, Richard Down's Islay was declared the winner in LH1 and Richard Truscott's Unity in LH2. Both these events are fantastic fun. There are still 2 more races to sail in each series so plenty of time to enter and enjoy the remainder of the racing.

What better way is there to spend a Saturday summer's day?!"

Richard Truscott, Captain of Cruiser Racers

Lymington Classics Regatta

Reduced Entry has now been extended for the Lymington Classics Regatta which is taking place on the 13th & 14th September.

The event in conjunction with the British Classics Yacht Club, Lymington Yacht Haven & Lymington Harbour Commissioners will see class starts for IRC Classic Cruisers, Gaffers, http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] Darings, Meter boats and many others in what we hope will become a stable regatta in our event calendar.

Dragon Edinburgh Cup July 2014

Done and Dusted

“Done” yes, but we will come back to the “dusted” later. Prince Philip used to race his Dragon “Bluebottle” at Cowes - much as he now races his carriage and four horses - at full tilt. It was through this interest he came to present the Edinburgh Cup in 1949. I was asked to co-ordinate the event in early summer 2013, and the first meeting with the British Dragon representatives was in Cowes Week.

My job was to create a background where the experts could get on with their jobs without bothering about the trivia. We are unbelievable lucky in this Club to have experts in all areas so that the Royal Lymington can take on high level events without any qualms. Experts like John Doerr, with Americas Cup expertise, to arrange the protest committee, Roger Wilson, fresh from the Olympics as Race Officer, Harris to make sure the event did not clog up the river, our diet being overseen by Hannah Neve and the enthusiasm and event knowledge of Kirsty Timmis, the office team and bar and catering. Once we had the backbone the body could be fleshed out through the winter. However to maintain this interest and enthusiasm we must continue to run these prestigious events.

http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] We had 24 entries which made for good racing in Christchurch Bay with what was described as champagne . The wind was generally from the northwest with sea breezes being rather shy. The first day was but after that moderate races gave keen racing with Graham and Julia Bailey from Cowes winning with a day to spare. Lawrie Smith from Lymington was 2nd overall. There was a secondary event for Corinthian Crews, some top boats race in the Edinburgh Cup with professionals, and this, the Chairman’s Decanter, was won by Selina Dicker.

Christchurch Bay was lauded by one competitor who cited the fourth day when the first two boats at the weather mark had been to opposite sides on the first beat and yet rounded within a boats length of each other. The Shingles however proved a honey pot to the Dragons on the sail in to the Club. At one point, driving one of the towing boats in 0.5 metres of water I had to explain to one sailor that the breaking waves ahead might be injurious to both his and the Dragons health!

So, back to the “Dusted”. The prize giving was splendid with copious prizes and popular winners. However the Edinburgh Cup was missing, still in someone’s cupboard in Burnham due to a mix up of smoke signals (I suppose) between two dragons. The winner was presented with a nice photo of the cup and we didn’t have to dust it.

Dinghies

Potter Dinghy Race Saturday 23rd August

Following the success of last year's inaugural race, Jane Pitt-Pitts and her team will again be running the Potter Dinghy Race on the morning of Saturday 23rd August. This is one great big handicap race for all dinghies from Optimists via to foiling Moths, scored on average lap times like the Potter Ship. Entry is free. Boats must be helmed by a Club Member. Please click the banner for more information.

Bart's Bash Sunday 21st September Dinghies and keelboats will race (separately) for this charity event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. The race starts at 11am, with keelboats from the platform and dinghies from a committee boat to the west. The Club will host a lunch, prizegiving and charity raffle/auction after the race for the dinghies and keelboats together.

Visiting boats are welcome at all these event so please encourage your friends to come down too. Henri Lloyd Lymington Dinghy Regatta

On the 19th and 20th of July Lymington Town Sailing Club and the Royal Lymington Yacht Club combined forces to organise the Lymington Dinghy Regatta 2014. The event was generously sponsored by the Henri Lloyd Lymington Sailing Store, Nick Cox Yacht Chandlers, English Braids and Harken. With a dubious weather forecast of variable winds and thunder storms the organising committee were initially anxious that entry numbers would be affected, but all expectations were exceeded with just over one hundred confirmed entries by the start of racing at 1300hrs on Saturday. The fleet was spread across two separate race areas, with Fast Handicap, RS400, Blazes and Fireflies to the east and Medium and Slow handicap and Lymington River classes to the west. For full results of the weekend's races please click here.

The feedback from competitors was all positive and the general feeling was that the Lymington Dinghy Regatta is now a firmly established event in the local calendar.

Just a reminder that there will be NO Monday Night Dinghies on Monday 11th August due to this year's Youth Week.

After the success of the early prize giving we will also be awarding bottle prizes in the bar after racing on the last Monday night. (1st September)

Cruising

July has been a fantastic month for sailing with the hot weather and kind winds.

We had our three day meet to Bembridge which was very well attended with boats arriving before the meet and staying on after. We had several new members join us on a meet for the first time and Vice Commodore came for one night. http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] Our next meet is a day sail to Yarmouth on Tuesday Aug 5th sign up on the board or let me know if you are coming. At the end of August we have our meet to Poole and the Bournemouth Air Show 29th to 31st. Details on line, and sign-up sheet on the notice board.

As the summer goes on please turn your thoughts to entering a log or blog at the end of the season, we can only award these cups and trophies if Members enter.

Up to 16 berths have been provisionally reserved and we need to confirm numbers by mid- August, so if you plan to attend please sign up on the Club notice board or email me with your boat name, type (sail or motor) LOA, beam, total number of crew and menu choices as soon as possible.

Ken Claydon, Cruising Sub Committee Rallying on the Norfolk Broads - A Final Reminder for 6 and 13 September.

It’s not too late to book your boat for this year’s rally on the Norfolk Broads. Recent enquiries of several boat yards (yachts and power cruiser) indicate that they still have availability should you want to soak up the sun and atmosphere of the Norfolk Broads.

On Sunday, 24th August, from 11.30, your organiser, Derek Barnard, will be hosting a get together for those going on this adventure in the Island Room of the Club. This is an opportunity to find out what to see and do on the Broads, meet who is going and agree rendezvous points. So, if you want to know more about this event then come along and chat through your requirements and see if it’s right for you.

Meanwhile, why not look at web site www.enjoythebroads.com to find out more about the Broads. Contact Derek Barnard on email: [email protected]

Some 25 skippers and their crews participated in this year’s summer cruise. As last year there were no fixed destinations or events. The majority of participants chose to cruise the West Country but a sizeable contingent headed for North and South Brittany.

Everyone kept up to date with 'fleet' movements through a regular text update of ports of call and some satisfying passage making and a number of enjoyable social gatherings took place from late May to early July.

The cruise last summer was by its nature something of an experiment but with positive feedback the 'experiment' was repeated this year. Individual feedback will be sought from participants and the format will be on the agenda for discussion at the cruising forum in the autumn but early indications are positive.

Ken Claydon, Cruising Sub Committee Two Day Meet at Bembridge IOW, Tuesday & Wednesday 15th to 17th July 2014.

The fine summer weather persuaded 16 boats to venture along the Solent to Bembridge, where we were all efficiently accommodated in Duver Marina. The BBQ on the Tuesday night was attended by 35 people. The Marina had put at our disposal their two Gas barbecues and some tables and chairs together with a pavilion which provided a great setting for our social get together. Daytime activity was generally centred on the many walks around the area and, for some, included a venture into crazy golf! On the Wednesday night we made our way by water taxi to the Bembridge Sailing Club for dinner where we were very well received and enjoyed the magnificent views over the harbour before being served an excellent three course meal. Several boats enjoyed Bembridge so much that they either arrived earlier or left later than the Rally dates. With the record of such an enjoyable social gathering and the excellent http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] weather on this and the previous year, Bembridge remains a top destination for future rallies.

XOD

What a great summer! Wednesday and Saturday racing has been fantastic with a wide variety of winning boats, and we have seen the rise of some of our local youth sailors as they prepared for Cowes Classic Week as well as Cowes Week itself.

These youth sailors have come from many different classes; Lasers, Cadets, 29ers, 49ers, 420s, 470s, RS200 etc, and many are still very actively involved in these classes, with one or two campaigning for Olympic selection. It’s fantastic to see them enjoying the highly competitive sailing that X boats provide whilst they learn from the old pros and Olympians alike: and showing the old hands a thing or two!

Two pictures of our young sailors sailing: X33 Claire de Lune and X72 Venus respectively: Max Crowe is a co-owner of X33 Clair de Lune and sails with Charlie Dodd and Jack Collings on occasions. James Dodd sailed X142 Dolce Vita with Peter Fryer (definitely not a youth) and Jack Collings.

http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] Lymington boats took three of the first places at Cowes Classic Week out of six races, in a fleet of fifty boats and in very tricky conditions with major dead patches and winds shifts across the course in many of the races. It was good to see that in the races where the wind was more consistent, Lymington boats were often in the top 10. Max Crowe with his young crew finished top Lymington boat in fifth place, due to very consistent results with only one race outside of the top 20 in the race that many will want to forget - in excess of a 90 degree wind shift, dead patches, spinnakers launched halfway up the beat!

The team of Nik Froud, Henry Lloyd Williams and Charlie Cox have been provided with a bursary for their entry at Cowes Week where they will be sailing X72 Venus, kindly provided by Ray Mitchell.

Many boats and crews are now getting ready for Cowes Week and this will be reported on in the next edition of ePotterNews.

Captain's Trophy, 22nd July

In perfect summery conditions 14 scows competed for the Captain's Trophy on Tuesday 22nd July.for Race Officer Vince Sutherland ran four short races, each of two laps around a quadrilateral course. Race 1 looked like a win for Jeremy and Max Vines sailing Dodgem who crossed the fleet at the start on port tack to get inshore and out of the tide early. However an infringement and an overly-close encounter with a mark required penalty turns and let others through. , Karl Thorne and Olivia Bemis-Driscoll sailing Wizard were the winners with Mike Urwin in Nutshell second and newcomer to the class, Paul Driscoll, crewed by Astrid Bemis-Driscoll in Wild Rose finishing third.

Race 2 saw Nutshell take the lead with Dodgem second and Wizard third. In race 3 Wizard was placed first, ahead of Wild Rose and Nutshell. The course was changed for the last race, a short beat, an even shorter reach and then a long run back into the river and home. As the breeze was dying the race was shortened and Wizard was the winner, Nutshell second despite having chosen the "wrong end" of the starting line and Wild Rose was third.

Overall winner and first double hander were Karl Thorne and Olivia Bemis-Driscoll. Second overall and first single hander was Mike Urwin.

New Trophy for Top Scow Sailor

A new cup, the Christine Sutherland Cup, has been presented to the Scow Division by Vince Sutherland. It will be awarded each year at the AGM Dinner in November and will go to the Scow sailor who has the lowest aggregate score from all the Club's Scow races and the Nationals.

"I would like to donate it to the RLymYC Scow group as a Victor Ludorum trophy, to embrace all the events where Scows get a specific result." said Vince when he handed the Cup to Dunlop Stewart, Captain of Scows. "My intention is to encourage maximum participation, as non-entry would be credited as DNS in those events for scoring purposes. I think this is a very good group and would wish to keep it strong."

Qualifying events include the Alexina, Hinxman and Captain's Trophy series, the Figure of Eight Race, the Monday Nights series and the Scow Championships.

The Cup will be presented at the 2014 AGM Dinner on 3rd November.

It started with a joint weekend in Lymington for the Worlds and European Teams. The sailors did a lot of team racing and got to grips with the short chop that we have here, and is so typical of the waters in Argentina (where the World Championships will be held in October).

The same weekend it was the Hayling Island Open, won by Hattie Rogers for the second year running. Fellow Lymington sailor Arthur Fry came 3rd and in the regatta fleet Santi Sesto (6th) and Freya Cox (9th) also had a good regatta. Some those left at home had a pop at the LR Scow Nationals (Junior Fleet) at Keyhaven!

A number of Worlds teams converged in Flanders plus a strong showing from USA. Two days of North Sea gales tested the fleet almost as much as the following three days of flat calm. Lymington sailor Johnny Thompson, sailing for the GBR Flanders Team, came in 23rd; Arthur Fry, as a privateer, enjoyed the mixed conditions to finish 13th. And Vita Heathcote, as part of the GBR Worlds Team who were using the event as part of their build up, finished up 7th.

The main event however was the European Championships in Dublin. Some really testing conditions – gales, rain, fog and a fickle breeze made for some variable results. Six of the seven GBR sailors were from Lymington and they all had their moments – Ella Bennett had one especially good day when she scored two 2nd place. This is the only event where the boys and the girls race separately. Overall Milo Gill-Taylor came 43rd in Gold Fleet; Oliver Hill 15th in Silver and Haydn Sewell 6th in Bronze. For the girls Ella Bennett was 40th in Gold Fleet and Julia Mellers 46th. Sophie Holloway came 15th in the Silver Fleet. Milo and Ella now move on; they have been a great inspiration to all those trailing in their wake, and we wish them the best of luck in their Youth classes.

The same week there was another big event in a magical corner of south western France, at the French National Championships. GBR sent their Development Team into battle and their Lymington sailors did the best – Arthur Fry (13th), William Heathcote (16th) and th th th http://jonas.bm23.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=ef0aj2ygwta7v2fpk7ekjjioxbcgh&ssid=30693&t=3[06/09/2014 09:47:55] Charlotte Boyle (38 ). Of the privateers Vita Heathcote (9 ) and Milly Boyle (28 ) also enjoyed the relaxed schedule of surfing all morning and a little light racing in the afternoons.

While all this was going on there was plenty of action closer to home, at the Southern Area Championships held at Parkstone Yacht Club. Ellen Main (2nd) had her pop at the top, followed by Hattie Rogers (4th), Johnny Thompson (6th and Zac West (9th).
