The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 11 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Family reunions often take place during festive times or during the holiday season, be it summer or winter. Uniquely, for our Old Boys it happens during the first weekend of September. OBA Day is a day for a big family reunion. Joseph’s is home and the OBA is family. It is indeed a happy occasion for me to address the OBA family through this newsletter.

As always, the OBA has been a pillar of support to the School. Old Boys have given very generously of their time, expertise and effort to start new initiatives like the Innovation Lab, the Career Talks and the Mentoring programme. They have continued with the popular OBA Buzz which helps to unearth new talent. Very generous scholarships from the OBA for needy and deserving students ensure that the Jesuit motto of “Men and Women for others” is followed in letter and spirit. The President and the Managing Committee have done much to strengthen ties across batches by conducting tournaments in golf and football for the Old Boys. There is much encouragement for our present students in the area of sports and sponsoring breakfast for our young (and hungry!) hockey boys is a gesture which has been warmly welcomed.

As the years roll on, younger Old Boys have been coming forward to take up the responsibility of running the programmes and in administering the activities of the OBA. As in any family, transition comes with its share of differences in ideas, styles of working and goals. I am sure that the legacy of almost a century of yeoman service rendered by the OBA to its Alma Mater will be the guiding spirit which will ensure that the OBA works as a cohesive team, with the welfare of the School and the Old boys as its main goal.

As OBA Day approaches, I wish our Old Boys all success, happy reunions, much joy and good luck in all they do.

Fr. Clifford Sequeira, SJ

Principal, SJBHS

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 12 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

My Dear Fellow Josephites,

Greetings from the OBA!

At the outset, I thank you for the support and encouragement we received throughout the year. This is my first year as President of the OBA and I was greatly enthused by the kind words of encouragement I received from Old Boys, quite literally, from all over the world encouraging us to make our events memorable and successful. We want as many Old Boys as is possible involved in our activities and we have been successful in doing so this year.

Our financial corpus has grown from Rs. 2.72 crore to Rs. 3.19 crore, a growth of 17½ per cent which enabled us to think of bigger and better events and programs. All this could not have happened without the continued generosity of Old Boys and for this also, I am grateful.

The year gone by was a mix of the old and the new – traditional events were held with an emphasis on reaching out to Old Boys who would not otherwise attend, while new and exciting initiatives were launched for students and Old Boys.

Mr. Vijay Nazareth from the batch of 1978 (North America Chapter) has been instrumental in setting up this initiative along with Mr. Jyotinath Ganguly from the batch of 1975 (Coordinator from the Managing Committee) which was launched this academic year.

The Career Day Series, mainly for the 10th standard is to aid the students to make a career choice. Mr. Vijay Alphonse from the batch of 1990 coordinated this effort of putting together career leads for the Speaker Series which was to be conducted over 5 sessions. In all, eight Old Boys were involved in this process.

The Career Mentoring initiative was for the 11th and 12th standards. This is an online help for career decisions with thirty Old Boys signing up for this initiative, the Old Boys being based mainly in India and the United States.

The Innovation Lab is targeted towards the students of the 7th to the 9th standards. It is project-based with a deadline of 31st October 2016 and fifteen Old Boys have signed up to assess the projects. We would like to urge all old students who are interested to volunteer for this initiative. Those of you interested may get in touch with Mr. Jyotinath Ganguly at [email protected]

This time, the OBA Coorg Chapter will be including a Golf Tournament as a part of the Connect to be held at the Mercara Downs Golf Club on 1st October 2016. We look forward to seeing you with your families at the Connects.

God has blessed many Old Boys abundantly and we have never forgotten students who need a hand. Various scholarship funds have been established by Old Boys to support meritorious students in need of financial assistance. In the past year, we disbursed Rs. 10 lakhs to 100 students and we expect your generous contributions to continue so that we can widen and deepen the assistance to worthy students.

A new initiative this year has been to establish a corpus for a Mid-Day Meal program for students in need. Proceeds from the Blue & White Bash this year will be applied to seed the corpus for the Mid-Day Meal program. Please donate generously to this program.

Reunions were held at Kerala, Coorg and Goa and these get-togethers brought Old Boys from various age groups to interact in the true Josephite spirit. The OBA also instituted schemes, funds collected under which were disbursed towards scholarships to needy students, promotion of cultural activities in the School, conducting of Career Guidance programmes for students and also towards welfare of staff.

Back to School – Golden Greats: OBA events are full of life and vigour, just as our time in School was! However, older Old Boys sometimes need to meet at a more relaxed pace. For the first time, we had an event for the Old Boys who graduated prior to 1980 – the Older Old Boys. It was held on the 22nd of November 2015 at the Loyola Sports Complex. Inter-House games were organised and contested with all enthusiasm and the event was enjoyed by all those who attended. An impromptu vocal performance by Lyn Machado (1970) was much appreciated, as was the visit by Mrs. Sait, former Hindi teacher in the School, as sharp as ever.

Inter-Batch 5-a-side Football Tournament: Another first for the OBA was the Inter-Batch 5-a-side Football Tournament which was organised on the 29th of November and 6th of December 2015 in association with Bengaluru Football Club, the leading pro-football club of India. The tournament had 24 teams representing as many batches which participated in keenly contested games. The Batch of 1990 won the pre-1991 category while the Batch of 2006 took the honours in the post-1990 category. The Batch of 2004 was the runner-up. The tournament witnessed in action over 400 Old Boys on the two days, including outstationed Old Boys from Bombay, Dubai and even as far as Australia. The tournament was organised by Naren K. N. (2006), Reo Raymond (2005) and Vivek George (2004).

Maurice de Rebello conducted the quiz for the 27th successive year.

Career Day Series, Career Mentoring and the Innovation Lab: The OBA and the School have been of the mind that students need direction and information about career options, when in the crucial years from Std. 10 to 12. Vijay Nazareth (1978 - North America Chapter) and Jyotinath Ganguly (1975) spearheaded the Career Day Series, Mentoring and the Innovation Lab in answer to that requirement. The Career Day Series program is targeted at the Std. 10 students to provide information so that they can make informed career choices. Too often, students are faced with information overload without any sense of direction and are confused. Vijay Alphonse (1990) coordinated this effort of putting together career leads for the Speaker Series which was conducted over 5 sessions. In all, eight Old Boys were involved in this process where students were exposed to regular and alternative careers. The Career Mentoring initiative for the 11th and 12th standards is an online help for students to make career decisions with the input of Old Boys. Thirty Old Boys volunteered for this initiative to help students who have made broad career choices to make the right choices. Old Boys who volunteered to be Mentors are presently located in India or the United States. The Innovation Lab is targeted at the students of the 7th to the 9th standards. Students work on innovative projects outside their curriculum and are to submit the projects by 31st October 2016. Fifteen Old Boys have volunteered to assess the projects. The projects will give the School and the Association a good idea of where students’ interests lie and how we can help them.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 20 OBA Connect: Old Boys never forget St. Joseph’s! The Connect with the School is never lost. The OBA Connects were held this year as always in Coorg, Kerala and Goa. In the year ahead, we shall add another – OBA Connect Mangalore! The Connects are regularly communicated and I request Old Boys to make it for at least one of these events during the year, each being unique. This time, the OBA Coorg Chapter will be including a Golf Tournament as a part of the Connect to be held at the Mercara Downs Golf Club on the 1st of October 2016. We look forward to seeing you with your families at the Connects.

OBA Scholarships: God has blessed many Old Boys abundantly and we have never forgotten students who need a hand. Various scholarship funds have been established by Old Boys to support meritorious students in need of financial assistance. In the past year, we disbursed Rs. 10 lakhs to 100 students and we expect your generous contributions to continue so that we can widen and deepen the assistance to worthy students.

Awards: Over Rs. 1 lakh was given as prizes to the students passing out of the ISC and ICSE classes. The prizes that are given are for standing first in the School, being the best in studies and games, being the best swimmer, for securing the highest marks in each subject etc. The prizes include a trophy, a certificate and a cheque. The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 36 being prepared to tell the world about the OBA. A communication system to connect with Old Boys via SMS and e-mail has been set up by Mr. Rajeev Shenoy, Mr. Antonio Justin and Mr. Greg D’Sa. About 1600 Old Boys have been listed. In conclusion, he thanked the Principal, Fr. Clifford Sequeira and described him as a very warm, humble, accessible and firm person. He said that it is indeed a Herculean task to keep 3000 kids in line. He said that he enjoyed working with the Principal. He also thanked the Secretary, Mr. Brian D’Lima and the members of the Managing Committee for their support during the year. 97.8 Principal’s Address: The Principal, Fr. Clifford Sequeira, said that the inauguration of the Sports Complex was a red-letter day in the history of the school and that it was closely linked to the OBA. Fr. mentioned that the idea was set in motion by Mr. Jimmy Anklesaria and that the OBA has been closely associated with school activities like the OBA Buzz (spearheaded by Mr. Shashi Lewis), the Kaizen Teacher Training Programme and motivational talks for students. Fr. added that the school has secured 100 per cent passes in both the Std. X and XII exams. Fr. Sequeira then made a few suggestions to improve the overall standards in school like a Teacher Welfare Fund to reward loyal teachers, pensions, in-service staff training programmes and remedial classes for weaker students. He opined that school exams have to be reformed: there should be a shift from rote learning to newer approaches. Teachers have to have a hands-on approach in subjects like Science and Mathematics. Fr. said that the OBA was one of the best alumni associations in the country and that mere words could not adequately describe Mr. Jimmy Anklesaria’s contribution to the school. Fr. thanked the President, Mr. Gopal Bengeri and the Secretary, Mr. Brian D’Lima for their services to the school. Fr. requested each and every one present to contribute to the OBA. On this note, Fr. Sequeira concluded his speech by wishing everyone a pleasant day. 97.9 To confirm the Minutes and Proceedings of the 96th Annual General Meeting held on September 7, 2014: The President asked if the Minutes could be taken as approved. CITATION FOR RAGAVENDRA R. BALIGA RECIPIENT OF THE OBA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – 2015

Dr. Ragavendra R. Baliga, MD, DNB, MBA, FACC, FACP, FRCP (Edin), is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Ohio State University and Associate Director, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.

Dr. Baliga is Editor-in-Chief, Textbook of Cardiology, McGraw Hill; Series Editor, Oxford University Press Cardiovascular Handbook Series; Deputy Editor, Global Heart Journal and Associate Editor of American College of Cardiology Review Journal and Cardiology Review. He is currently board certified in (i) Internal Medicine, (ii) Cardiovascular Disease, and (iii) Advanced Heart Failure Transplant Cardiology. He has held teaching responsibilities at University of Aberdeen, Hammersmith Hospital (University of London), Harvard Medical School, University of Michigan, and Ohio State University.

Moreover, Dr. Baliga has written seventeen world-class textbooks – some published in multiple languages – over forty book chapters, over three hundred and fifty articles in professional journals, and has been on the Editorial Boards of twenty leading journals.

A remarkable achievement was writing a book “200 Cases in Clinical Medicine”, later expanded to “250 Cases in Medicine” that has become a reference manual for medical students. This book, along with other publications and presentations, enabled Dr. Baliga to win a NIH National Research Service Award, a 2-year grant to work at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Baliga epitomizes what it means to “win and spread our school’s renown” and “with our deeds enrich her crown”.

Despite all of these profound accomplishments, Ragaven, as we know him, remains the same person we knew as a studious yet playful young boy at St. Joseph’s. He retains his warmth, his easy-going nature, his wit and readiness to share. He recently demonstrated his latent poetic skills by composing a series of odes dedicated to our School and teachers.

Dr. Baliga is a role-model for our times. He has set a standard for excellence that is a compelling testimony to what “Faith and Toil” can accomplish. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be a well-deserved “victor’s worthy crown” for him. However, the ever-humble and self-effacing Dr. Baliga will probably say, “...the only thing this award will tell the students and alumni of St. Joseph’s is that if I can do this, then all of you can”.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 53 THE SJBHS OBA TEACHER KAIZEN PROGRAMME – II PILOT The Second Pilot of the SJBHS OBA Teacher Kaizen Programme was conducted over six sessions from November 15, 2015 to December 9, 2015.

Fifteen teachers of the Middle School section, teaching various subjects in Classes 5 and 6, attended the Programme.

The six sessions were conducted by Gopal Bengeri, Rohith K.N. and Ms. Arundathi Raja. The following aspects of teaching methods were covered during the sessions:

1. Using games to enrich student vocabulary and sentence construction in different languages.

2. Assigning students “to make and to do” projects in chapters not yet covered in class, as a preparatory step to enable “learning without teaching”.

3. Poise, stance, posture, expression, breathing, “throwing voice”, speech delivery.

4. Using dramatics as a medium of instruction for subjects of Liberal Arts.

5. Developing question papers that test learning and understanding of the subject rather than simply test student knowledge.

Teachers participated in simple games that showed how one could improve students’ vocabulary and sentence construction without having to read a chapter or extract of text. The games are simple enough to be played anywhere – whether in class, or, even on the way to school as they do not require any special instruments or specialized boards – just basic stationery.

During the sessions, teachers completed projects that demonstrated the principle that even if a student hasn’t yet been taught a chapter, he/she can complete a project by following a set of instructions and understand the project. The teachers were then encouraged to ask the class questions about the project, which would, in turn, enhance the students’ learning experience and understanding of the subject – without the teacher having, traditionally, taught the chapter.

Teachers realized that most of their stress arises because they have to keep their voices raised through the day – simply to be heard in class. They learnt how to speak loudly without straining their vocal chords, by practicing some simple breathing techniques. Teachers also went through the steps of expressing themselves without uttering a word – by manipulating their own facial expressions, body positioning, expression of their eyes, and their actions. They also understood how the observer interprets certain actions and learnt how to modify their actions, at will, to convey different emotions in class – without straining their vocal chords.

Teachers were introduced to design concepts. They were introduced to Product-centric design and User-centric design. These ideas will help teachers design assignments, question papers and tests that they give their students. Design fundamentals also help teachers design curriculum, methodology and classroom activities for optimum results.

Feedback from teachers was very positive. They felt all sessions were useful and they have, for the Christmas holidays, given the students projects as holiday homework in chapters that will be taught after school reopens. Feedback from teachers was oral, in the presence of Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Principal.

The OBA Kaizen Team comprised (in alphabetical order) Gopal Bengeri, Krishnaswamy A.G., Siddharth Raja, Umakanth Alva, Vinay Kamath and Zaki Khaleeli.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 81 A TRIBUTE TO FR. DENIS F. COELHO, SJ (1926-2016) Principal of SJBHS from 1983 to 1993

My earliest memory of Fr. Denis Coelho is of the time when Fr. was invited to be the Chief Guest at the Annual Sports Day of St. Anthony’s Boys’ School. The year was 1988 and I, as the Head Boy of the school, was to accord Fr. a garlanded welcome to the event. I was as nervous as can be at the prospect of having to welcome the Chief Guest, my potential Principal of the near future. “Fr Coelho will be watching each of you with a hawk’s eye” we were told, our impending admission to St. Joseph’s would depend on our behaviour on that day. In stark contrast to the images of the austere disciplinarian that I had conjured up in my mind, I was greeted by a gentle, smiling man who instantly put me at ease with his warm, friendly demeanour and kind words.

Fr. Denis Coelho was my Principal for the four and half years that followed and I held him in the highest esteem during that period. I could narrate several incidents which have made an impression on me; however, this specific parable that he had related during one of the Friday ‘Instructions’ period has grown to become the second motto of my life (the first being ‘Faith and Toil’).

It was about the inscription of ‘He died climbing’ on the tombstone of a Swiss mountaineer. The inscription, Fr. Coelho told us, is not just literal or descriptive of the manner of his death. It is figurative in the sense that no matter what our age or state in life, we still have a little more that can be done. There are contributions to be made, there is value to be added. You do not stop, you have to keep going..and growing. Look for that next peak, that next vista..

I realise now, 26 years later, that Fr. Coelho had on that day not simply shared with us a story that he had read but had described the life that he led. I now pray that one more prayer for you, Dear Fr., for you had truly written that one more song, planted that one more sapling, given that crank one more turn.

Rajeev Shenoy Class of 1996

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 82 TRIBUTES TO FR. HILARY PEREIRA, SJ (1924–2015) Principal of SJBHS from 1963 to 1968

Fr. Hilary Pereira or COP as he came to be called, arrived in school in mid-1963, when we had reached the 6th Standard. He seemed stern and for some reason I recall that he almost always carried a cane – (like the Heads of State of some African Nations). In 1965 January, I think, he had organized with the PTA Committee the premiere of the movie My Fair Lady – the funds were for the filter for the swimming pool. As I recall, a grand total of about Rs. 1,24,000 or so was collected for this purpose. The entire school was abuzz with this and there after several clones of Prof. Higgins sprouted around the school. The following year, to assist the funds required for various things around the school, he had organized a Fancy Fete, which too had been a grand success. The first of its kind as I recall. Later that year or the next, again for the first time, he arranged for those of us in the 8th to take a Vocational or Aptitude Test, to determine as to which course of study we pursued. To me personally it was a disaster – for, at that time, the pressure was to do Maths. I must have scored pretty low and was asked to join the Arts stream which would have lead me into a BA. He wanted to know as to what made me think that I would fare well in Maths.

In 1966 or 67, there was some serious crisis with the School Captain, a hefty Sardar (a boarder), having rumoured to have been whipped and thereafter leaving the school. He was old-school and liberal with the use of the cane for I too have endured it once. At another time, I had got a good dressing down when I contradicted him – that a teacher hadn’t come to class and when he realized that I was right, he asked me, as I remember, to run to the football goal post (near the College end). I was lucky he was walking along the corridor without his cane.

Maybe his attitude created some negative feelings in many of us, provoking several guys to wantonly wanted to mess around the school. I remember, that in 1967, a James Bond movie was released and the sign 007 was very popular (especially since we couldn’t watch an “Adults Only” movie). That year, as the annual whitewash of the school began just before Sports Day and we had the entire morning free to wonder around while the practice for Figure Running and Club Swinging went on, some of us went around rubber stamping the freshly painted walls with the Double O Seven symbol – of a gun, craftily etched out by a class mate.

After he left the school in 1968, I remember seeing him a few times at the College Hostel or elsewhere but had stayed away with a nod from a distance. It was not until 76 or 78, when I give him a drop to St Germains where he was the Principal, that I met him again. He had remembered me and recalled as to what my father was doing and asked for two bags of cement for some repair work at the school.

A large number of us met him at the 40th reunion of the 1968 batch during the dinner hosted at the school. He spoke to all of us and our wives and he enjoyed himself that evening. He went to explain to us about the whip or cane that he carried and how he acquired the name COP. A few years ago, when some of us started visiting Mount St. Joseph where had retired to, I was shocked to see him so frail and vulnerable – his stern look was all gone. The first time we met him there, he asked my name. He remembered me and asked if I was continuing my father’s business and he went on to introduce me and the others to the priests there. Gradually, as Alzheimer’s took hold of him we had to reintroduce ourselves each time we went. But when someone new went along, he would say that he could remember me as I come there from time to time but wanted to know our names again. He would at times launch into something he recalled from his days as Principal at school. He had become so forgetful, that he would repeatedly ask us if we had had coffee or will we stay on for lunch. His stern-faced look of the ‘60s will stay on…

Hemchandra Basappa Class of 1968

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 83 Fr. Hilary Pereira joined, I think in 1963, when Fr. Jacques was the Principal. He was first appointed as the Prefect (in-charge) of the Senior Dormitory before he succeeded Fr. Jacques as Principal. He took his job very seriously and kept a very serious watch on the seniors who smoked, bunked school to watch movies and especially, to increase the height of the walls between Good Shepherds and St. Joseph’s.

His key modus operandi was to peep through those large-sized key holes of the large doors of the dormitory and other rooms. Hence the name ‘COP’. In later years, he would introduce himself to Old Boys as ‘COP’.

A reasonably good sportsman and a strong swimmer, he would play football with us and swim long hours with us students - the only swimmer I have seen swimming forward with both hands in the air. He told us once that the day he was to write an important exam, his mother passed away. He was probably in the seminary then. He somehow managed to write the exam and then proceeded to bury his mother.

Today, students jump off buildings when scolded by teachers or ragged by colleagues. COP swung his cane at will and I have experienced the pain a few times. He was the first known Principal to carry his portable and hidden cane in his cassock - a two-meter length of rolled up cable wire. Generally, you got two for one as the cable first hit the palm and then wrapped itself around one’s hand.

An excellent, tough Principal who got the job done and improved the school in many ways.

Col. Francis Machado Class of 1969

I have fond memories of Fr. Hilary and also of the many times I’ve been caned and wired for my low score in the weekly tests.

Here’s an incident that left a mark - my brother Hormese and I we trying to knock down a few almonds (we boarders were always hungry). Remember the tree at the side of the basketball court before the present building was put up? I had thrown my hockey stick and it got stuck on the tree. I was climbing the tree when Fr. Hilary came by. “George, come to my room”. Expecting the worst, I went to his room, knocked and went in. So used to the caning ritual, I was preparing my palms for a few smiters. Fr. Hilary was behind his desk. He looked at me and then opened his drawer and took out a slab of chocolate and gave it to me. “Go share it with your brother.”

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 84 DR. GERARD ARANHA (1960) - MAGNIFICO OF MEDICINE

Dr. Gerard Aranha of Loyola University has earned yet another round of plaudits for his professional achievements. A surgical oncologist at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL, Gerard was counted among the magnificos of medicine when he was named in August to Newsweek’s very exclusive List of Top Cancer Doctors 2015. This list is compiled by Newsweek, in conjunction with Castle Connolly Medical LTD, the well-respected publisher of America’s Top Doctors®, through peer nominations and extensive research1.

The Castle Connolly physician-led research team makes tens of thousands of phone calls each year, talking with leading specialists, chairs of clinical departments and vice presidents of medical affairs, seeking to gather further information regarding the top specialists for most diseases and procedures. Each year, Castle Connolly receives nearly 100,000 nominations via this process. After a careful review of credentials, less than 3% of these nominations are selected for inclusion in the final list2.

Gerard’s induction to this coterie of highly distinguished and accomplished doctors is the latest of many honors and recognitions he has earned in his very productive medical career. In fact, he has been named several times over the years to the lists of top doctors in Chicago and the US, and has been often cited in Chicago Magazine.

Born in Bangalore, India, he graduated from St. Joseph’s Boys High School (Bangalore) in 1960, and then went on to earn an MBBS (equivalent of MD) from Bangalore Medical College in 1967. Over the next ten years, he held various positions in several universities and hospitals in the US and India. He began his Loyola career in 1977 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Stritch School of Medicine, and was appointed to full professorship at Loyola in 1987.

Gerard has masterfully woven the threads of excellence in the operating room, teaching, research, patient care, and mentorship to students and residents, into a strong and holistic weft of exceptional professionalism and achievement. He served as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and General Surgery at Hines, VA. At Loyola, he was the Director of the Breast Care Center, Associate Director of the Cardinal Bernadin Cancer Center, and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology. He was responsible for setting up the Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Center and the Multi-Disciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Center.

He has taught, trained and influenced thousands of medical students, residents and fellows, playing an integral role in the lives of the excellent physicians and surgeons who graduate from Loyola. In 2003, he won the Association of V.A. Surgeons Distinguished Physicians Award, and is also a recipient of the Indian American Medical Association’s Distinguished Physicians Award. He has received several teaching awards, the most recent being the Ralph P. Leischner, Jr., M.D. Master Teacher Award (in 2008), an honor bestowed by the Stritch faculty to those who exhibit excellence in teaching skills, innovations, mentoring and contributions to the school’s educational community3. He was responsible for introducing to Loyola several leading edge Surgical Oncology procedures.

In 2009, he was awarded the very prestigious and coveted Stritch Medal, Loyola’s highest honor to an Alumnus or Staff Member. Speaking to this honor and to his professional gravitas, Richard L. Gamelli, MD, FACS, dean, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine had this to say: “Dr. Aranha has been a cornerstone of this institution for more than three decades. His excellence in the operating room, teaching and patient care epitomizes the characteristics of a medal winner. He is an outstanding example to our students and residents of how a physician can provide optimal care to patients”4.

To continue to recognize and celebrate his influence and contributions to medicine and to the University, Loyola instituted in 2014 the annual Gerard V. Aranha Surgical Oncology Lectureship which will each year invite a top expert in the field to come to Loyola to share new ideas with attending physicians, residents and medical students about advances in cancer treatment. Dr. Charles J. Yeo of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – one of the best surgeons in the world performing the Whipple procedure – delivered the first lecture (New Faces of Pancreatic

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru 85 Cancer Treatment) in this series on September 9, 2015. Gerard’s influence and impact on the medical profession extend far beyond Loyola. He is a prolific researcher who has published many hundreds of research articles, letters and book chapters. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and is not only internationally known for his work in surgical oncology, but is also widely admired as a role model for all levels of learners as well as by his peers. He has presented his research findings at multiple regional, national and international conferences.

His uberous professional contributions have won him sweeping recognition from his confreres and leadership roles in a myriad of professional and scientific societies. He was the keynote speaker at the 2nd Central European Congress of Surgery in Katowice, Poland (2009). He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, the Illinois Surgical Society (President 2003-2004), Chicago Surgical Society (President 2005- 2006), Midwest Surgical Association (President 1992-1993), the Western Surgical Association (Vice- President 2010-2011), and is currently on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. He has been invited to peer review research articles for several renowned US and international medical journals.

Gerard’s research has benefited Loyola and influenced the medical profession in many ways, a few of which are:

1. A paper he co-authored in 1982 in the American Journal of Surgery5 not only went on to become Loyola’s most cited clinical paper, but also fundamentally changed the practice of gall bladder surgery and reduced mortality rates in patients with cirrhosis;

2. His variant of the Whipple procedure - a complex operation to remove part of the pancreas, bile duct, small intestine and stomach for patients with pancreatic cancer - has reduced the procedure’s mortality rate to 1.5% in his hands, compared to the prevailing rate of 5% to 8%. He successfully performed the Whipple procedure on Chicago’s Archbishop, the late Cardinal Bernardin6

3. His research in esophageal cancer, administering chemotherapy and radiation before surgery, has resulted in a better 5-year survival rate of 41% compared to the dismal prevailing rate of 19%, and reduced mortality from the procedure7; and

4. He was one of the first to propose that chemotherapy and radiation therapy be administered before surgery in locally advanced stomach cancer. This is now standard practice and has increased survival rates8

Gerard’s eclectic spheres of interests and influence envelope far more than his profession alone. He and his wife, Rosemary Aranha, reside in Oak Brook, Illinois, and celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in January. They have five children and seven grandchildren. They are active in their parish, Visitation Church in Elmhurst, and in the India Catholic Association of Chicago, where Rosemary has served as a former president. He is an active member of his community, is a life trustee of Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, and has served on school boards and in other positions of social leadership. When not involved in professional or social activities, he enjoys world history, American civil war, and travel.
