From Pastor Chris

The Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit: An Geadh-Glas, or “The Wild Goose.” The name hints at a mystery. Much like a wild goose, the Holy Spirit cannot be tracked or tamed.

An element of danger and an air of unpredictability surround the Spirt of God. “The Wild Goose” sounds a bit sacrilegious, but wholly accurate when it comes to following the Holy Spirit through life. The fact is: most of us have no idea where we are going most of the time. That uncertainty brings adventure.

Have you clipped the wings of the Wild Goose and settled for something less than God has intended?

The term “wild goose chase” refers to a directionless endeavor. But chasing the Wild Goose is a different matter altogether. While the nudging of the Wild Goose may seem pointless at times, God is constantly at work behind the scenes. If you chase the Wild Goose, you will find yourself in new and unexpected places.

Are you confused about what God wants to do with you and through you? Do you believe God is leading you to do something you never thought you would do? Remember the words of Isaiah: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts and your ways are not my ways…for as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Chase the Wild Goose and it will be anything but boring!!

Ni c e Ri de!

It is complete! Rev. Joshua Heikkila recently purchased his new vehicle!

Many thanks to all who contributed and helped to make this possible. You are now a tangible part of all his travels and his ministry.

With a safe, reliable vehicle, Josh will now be able to connect more regularly and more often with church leaders, congregations and communities, enhancing many missions, ministries and partnerships throughout Ghana.

Lake Erie Presbytery took the initiative and provided the incentive for raising funds. Over half of the $33,000 donated came from within Lake Erie Presbytery.

Your participation in securing "Wheels for Josh" is most signifi- cant and appreciated.

Sunday Fellowship

Please join us after the early or late service to reconnect with people, to welcome someone new, to be refreshed in body and spirit, to share joys and concerns. What a great time to gather together as a church family!

We have an ongoing opportunity to serve others by providing the treats that are the center of this outpouring of hospitality. It can be a celebration (birthdays, anniver- saries, baptism, wedding, graduation), theme based (seasonal, holiday, sports, arts), or a group effort (Deacons, Session, music, faith formation class, small group). You can be creative and elabo- rate or controlled and simple, homemade or store bought. The important thing is the sharing of time, talent and treasure.

If you think this calling might be for you but you are feeling a little intimidated by the logistics, we are here for you! Karen Weichman, Lorie Fritts and Sandy Herman are available to answer questions and help navigate the parlor. A notebook will be available in the parlor kitchen with helpful hints to ease first time anxiety. The fall signup sheet is located near the Grandfather clock in the parlor and an annual calendar is underneath in case you want to sign up for a special occasion in 2019.

Sunday Suppers

Have you served a meal at Sunday Supper recently? A few extra hands are usually needed on Sunday afternoons from 3:15 – 6:00 to help serve dinner to those who are food insecure in downtown Erie. You are encour- aged to look at your calendar and choose 3 or 4 Sundays during this pro- gram year to help be a blessing to others and, in addition, to meet people from other congregations and Gannon students who come to serve the meal.

October meals will be prepared and served by Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Belle Valley/Elmwood Ave- nue Presbyterian Churches, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and the Episcopal Cathedral of Saint Paul where the meal will be served at the Cathedral. Please consider offering your help at Sunday Sup- per. I guarantee you will be blessed by the experience. Learn. Pray. Do. Together!

Covenant Preschool

Another school year has begun for Covenant Preschool. You can see the kids enjoying the playground. The preschool hallways are always decorated with their colorful and fun projects. Come up and see what we are learning!

This school year, Monty Service will be reading to the preschool students on Wednesday mornings in the Parlor. Toward the end of the month, the preschool will be walking the halls in our Halloween costumes and having a school parade.

I know this is early to think about Christmas, but the preschool children will be taking Romolo Christmas candy orders very soon. They will make great stocking stuffers! Just contact the preschool if you would like to put in an order. PAGE 6 It is never too late to join preschool! If you have any questions, need an application, or would like a tour of the preschool, you can contact the Director, Lisa Hiegel at 456-4243 x102.

Neighborhood “Eerie” Fall Festival October 20

Our West Bayfront and Gannon University are preparing for the SECOND annual Eerie Fall Festival for Saturday morning, October 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Gridley Park. Through Gannon’s Service Learning de- partment, dozens of GU classes are planning various “fall-themed” crafts and recreational activities related to their studies for children and families to enjoy. Please attend! Check it out! Bring your kids, grandkids, neighbors.

Last year FPCC sponsored and staffed the horse-drawn hayrides. Church mem- bers and staff also staffed a trick-or-treat station for hundreds of costumed children who paraded around the park. YOUR help is needed on October 20! Help with the hayrides, trick-or-treat, and staffing a church information table. Want to join the fun?! Extend love and hospitality of God to neighbors?! Check out students and their professors having fun with kids?! Call or text Seph Kumer at 814.566.0287 today.

Hot dog! It’s TGIF! Fridays in October!

You have 3 chances to experience the fun of “Thank God It’s Franks” in October: Fridays October 5, 29 and 26! (Weather permitting.) Join Abby Blankenship and the Campus Ministry team as they staff a pop-up barbecue from 10 p.m. to midnight in the church’s south parking lot at Seventh & Myrtle Streets. You will engage about 75 -100 students as they walk through the neighborhood.

Students are surprised and incredulous at the offer of a free hot dog, veggie burger and/or bottled water. They love it! They linger and visit and share how clas- ses are going, what communities they are from and whatever else is on their minds. Often heard: “You guys are amazing. This is crazy. Thank you. How awesome. We love your church.”

Take a nap. Join the team for an hour or two. Be the hands and feet of the church, and of Jesus. Text or call Abby Blankenship if you can help on a Friday night this month: 724.561.4482.

Rain Didn’t Stop the Fun!

Thank you to all who helped make the indoor Block Party happen just before Labor Day. For the first time in ten years the party was forced indoors by heavy rains. The burgers and dogs were grilled under the bell tower. The kitchen was bustling. Corn hole was played in the church hallways. Children played in the Calvin Room. Woman’s Club members served desserts. And neighbors, students and church folks of all ag- es danced together to the tunes of The Breeze Band. Hundreds of neighbors experienced the hospitality and love you shared. It takes a small army and a faithful leader, Dale Sweet, to bring the Block Party to life! Thank you for your part!

Much Love GIVEn by Gannon Family

Seems everyone was very happy with the GIVE Day projects that were accomplished on a Saturday morn- ing in September.

We had 6 women from the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority (house on 6th street a block from church), 10 stu- dents from the African Student Association (whose leader is Dante our Sunday morning office host), Rick Skrbin from Covenant Preschool…And we had two Gannon Alumni/staff: Melanie Vadzemieks from Gan- non’s Advancement Office with her daughter Hannah, plus Valerie Bacik, Gannon’s VP for Planning/ Finance. Valerie is the second Gannon VP we’ve had volunteer on these days over the past 4 years.

Over 2.5 hours, mulch was spread around the landscaping by the bell tower and digital sign, daylilies around the property were cut back, potholes were patched, playground trees were trimmed and benches were stained/painted, window- and stair-wells were cleaned out…and more!

Big thanks to Covenant Preschool for purchasing all of the materials: paint, parking lot patch, mulch, etc.). Preschool Board member Rick Skrbin is an amazing Coordinator of the work teams, and has been do- ing this for the church twice a year for 4 years. Thank you, John Scepura for planning the projects and gathering tools. Ron Fabich (a Gannon alum!), Abby Blankenship and Seph Kumer represented the congre- gation and staff and worked alongside the students.

Gannon staff and students are part of a special partnership with First Covenant. The church loves stu- dents and neighbors in many ways. And the University and its students love the church back through many acts of service and volunteering. May God continue to grow this relationship!

Students from 24 African Countries Planning Celebration at Gannon

This year there are students attending Gannon from almost half of the countries in Africa! And they will be cooking in the church kitchen for a grand public celebration. A very special “Showcase of Africa” is being planned for Saturday, October 20 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Gannon’s Yehl (Alumni) Ballroom. You can experience gourmet African cook- ing, African fashion and dance from across the continent—for free!

The Kirk House is home to three of Gannon’s African students: Arnold from Uganda, Jesse from Rwanda and Mari from South Sudan. Dante Epizitone (Cameroon) is our Sun- day morning office host. He organized 10 students from 9 different African countries worked on the church grounds during Gannon’s community volunteering “GIVE” day in September. He is also the President of Gannon’s African Student Organization (ASO) planning the event. Dante says, “We’re bringing a well-known celebrity chef, fashion designer and a profes- sional dancer from Africa for this! I really hope our friends from the church will attend!”

If you’d like to help/observe the chef and students cook- ing, you are invited to stop by the church on Friday after- noon and evening, October 19. Dante says if you have ques- tions about this free celebration of all things African, stop by and visitPAGE him 9 in the office on Sunday mornings. Please RSVP for the event by texting or calling Dante at 240.491.1009.
