WHAT TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT DOES UBISOFT LIKE FOR ITS STUDIOS?

Antonia: It's a very chill environment with a laid back atmosphere. Every month we have a party, right here at the lunchroom being converted to a cafe. This room every month turns into a big play area with food. We are a very diverse company with many non-gender specific individuals in the company. We are renovating this studio for the 10th anniversary, and one feature is to create individual washrooms that are not gender-specific, so we are trying to a workplace that is creative and comfortable for all its employees. The company also likes open spaces for their design, and they are big on heritage buildings and maintaining the integrity of the building with a rustic feel, such as keeping exposed brick and open ceilings.

WHAT ARE SOME ISSUES IN THE CURRENT DESIGN THAT YOU SEE ARE NOT WORKING TODAY?

Antonia: This is why we are renovating, after ten years the furniture is really old, and it does not work, the chairs are not ergonomic, and we spend a lot of time in them. Some people have gone to the extent to buy their height-adjustable tables and brought them here to work. A lot of the Directors “the managers” have also requested their own enclosed spaces because the open concept gets really noisy, in general everyone complains about the acoustics

WHAT ARE SOME DESIGN FEATURES THAT YOU WOULD SAY ARE A MUST FOR THE FUTURE? AND WITH THE GROUND FLOOR RENOVATION HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DOES THE COMPANY PROJECT TO HAVE ONCE FINISHED?

Antonia: So currently we have around 840 employees spread out through three floors, once finished we hope to increase that number between 900 to 1000 employees. As for the design, non-gender specific areas are a must, private spaces for the directors with lots of storage, lots of graphics and privacy with acoustic control for everyone.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE COMPANY IN THIS STUDIO? WHICH DEPARTMENTS DO YOU HAVE SUCH AS SALES, MARKETING?

Antonia: Antonia: We don't have a sales or marketing department here as we are a creative studio, those departments are found in headquarters such as our Montreal studio. So our floors right now are divided into our departments, the 3rd and 4th floor are for programming and our second floor where we are is for the support departments such as IT, HR, Communications, Operations and Maintenance. We don't really have executives in this studio either; we have what we call directors who would be like managers, there is a director for each department. The directors for the programmers are divided by the project; then, there is the studio director that oversees the studio. In the end, all the directors have to be in constant communication and connection with the executives at headquarters and directors in other studios. Collaboration is critical for our company. STUDIO WALKTHROUGH Ubisoft's Toronto studio is a dynamic yet rigid place of work, where it hard so to identify where the play begins. The studio, aside from the large murals designed by their creative team at first glance, seems all work and no play. The screens may tell you otherwise, as gaming graphics is the focus, the play and creativity in the interior design of the studio seem to be all absent throughout the layout.

The studio walkthrough consisted of the second floor where the support team is situated and the ground floor is but a blank canvas for new upcoming renovations. However, with just seeing the second floor, there was much to be wished for with a lack of design for a gaming company. The industrial atmosphere made apparent in the interior was showcased by exposed brick walls and open ceilings, industrial lighting fixtures, exposed wooden beams and hard surfaces with glossy wood floors. The lack of colour in the interiors walls made for a bland workplace relying on art pieces and potted plants for the pops of colours. Colours in muraled walls were kept for two mayor corridors throughout the floor. Breakaway areas were empty with no furniture that was removed due to lack of use; in other places, awkward positioning of these breakaway areas keeps them from being used because of lack of privacy.

R 8 MIDTERM TheMatrix FINDING THE CONTEXT Before beginning to developing the preliminary space planning, an overview of the programming requirements is essential to an effective plan. For Ubisoft, the programming was not wholly reflective of the companies structure; therefore, the programming required some adjusting. The requirements were re-organized to reflect the structure while maintaining the individual position furniture requirements. Due to the company structure, some adjacencies were different from the traditional prototypical layouts, as well as applying some modern workplace philosophies that were reflective of the industries.
