All the clubs, committees, societies and departments of the college organized lectures, workshops, seminars conferences and other awareness programmes to acquaint the students and faculty with the latest developments in their subjects, specifically, and in the world around them, generally. • ‘Shubhagman’ Talent-hunt programme was organized by Youth Welfare Department to spot fresh talent and to groom it further. Department of Computer Science and Applications. • Art Workshop- cum-Exhibition ‘Jag Salona’ organized by P.G. Department of Fine Arts. • Art Beat-The Annual Painting Exhibition organized by P.G. Department of Fine Arts. 3. Preservation and promotion of ancient Indian culture. Celebration of all important festivals and birth and death anniversary of great men and women. 4. Infrastructural enrichment: • Updation and expansion of existing infrastructure. 5. Instilling qualities of leadership and sense of responsibility in the students by involving them in decision making and implementation of college rules and regulations in many ways. 6. Facilitating research by providing ample opportunities and incentives to the staff to undertake research work 7. Organizing outreach activities to make the youth socially responsive and responsible. 8. Holding counselling sessions, personality development programmes and placement camps to groom the students for job market. 9. The new miracle seeds produced far bigger yields, but they came with a catch: The thirsty crops needed much more water than natural rainfall could provide, so the farmers had to dig wells and irrigate with groundwater. The demand for more grains, saw the farmers pumping excessive groundwater to irrigate their crops resulting in a dramatic fall in the water table. The level began to drop more than 3 feet every year. Deeper water table meant high powered tubewells sucking out whatever was left deep down in the earth. The cost went up, the soil also started show - ing damage because of the chemicals. This is where the money lenders came into the picture. Excessive spending on agriculture because of low water table, bad soil and low MSP added to the woes. The mounting debts have taken their toll in farm suicides.

Proof of it is the provision of “imprisonment of not less than three years and fine” for any purchase of produce at below the official Minimum Support Price (MSP). Farmers across the country are no doubt restive today. The fact that MSP doesn’t even find a mention in the laws enacted recently by the Cen - tre has fueled mistrustamong the farmers who fear that the time-tested regime is on its way out. Though the Union Government has been in - sisting that this system would continue, the farming community in Pun - jab and other states remain unconvinced. The Bills passed by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha seek to amend the Central legislation to ensure that wheat and paddy – the staple crops grown in the grain-surplus state – are not bought for not less than the respective MSP.Guaranteed MSP is certainly music to the toiling farmers’ ears. With the Central agencies procuring crops at best at the fixed MSP, some states have been offering a bonus – over and above the support price – to compensate the farmers. But the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) has cautioned that such moves create distortions in the market and affect the “balance of crops”. Let us agree, that the sparring over the terms of reference of the Fif - teenth Finance Commission (with southern states worried about the al - location if new population figures are taken into account), the controversies around the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime (with states unhappy with the Centre for failing to meet its commitments on compensation payments): and now Punjab’s decision to bring its own leg - islative framework on the farm bills all point to a new trend.
