2002 association of alternative newsweeklies alternative newspaper cartoon contest 2002 general rules • All cartoons that were regularly published in an AAN paper during calendar year 2001 are eligible. (For a list of AAN papers, see the back of this form.) • Only stand-alone cartoons — not illustrations accompanying an article — are eligible. • Publication period for all cartoons that are submitted as part of an entry is January 1, 2001, through December 31, 2001. • There will be two separate divisions — one for cartoons that were published in less than five AAN papers, and another for cartoons that were published in five or more AAN papers. Winning entries will be selected in each division. • All entries become property of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Entries will not be returned. • AAN reserves the right to republish winning entries in part or in whole to promote the contest. • Winning entries will be announced at the 25th annual AAN convention in Madison, Wis. May 30-June 1. entry preparation • Each entry must include ten (10) single-panel and/or multi-panel strips by the same cartoonist(s). (If more than ten strips are submitted, contest administrators will arbitrarily select the cartoons that must be eliminated to reduce the number to ten.) • Four (4) copies must be submitted for each of the ten cartoons comprising the entry. Original tearsheets, photocopies or print outs are all acceptable. (Photocopies or printouts must be b/w unless the cartoons were originally published in color.) • If a paper name and publication date are not plainly visible on any of the cartoons, entries must be signed (in the appropriate space below) and submitted by a representative of one of the papers that published the strip. 20 • A completed entry form (see below and back of form) and a $25 check covering the entry fee must be included with the entry. • If an insufficient number of copies are submitted, the entry will automatically be disqualified.
