NOV 2017 ® ENGINEERED FOR MEN WHO FLY THEIR DREAMS.

Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Le Petit Prince”. Ref. 5009: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” These words have assumed a meaning beyond their literal sense. And when Antoine de Saint- Exupéry put them into the mouth of his little prince, he probably knew already that we need only turn our hearts to the stars in all their brilliance to recognize our dreams. Making them come true, however, calls for men with the courage of a Saint-Exupéry. By becoming a professional pilot, he not only fulfilled a boyhood dream but was also inspired by flying to write his literary masterpiece and international bestseller, “The Little Prince”. Reason enough for IWC to honour his life’s work with the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Le Petit Prince”. The watch has a chapter ring recalling the elegantly reduced design of the cockpit instrumentation in classic aircraft. An image of the little prince, whose imagination, sincerity and openness took people’s hearts by storm, is taken up as an engraving on the back of the case. In the same way that Saint-Exupéry – pilot, poet, and pioneer – gifted the world a story that tells of human strength and goodness, IWC gives us this watch as a reminder to live out our dreams. IWC. ENGINEERED FOR MEN.

18 NYCMONTHLY.COM For Events beyond the Top Ten visit nycmonthly.com Written by Leah Blewett Thankful TO BE IN NYC Giving Back and Also Taking In All Our City Offers e’re always thankful to be in NYC, but never moreso than at this time of year, Wwhen the city is at its most welcoming. As autumn leaves give way to the season’s first snow, we have so many great activities, indoors and out, to remind us why living here is such a privilege. Below, four of our favorite Thanksgiving-time ways to say “thank you” to New York: Volunteer: Feeding NYC t’s hard to imagine that, in the greatest city in the world, so many of our neighbors struggle with Ihunger. But New York’s approach to the problem is comprehensive, ranging from city-sponsored outreach programs to private groups and non-profits. One such outreach effort is Feeding NYC, which hand-delivers complete Thanksgiving meals to families in need. On November 21st, the group will build on last year’s success, when they delivered nearly 35,000 meals, and volunteers and financial contributions are always gratefully accepted. As we take in the magic of the holiday season, giving to those who have less makes each moment even more meaningful.

Honor: The Veterans Day Parade very year since 1929, New Yorkers have come Etogether on Veterans Day to commemorate those who gave their lives for our country – and our city. This year, on November 11th, the tradition continues, with thousands of New Yorkers gathered to show appreciation and respect for those who have and who continue to serve. A moving wreath-laying ceremony at the site of the Eternal Flame in Madison Square Park kicks off the march at 10 a.m., with speakers, performers, a rifle salute, and the playing of Taps. Marvel: Canstruction at The march then heads north up as a Brookfield Place sea of active duty and retired service members, plus rom November 2nd until the 15th, the city’s premier colorful marching bands and other performers, honor shopping and arts destination, Brookfield Place, is the service of all branches of the U.S. military. F home to Canstruction, an extraordinary annual design competition that is now in its 25th year. Competitors include teams of architects, engineers, and contractors tasked with building sculptures entirely out of unopened cans of food; the large-scale sculptures are displayed at Brookfield Place, and after judging, are donated in their entirety to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Past pieces have ranged in scope from geometric shapes to ultra-realistic depictions of everyday objects such as apple cores to clouds pouring rain to a representation of Rodin’s famed “The Thinker.” Prompting endless “nice cans” jokes, but for a worthy cause.

Celebrate: Four-Course Fall Harvest Feast at Eataly ure, nothing really beats Mom’s Thanksgiving feast at home. But that doesn’t stop our city’s bevy Sof talented chefs from trying! One such effort stands out from the rest: the fresh Chef’s Table Feast at Eataly (11/4), prepared before your eyes with the freshest local ingredients transformed into traditional Italian fare. We love the communal table, which feels like a friendly family meal (if your last name happens to be Batali) and each of the four courses is Italian in provenance but chosen to reflect the best produce, meat, fish, and other ingredients available in our region at this time of year. It’s a friendly seasonal celebration that nicely sets up the rest of the month – and sets the mood for giving thanks here in our beautiful city. Written by Leah Blewett COCKTAILS

But one thing’s for certain throughout: this is a place for true whiskey lovers who can lockers to store their unfinished bottles or come with a group of friends to order barrel-aged cocktails in bulk (hence the aforementioned barrel service). So, in honor of a decade well spent, Bobo recently shut its doors in order to undergo a renovation, ensuring that it continues to age as gracefully as it has so far. Set in a West Village townhouse, Bobo has always been loved for giving its guests the feeling of dining in the home of a Parisian living in New York—heavily curtained windows looking out onto the streets, antique bric-à-brac and volumes on bookshelves, creaky old stairs leading up from the dim lounge to the dining rooms. ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT RON BAKER A Kid from Kansas Turned New York Knickerbocker

he Knicks’ season started last month after a Troster shakeup in late September that saw them losing two big names from the starting lineup. Instead of succumbing to being deemed hopeless, it led the franchise to embrace an optimistic outlook on what this year can hold for them. Young players have the chance to embrace coach Jeff Hornacek’s philosophy of capitalizing on players’ individual strengths rather than playing a formulaic offense strategy. Among these athletes with many opportunities ahead: sophomore point/shooting guard Ron Baker. Baker, from Hays, Kansas, played his college years at Wichita State after he walked on as a redshirted freshman. His senior year he averaged 14 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, but it wasn’t enough to get him drafted into the NBA. He joined the Knicks’ 2016 summer league team and, after success there, was signed to the opening night roster last fall. In his rookie season, he scored a career high of 13 points and showed a lot of potential, leading the Knicks to re-sign him to a new two-year deal. With a resurgent energy to them, the are staying positive that this season’s youthful squad will unite to be a team worth taking notice of. nspired by the hit Jack Black film of the same name, the Ienergetic new musical School of Rock marks another opportunity for a night out at the theatre that the entire family can enjoy. The high-octane musical features an electrical score including hits from the movie as well as new music from theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber whose rock savvy can be heard in classics such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and The Phantom of the Opera. What makes this musical particularly special is that the music is performed by an ensemble of multitalented pre-teens and young adults – the same child actors who play students at the eponymous “school.” School of Rock opened at the Winter (the original home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running hit Cats) and was nominated for 2016 Tony Awards for Best New Musical and Best Original Score. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes also received a Best Book of a Musical nomination for his sidesplitting, witty, and heartfelt adaptation of the film.
