hile half of New Hampshire was in a state of emergency without power, a few brave skiers and snow shralpers gave mother nature the finger and made their way to Whaleback and Steez Magazine’s Up the Ante to throw down some sweet preseason moves. The last time I made the trek to Whaleback it was a similar preseason event right after they built their new hubba. My fresh gear got thrashed with mud, there were a million kids, and snow was a scarce commodity. This time around it was a whole different story. With the completed Hubba set up, a 25-foot booter, an up down box line, and a snow making pipe that reached for the sky, the stage was set for the competitors to battle for the cash prize and claims to fame for the day. The advanced division was where it was at. The format was 20 minutes per division jam style. Most versatile and consistent skiers and riders would walk away with tons of swag and high fives all around. Wide-eyed and in need of a change of underwear, Chase Brooks took first for the skiers, stomping a super smooth backflip and laying claim to being the only one to conquer the vertical snowmaking pipe. On the snowboard side it was the battle of brothers for first, with Jason Melanson barely edging out his brother Justin. It was so close we almost had them brawl at the award ceremony to decide the winner. For a preseason event, Whaleback really had their act together and I left impressed. It was a great event with awesome people making things happen. A few side notes from the trip: If you take a number “2” in the farthest stall from the door you’ll find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation. The left lane is for PASSING only. If you mix half coffee, half hot chocolate, milk and sugar, you have the best drink on the planet, the Dunkachino. Lastly, British dance beats are definitely a bit strange...seriously. 6

INTERVIEW

Photo: Rami Hanafi I heard you grew up in New Hampshire, where do you Interviewed by: Katie Davis live now? I still live in NH, well based out of there at least.

When you ride out west, do you couch surf or do you have your own place? All I used to do was couch surf, for like four years. I stepped it up a bit and I usually have a spot nowadays.

Sponsors? Flow, Billabong, Smith, Grenade, and Neff.

“We’re all knuckle draggers”

Do you feel a lot of pressure to please your sposors? Not really, if anything I put the pressure on myself.

Favorite places to ride? Jackson Hole, Mammoth, and of course good ole Loon and Waterville.

What’s one trick that you just can’t do? Theres a lot, but one is a cab 10 in the pipe.

What do you do when your not snowboaring or on the hill? Im down for pretty much everything, chill, party, hunt, fish, surf when I can for sure.

Being a pro athlete, many of them have super- stitions. Do you have special routines you do before or after a comp? Not really, just go out and do it.

Who’s your favorite person to ride with? Ma- son Aguirre and Kevin Pearce, they love to have fun and mess around on the shred stick.

Anyone you’d really like to film with in the 13 future? I would like to film with Travis again, but I’m going to be doing the whole contest scene this year, so its going to be tough. 15

One place you haven’t been to but would like to go and why? Tibet, its peacefull and full of pow I think.

Whats on your ipod? Pretty much a grip of every- thing from hip hop, to rock and roll

Do you wash your socks or get new ones for free? I wash them and I get new ones, you can never go wrong with free socks.

Funniest thing you’ve seen or heard in the past 24 hours? One of my friends gave himself a home drug test and failed, so now he can’t do well in a contest, because they drug test. He had to pur- posely fall on his runs.

Most people look at UNH as a Greek dominat- ed, overpriced, party school. What you don’t see from the outside is the snow scene. It’s not all frat boys and chad rock. UNH holds some sick industry events. Get Out of Bed and Shred is one of the largest4 industry events on a college campus in New England. Tons of companies, shops, teams and clubs all show up for it. There are also rail jams and multiple movie premiers held on and off campus. There may be a lot of popped collars but there’s also a retarded amount of beezys and shred kids at UNH, and that’s why they took numero cuatro.

On a cold, wet, rainy and windy af- ternoon at Loon Mountain it appeared as though the best riders would stay at home. Fortunately that was not the case. Shredders put on a show for everyone. This season Killington Resort was given the honor of being host to one of the most epic and ingenious parks of it’s time. The Stash by Burton was recently opened at Killington Resort and Steez Magazine had the opportunity to be there before the general public got their jib-sticks on it. One of only five parks of it’s kind in the world, The Stash is truly unique. Comprising solely of natural wooden features and playing off the mountains current terrain, The Stash is loaded with hidden elements. Everything from carved wooden gorillas to a full-scale wood cabin with a deck and railing. You’ll find just about everything you can think of “stashed” away in the woods beside the trails as you make your descent. It’s amazing what you can do with trees. Who needs that manmade plastic or steel? This park will give you a new appreciation for both park riding and the outdoors. Don’t worry either, with so many secret features throughout the park, you’ll never get bored. Hell, half the fun is just searching for new hits every run. A one of a kind, and worth the trip. -A

The elements were no match however, for the die-hard local skiers and shredders that came out. Over 50 competitors donned their spandex bibs and schlepped to the top

Who dares to compete with the megalith snow- board companies of today, especially right here in Burtons backyard? Why it’s Bean Snowboards from 27 Boston of course!

We recently had the opportunity to take Beans true twin park board out to the mountain for a test drive. “The Violator” is the real deal. Made with a Popple Combo Core, Carbon Steel edges, a Sin- tered base and TriaxGlass, this board shows all the common features you’d find in the boards down to the local Board Shack.

We found The Violator to be a pretty damn solid board, taking on 10 to 15-foot drops with ease. Mount Snow Hey, what goods a board review if you don’t ride the damn thing!? The Violator is one of the widest at jib boards in its class and Bean wasn’t lying about it being super buttery either.
