Competitive Pricing Words: Tom Ryan Photo: Stu Lander hile half of New Hampshire was in a state of emergency without power, a few brave skiers and snow shralpers gave mother nature the finger and made their way to Whaleback and Steez Magazine’s Up the Ante to throw down some sweet preseason moves. The last time I made the trek to Whaleback it was a similar preseason event right after they built their new hubba. My fresh gear got thrashed with mud, there were a million kids, and snow was a scarce commodity. This time around it was a whole different story. With the completed Hubba set up, a 25-foot booter, an up down box line, and a snow making pipe that reached for the sky, the stage was set for the competitors to battle for the cash prize and claims to fame for the day. The advanced division was where it was at. The format was 20 minutes per division jam style. Most versatile and consistent skiers and riders would walk away with tons of swag and high fives all around. Wide-eyed and in need of a change of underwear, Chase Brooks took first for the skiers, stomping a super smooth backflip and laying claim to being the only one to conquer the vertical snowmaking pipe. On the snowboard side it was the battle of brothers for first, with Jason Melanson barely edging out his brother Justin. It was so close we almost had them brawl at the award ceremony to decide the winner. For a preseason event, Whaleback really had their act together and I left impressed. It was a great event with awesome people making things happen. A few side notes from the trip: If you take a number “2” in the farthest stall from the door you’ll find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation. The left lane is for PASSING only. If you mix half coffee, half hot chocolate, milk and sugar, you have the best drink on the planet, the Dunkachino. Lastly, British dance beats are definitely a bit strange...seriously. 6 Home Mountain: Sunday River, ME Living: West Jamaica, CO Sponsors: K2, Level Gloves, Scott USA, Bern, Meathead Films 1. www.influencefilmclub.com The Crash Reel Discussion Guide Director: Lucy Walker Year: 2013 Time: 108 min You might know this director from: Devil’s Playground (2002) Blindsight (2006) Countdown to Zero (2010) Waste Land (2010) The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom (2011) FILM SUMMARY THE CRASH REEL tracks the exhilarating and inspiring journey of U.S. champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce, whose fast-hurtling career is halted by a near fatal crash that leaves him with a traumatic brain injury. With the help of loving family and friends, he slowly recovers, determined to return to competitive snowboarding. However, Kevin’s doctors warn him that even a small blow to the head could kill him. His family tries to convince him that the danger is too great, but for Kevin Pearce, snowboarding is more than just a passion and profession—it’s his identity. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker seamlessly weaves together newly-shot footage of candid interviews and intimate verité scenes with archival footage from over 230 sources. Spanning 20 years, the film includes breathtaking action shots and personal videos from family and friends. The result is a powerful story that explores obsessive passion, the bonds of family, friendship and rivalry among athletes, and a culture of extreme sports that pushes its stars to take dangerous risks. THE CRASH REEL follows Kevin as he goes beyond physical recovery to true healing. After accepting his situation, he uses his experiences to help and inspire others. What emerges is a portrait of an unforgettable family and the powerful love that binds them together as Kevin gains the strength to set a new course for himself, one that continues to unfold long after the film ends.

Timeline of Vermont Skiing New England Ski Museum In preparation for 2014 Annual Exhibit Ca. 1853: “At some time in his middle years he (Joseph Seavey Hall) built a trail up Burke Mountain, near East Burke, Vermont, and later enlarged it into a bridle path. He claimed that it was he who transformed the Crawford Path from a blazed and cairned trial into a bridle path. He built the first summit house that was anything more than an emergency shelter. He completed the Carriage Road from just above the Halfway House to the summit…In his early forties he marched through Pennsylvania with the 11 th regiment, Vermont Volunteers, and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. …After the Civil War he went west, mined silver in Nevada, and then moved on to California, where, according to family tradition, he once more indulged his passion for building roads up mountains and houses on mountains by constructing another carriage road, this one up Mt. Diablo.” Bradford F. Swan, “Joseph Seavey Hall, White Mountain Guide,” Appalachia, Magazine number 130 (June 15, 1960), 57-58. 1860: “Mountain recreation at Burke dates back to 1860 when Lt. Joseph Seaver (sic) Hall of East Burke cut a trail to the mountain’s summit and erected a cabin there. Picnickers and hikers used the trail to climb to the mountaintop which was a popular pastime in Vermont in the late 1880s.” Karen D. Lorentz, The Great Vermont Ski Chase . (Shrewsbury, Vermont: Mountain Publishing, Inc., 2005), 54 1892: “Winter sport was organized on a permanent commercial basis under the direction of the Woodstock Inn as early as 1892, when the inn opened its doors for the first time.
