MOORE DIED, a grand old man, in 1958. At the time of his death he was respected as an exponent of common-sense philosophy and a precursor of ordinary-language philosophy, which was then fashionable. To admit, as Moore admitted (in Schilpp, p. 14), that philosophical problems were not suggested to him by the world, but only by what philosophers had said about the world, wa~ taken to indicate, not a certain narrowness of vision, but a deep wisdom­ the sign of a man who knows which part of the apple's got the worm. In these respects Moore seemed in the 1950'S a much more modern figure than Russell, whose view that philosophy should aim at a reform of the fabric of knowledge was dismissed as nineteenth-century megalomania. With the subsequent evap­ oration of ordinary-language philosophy, Moore's reputation has suffered a decline. It is only recently that he has come to be seen in historical perspective, and what now seems of most importance is his early work. What he wrote after about 1903, when Principia E thica and "The Refutation ofIdealism" appeared, seems, with one or two exceptions, ofmuch less interest. Like almost everyone else, Russell thought Moore's Ethics (1912) "very poor",2 but he also thought that even Principia Ethica was "nothing like so good" as "The Nature ofJudg­ ment", in which Moore firmly parted company with neo-Hegelianism and Moore and Bloomsbury began the development of analytic philosophy.3 There is something to be said for Russell's judgment (much of it revealed, however unwillingly, by Begum's by Nicholas Griffin book).

    SPIRITED WOMEN TELL THEIR STORIES: A STUDY OF BANGLADESHI FEMALE TEMPORARY MIGRATION TO THE MIDDLE EAST ABHAR RUKH HUSAIN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GENDER, FEMINIST & WOMEN’S STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA NOVEMBER, 2015 © Abhar Rukh Husain, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation draws on the stories of 34 Bangladeshi women who went to seven Middle Eastern countries, including United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon and Jordan, as temporary workers during 1995-2010. I interrogate their interactions with migration brokers and employers and offer a complex understanding of their migration journey. My understanding adds to the structural aspect of their migration journey by highlighting the social context of rural Bangladesh from where these women migrate. I argue a nuanced view of these women’s engagement with migration brokers from their social and familial circles and their conduct with their employers in Middle East requires a critical consideration of Bangladeshi rural realities. Understanding their behaviour in terms of their rural origins leads to feminist insights into power attentive to social context. By linking a macro- structural lens of power to a feminist meso lens of power in this dissertation, I comprehend their situation with brokers and employers in a nuanced manner and complicate dominant ways of understanding their migration journey. My approach bridges a feminist critical understanding of power relations and a macro-structural understanding of power relations between women and other institutional actors, including migration brokers and employers in women’s migration journey.

Shamima Parvin Lasker, Professor of Anatomy, City Dental College, Dhaka, Bangladesh Email: [email protected] Bioethics is the understanding of rights, responsibilities, justices and moral interaction in living beings. It includes medical ethics, environmental ethics, legal ethics, business ethics and ethics in human rights & politics. Since its inception in 1970, the field has grown exponentially in its scope and importance. Many hospitals now employing bioethics experts to guide on such issues as allocation of scarce resources, how to care for terminally ill patients and dilemmas of doctors facing everyday for advancement of new technology. There are at over 95% of U.S. hospitals has ethics committees for helping physicians, nurses and families on bioethical issues on a case-by-case basis at present. Thus today bioethics is not only a reasoned discourse but a matter of crisis management. Bangladesh is a pluralistic society with a wonderful diversity of values and ethical ideals. But poverty, natural calamities, lack of proper and substantial education and rapidly advancing technology people are forced to deal with one crisis after another. In a result bio-ethical decision, sanctity of life is deemed to be less important than the quality of life. Corruption, nepotism, selfishness, misconduct and malpractice are becoming the common phenomena in Bangladesh. It gives the impression that we don't able to tell which values need to be employed when and which ethical dilemmas need our most immediate attention in our society.
