MORADI, N. SAMADAEI Gastrointestinal Cancer Research Center, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran Abstract – Objective: Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide. The first step in planning to in- crease the survival rate of cancer patients is to know the cause of death of these patients. This study aimed to investigate the causes of death in cancer patients hospitalized in Imam Khomeini hospital of Sari, Iran (a referral hospital in northern Iran). Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting data on the caus- es of death in cancer patients who were hospitalized and passed away in Imam Khomeini hospital between 2013 and 2016 with a clinical diagnosis of cancer by an oncologist and confirmation of a pathologist. Data were collected using a questionnaire and were then analyzed by SPSS 21. Results: The most prevalent cancers were gastric, lung, breast and colon cancers and the most frequent causes of death among patients were sepsis (45.3%), carcinomatosis (16.4%), IHD (10.8%), internal bleeding (9.6%), other infections (6%) and pneumonia (3.8%). Conclusions: Infection is the most important cause of cancer deaths, while the importance of sepsis cannot be neglected. Bleeding, carcinomatosis and cardiovascular problems are also of par- ticular importance in the deaths of cancer patients. Most of cancers were related to the digestive tract, blood, and respiratory tract. A majority of these patients died from curable causes, including infection and bleeding, meaning that a large proportion of the deaths can be avoided by taking technical clinical precautions. -

In recent reviews however, the incidence is rising among the Caucasians and black Americans. We set out to determine the incidence in South- Western Nigeria and to examine the histopathologic variants. Methods: A retrospective study of patients who had histopathologically confirmed testicular and para-testicular tumours between 1989 and 2005 (17 years). Their records were documented at the Ife-Ijesha cancer registry which serves 4.7 million men residing in three states of South-Western Nigeria. Results: There were 26 cases of testicular and para-testicular tumors with an average incidence of 1.5 cases per year. The incidence of testicular cancer in our study was 0.55 per 100,000 population (95% CI, 0.52- 0.57) and accounted for 1.1% of all male cancers. Rhabdomyosarcomas were the most common variety (70% of the paratesticular tumors and 26.8% of all tumors of the testis). Seminomas comprised 50% of the germ cell tumors and 15.4% of all testicular tumors in this series. Conclusion: There still remains a low incidence of testis cancer in the South Western Nigeria. The reduction in the incidence of seminomas makes rhabdomyosarcomas the most predominant tumor in South Western Nigeria. -

REVIEW CURRENT OPINION Evolving epidemiology of HIV-associated malignancies Meredith S. Shiels and Eric A. Engels Purpose of review The purpose of this review is to describe the epidemiology of cancers that occur at an elevated rate among people with HIV infection in the current treatment era, including discussion of the cause of these cancers, as well as changes in cancer incidence and burden over time. Recent findings Rates of Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and cervical cancer have declined sharply in developed countries during the highly active antiretroviral therapy era, but remain elevated 800-fold, 10-fold and four- fold, respectively, compared with the general population. Most studies have reported significant increases in liver cancer rates and decreases in lung cancer over time. Although some studies have reported significant increases in anal cancer rates and declines in Hodgkin lymphoma rates, others have shown stable incidence. Declining mortality among HIV-infected individuals has resulted in the growth and aging of the HIV-infected population, causing an increase in the number of non-AIDS-defining cancers diagnosed each year in HIV-infected people. Summary The epidemiology of cancer among HIV-infected people has evolved since the beginning of the HIV epidemic with particularly marked changes since the introduction of modern treatment. Public health interventions aimed at prevention and early detection of cancer among HIV-infected people are needed. In a rare opportunity, the general public had the chance to hear the unfiltered voices of the men and women whose daily work involves the use of animal models in medical research. The series was titled “For the Greater Good.” Each featured article portrays one author’s personal stories of people and animals whose lives have been improved or saved by medical breakthroughs made possible by animal research. We will remember these stories; they could be about our own families, friends and well-loved pets. They are stories about hope and triumph, obstacles and realities. With the publication of this booklet, members of the media, policy makers, researchers and their staffs, doctors, veterinarians, patients, neighbors, teachers and students across the country will have the chance to read these words. Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control T32 Training Grant The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is the recipient of a T32 National Research Service Award Institutional Research Grant in Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control from the National Cancer Institute (aka training grant). The training grant provides funds for training at the pre- and post- doctoral levels in 3 tracks: the etiology and prevention of cancer, the genetic epidemiology of cancer, and cancer control. At the pre-doc level, training involves pursuit of a doctorate and dissertation research; funding is usually for up to three years, which includes tuition, stipend, and individual health insurance. At the post- doctoral level, training involves research in a mentored environment; funding usually is for two years, which includes stipend and individual health insurance. At any one time, 6 doctoral students and 3 post-doctoral fellows are funded by the training grant. Slots are available only periodically and appointments typically are not aligned with the start of the academic year. Selection by the training grant Steering Committee for a slot on the training grant is highly competitive. To be eligible for support on the training grant, you must be: 1) A US citizen or Permanent Resident; 2) Committed to training and pursuing a career in the etiology and prevention of cancer, the genetic epidemiology of cancer, or cancer control; and 3) Accepted to/enrolled in a doctoral program (PhD, ScD, or DrPH) in the Department of Epidemiology or in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (pre-docs) or have received a doctorate in epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, or other areas appropriate for conducting research in the etiology and prevention of cancer, the genetic epidemiology of cancer, and cancer control (post-docs). -

The Mixed germ cell tumor; testicular tumors constitute 4th most common cause of death from neoplasm in a younger male.The Non-Hodgkin lymphoma; present study is undertaken to analyze the pattern and age wise distribution of testicular lesions in our Seminoma; hospital. Testicular tumors Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study done over a period of 4 years from November 2012 to October 2016, after taking approval of the ethics committee and informed consent from the patients. Histopathological slides were retrieved and reviewed for tumor and its subtype. Results: A total of 60 cases of testicular lesions were encountered in our study. Out of the total 60 cases,15% (9/60) were diagnosed as malignant testicular tumor. Most of these tumors were seen between 3rd and 4th decades. Germ cell tumor was the most common type (77.7%) among which seminomas (44.44%) and mixed germ cell tumors (28.57%) were most frequently encountered. -
