2 Welcome to the 46th Season of Music at Leamington Hastings Dear Music Lover,

In 2016 we heard varied programjme of music from the 12th century up to the modern day, 2 very contrasting piano recitals, and the first visit of the extremely distinguished Chilingirian string quartet. The Christmas concert, with a distinctive mediaeval flavour, was a fascinating diversion from our normal repertoire, and I must say I was a little nervous about how it would be received. You would be mistaken to think I choose progtammes that invariably reflected my own tastes, and this was a case in point. However, the players were delighted with the audience’s reaction and it proved to be a refreshing change. We return to the usual choir this year, when we welcome back Schola Cantorum of Oxford.

In 2017, we have an extra concert in August. This is somewhat of an experiment to “test the market”, and I shall be interested to see how it goes. The August concert will give us the chance to hear the somewhat unusual combination of a 4-handed piano duo. I can’t remember us having one in the past, but my recollections don’t go back as far as some of yours. In any event, we can look forward to an entertaining summer evening.

We begin the year, however, with a solo recital by the acclaimed English pianist, and previous visitor to our stage, Leon McCawley. I heard him give a wonderful concert last year at the Wigmore Hall, and he is delighted to come and play here again. Unfortunately, the Menuhin School have a crowded schedule this year, and are in a complex period of change with a change of both Headmaster and Director of Music. So, they cannot fit us in. However we have a worthy replacement in our schedule, the chamber players of the renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. They are playing a really superb programme, including what some consider to be Mozart’s finest chamber work, the G minor quintet. In October, we have a soprano and a small string orchestra, led by Adam Summerhayes who formed this ensemble after the dissolution of the London Concertante, who were popular favorites with us for many years. We complete our line-up of artists with the return of 4 Girls 4 Harps and the prize-winning duo of Alexander Sitkovetsky and his wife Wu Qian, both Menuhin school alumni.

Finally, when we listen to the Mozart G-minor quintet, we might remember Peter Ogilvie who died suddenly last year after so many years of generous support to the concerts, and whose favourite compose Mozart was.

Kind Regards, David Potts

Leon McCawley

Piano

We are happy to welcome back Leon McCawley, one of Britain’s foremost pianists, who has forged a highly successful career since winning 1st Prize in the 1993 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and 2nd Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, building on his earlier success as Winner of the Piano Section of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1990. Since then, McCawley’s international appearances and impressive discography has established him as a pianist of great integrity and variety, bringing freshness and vitality to classical, romantic and 20th century repertoire.

His 2015 CD of Rachmaninov’s Complete Preludes for Somm Recordings is .... ’a distinguished issue’ (Gramophone May 2015)

’Leon McCawley is a real poet of the keyboard in these performances that are alive toRachmaninov’s wonderful melodic invention’ (The Classical Reviewer March 2015). PROGRAMME

Alexander Sitkovetsky Violin Wu Qian piano

1st prize winners of the prestigious Trio di Trieste Duo Competition 2011 in Italy, Alexander Sitkovetsky and Wu Qian have been performing together for over 10 years. They have given concerts as a duo in various venues in Germany, Italy, Estonia, at the Wigmore Hall in London, other venues in the UK and also in New York. Recent concerts include tours in Italy and Germany, performing both recitals and double concertos, as well as their Carnegie Hall Debut at Weill Hall.

This is their second visit to us as a duo, they have also given us a memorable concert as part of the Sitkovetsky piano trio..Both are alumni of the Menuhin school.

“Sitkovetsky and Qian maintained an agile, sympathetic dialogue and carved a great deal of open space in the music. Even short silences in the music drew in the listener.” Sitkovetsky Duo at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Centre, New York, George Grella, New York Classical Review, July 2105

Camerata RCO

( MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL CONCERTGEBOUW ORCHESTRA)

String quinTET Cello, viola(2), violin(2)

The Royal Concetgebouw Orchestra is without doubt one of the world’s greatest orchestras. (Annual votes by critics usually place it No.1 or No.2 , with its close rivals the Berlin Philharmonic ocasionally getting the first spot). However not sitting on their laurels, the players also come together to play chamber music. As they themselves put it, “Camerata RCO is a unique ensemble. We are all members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestrain Amsterdam and we enjoy playing in the orchestra tremendously. However, we like to expand this joy by playing together in a small ensemble as well. Not only is the repertoire of a small ensemble different, we also feel that chamber music is more personal and intimate. It is refreshing to get to know our colleagues in the orchestra better while working together in Camerata RCO. We are completely free to choose the repertoire we play, where we play it and with whom. With Camerata RCO we like to be in close contact with our audience. The energy that results from these concerts is what inspires us most” In this concert they play as a “Viola Quintet”, that is a string quartet plus an extra viola. They are playing three oustanding examples of the quintet repertoire..

B!Z’ART Piano Duo

André Roe • Geoffrey Baptiste

While pianists often get together from time to time to play duets, those who dedicate themselves to this are somewhat rare. Nowadays the Labeque sisters are the most well- known and I can just remember the married couple Cyril Smith and Phyllis Sellick. Duets can be 2 hands on 2 pianos or 4 hands on one, and this is the configuration we shall hear in this concert.

All of the pieces were originally written for 4 hands by the composers, with the exception of the suite from West Side Story, which was arranged for duet by Bernstein himself, and the Hungarian Dances, which have been arranged for a great many combinations of instruments.

4 GIRLS 4 HARPS (Harp Quartet)

This popular ensemble love coming to Leamington Hastings, and we are please to welcome them back once again.

Since their formation in 2000, 4 Girls 4 Harps have been heard in numerous venues and festivals in the UK and across Europe, delighting audiences with their dynamic performances and innovative repertoire. The quartet has featured on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night, BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Classic FM, and Welsh television channel, S4C. They have performed at The World Harp Congress in Dublin, The Fairfield Halls, St George’s, Bristol, ChampsHill, and at London’s King’s Place.

PROGRAMME

“Our concert will include music by Piazzola, Prokofiev, Shostakovich and our 15th Anniversary commission featuring music by 4 british women composers - the first half is a celebration of women in music and the second half is a toe tapping selection of different dances from Around the world.” - Harriet Adie

8 booking Form

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Booking Seats You should order using the form in this brochure (or print one from our website). You can also phone and book using a credit card or debit card. Many of our seats are booked within a few weeks of the brochure going out, so please try to book early. We do not normally send out tickets, but ask you to retain your acknowledgement letter instead. If should you lose it, do not worry as we have all of the information on file. If you would like separate tickets to pass on to guests, please mention this on the phone or in the booking form. As a rule, we do not make refunds, but may be prepared to resell attractive seats for concerts where there is a high demand for seats. We always appreciate it when people do inform us if they cannot make it to a concert.

Donations and Charitable Gift Aid Music at Leamington Hastings is a charity and the voluntary donation element is very important to us. I stress that it is voluntary, and whereas most people are happy to contribute the amount we suggest, some give less and some give more, and are quite free to do so. We do not receive any grants or public subsidies and your generosity is therefore very important. This allows us to claim gift-aid on donations made, and in doing so, helps us to pursue our charitable aims and maintain our musical standards. So please, if this applies to you, complete the relevant section of the order form. This also applies if you book initially by phone. You only need to fill the form in once, as long as you keep us informed of change of address and tell us if you cease to pay enough tax in a year to cover your donation. It is important that you do inform us if this is the case.

Changes to the Programme We reserve the right to change the programme, by substituting one work with an equivalent work, or substituting artists. This will be done primarily at the behest of the artists, if for example a certain work requires a specific player and they are ill. This is quite rare.

Consult Website for the most up-to-date Information All printed information is correct at the time of going to press. Any changes will usually be minor.

Eve Loiseau trained in Bel Canto with eminent Soprano Margaret Bennett. She had her debut at the Royal Festival Hall in Feb 2002.

He has brought together a small orchestra which can comprise a variety of instruments, and in this concert strings and a soprano, perfom a varied programme of popular pieces for accompanied voice, and for strings.

Following theit successful visit to us in 2015, Schola Cantorum of Oxford make a much- requetsed return visit. Schola Cantorum comprises around thirty singers, most of whom are students at Oxford University. Studying a broad variety of subjects across the Humanities and Sciences, the choir’s Schola members rehearse during term, and regularly perform in Oxford and across the country. The choir has developed a noteworthy international Cantorum reputation, having given concerts in recent years in Argentina, Italy, Israel, Mexico, Poland, Oxford Spain, China and France. In September 2014 the choir visited the USA for the first time since Directed by 1989, touring through New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Kentucky, Tennessee James Burton and Georgia.

As with all of our Christmas Concerts, early booking is highly advisable.

18 History of Music at Leamington Hastings

The Concerts The ‘Ray Law’ concerts began in 1971, as a personal project of the Law family. By 1980 the concerts had become well established, and 1982 saw the first visit of the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra, leading to a long and happy association. Over the next 20 odd years Ray built up the reputation of the concerts, and today Leamington Hastings is well known as a popular venue by many leading musicians. After managing the concerts for over 33 years, Ray Law retired and Mary-Grace and Peter Ogilvie carried on his traditions till 2010. Now David Potts aims to carry this on from 2011, with support from others, in the village and beyond. John Lill has been one of our most regular and popular performers, and we are honoured to have him as our President. In 2007 we became a registered charity. Our aims are to promote music in Leamington Hastings, to help appropriately in maintaining the fabric of our wonderful venue, to give young people the opportunity to experience world-class music, and to give talented young musicians opportunities to perform. For example, quite a few of the major ‘stars’ who have played for us over the years first visited Leamington Hastings as pupils of the Yehudi Menuhin School.

The Church ‘There belongeth to the said parish of Leamington Hastings three towns standing all upon manors and great farms of husbandry. Leamington, the parish town, where the church standeth, and the Parsonage house with all other edifices most fair and beautiful. These belongeth to the same church, and a great village of husbandry called Broadwell, and another husbandry called Hill; another village of most fruitful soil called , where the parson hath one hundred acres of glebe land … of most fruitful arable and pasture grounds..’ This beautiful church dates from the 12th century. The two features that stand out most, as far as the concerts are concerned, are the excellent acoustics, and the very long chancel (behind the stage). The acoustics have aroused favourable comments from many musicians, being ideally suited to chamber music. We believe that the main factor influencing this is the oak-panelled ceiling in the nave, which was installed during a refurbishment by Giles Gilbert Scott in the late 19th century. The long early English chancel is believed to have originally been built in the 13th century for the ‘Black Canons’, who came from the Augustinian Priory of St Oswald’s in Yorkshire. The chancel was completely destroyed in the mid 17th century, thought to be the work of the roundheads after a battle at Southam, around the time of the Battle of Edgehill. It was rebuilt again some 30 years later, and has been a feature of the church ever since. A substantial refurbishment of the tower and all the parapets and high level stonework was completed prior to the fire at the end of 2009. English Heritage gave a small amount towards the £125,000 cost, but most of the funds have come from other sources, and everyone involved with the church is immensely grateful to the Patrons and the concertgoers of Music at Leamington Hastings for the substantial contributions they have made. In 2010, following the fire, the church has been repaired and refurbished, and in 2011 we returned gratefully to concerts in the church. The population of Leamington Hastings is about the same size as that recorded in the , and planning restraints mean that it is unlikely to grow – it is likely to remain a peaceful rural place, heavily dependent on visitors to support these concerts.
