Though he’s still got style on the mic, Ferg’s latest is a regression into the gleeful ignorance that colored his earlier work. A$AP Ferg’s last LP, Always Strive and Prosper , was a portrait of the artist in a state of reflection, considering his life and work in the wake of his friend’s death and his own success. In some ways, it represented the rapper Ferg’s maturation—the wizened perspective of an ascendant rapper with a little bit of work under his belt. In that sense at least, his latest LP Still Striving is a regression into the gleeful ignorance that colored his earlier work. The line between “mixtape” and a proper “album” has long been inexorably blurred, with the distinction lying mostly in how the artist chooses to refer to it. For Ferg, it appears to be an indictment of the record’s quality, or perhaps how much time he spent on it. Like Ferg Forever , his latest tape feels light and loose, a collection of mostly throw-away verses and guest features that serve more to flex Ferg’s network than anything else. Of the 14 tracks on Still Striving , only three are without guest verses, and with few exceptions (Cam’ron, ), most of the guests are lyrical lightweights that avoid showing him up. More than anything else, the crowded real estate takes some of the pressure off of him as a writer; he rarely contributes more than a single verse and a hook. This is Still Striving (and Ferg’s) biggest strength, and most glaring weakness: His style is his substance. He attended an arts high school (NYC’s High School of Art & Design), and is an unabashed student of visual art and fashion. His father, Darold Ferguson, owned a boutique, and even designed the iconic Bad Boy logo; Ferg briefly followed in his footsteps, selling custom belts before his rap career took off. To this day he’s still got one foot in the trap and one on the runway and fits well within an A$AP aesthetic that embraces influences from Atlanta and Miami as much as it does those from NYC. But as he synthesizes these myriad references, any distinct identity gets lost in the shuffle. On “Plain Jane,” Ferg tips his cap to ’s ode to misogynoir, “Slob on My Knob,” which almost 20 years later has lost its shock value; On the collabo “Nasty (Who Dat),” he awkwardly flips JT Money’s rowdy singalong “Who Dat” with a darker, digitized drone. While much of the tape is forgettable, Still Striving is not without its standout moments. “East Coast Remix”—a one-off single turned posse cut that regrettably drops original collaborator Remy Ma—benefits from a competitive fire stoked by stacking big name rappers (Busta Rhymes, A$AP Rocky, ) atop a filthy DJ Khalil & Tariq Beats beat. But Ferg is at his most interesting when he drops his guard and gets personal, like when he laments his grandma’s arthritis (“Plain Jane”), or the various contraband family members have stored in their mattresses (“The Mattress Remix”). And on album closer “Tango”—the best Frankie P production on a tape chock full of them—Ferg is at his strongest, reflecting on his life and losses. Free of guest verses and tough-guy posturing, the twinkling ballad offers a rare glimpse of Ferg’s narrative skills: Speak to Yams’ mom on the daily, beautiful lady Feelin’ of her losing her baby drivin’ her crazy She say that I remind her of her son She make arroz con pollo and cook every time I come I get the ’itis, she tell me to go sleep in his bed And maybe some of Yams’ visions come to your head. It’s a touching moment from an MC that rarely offers a peek behind the curtain—and perhaps, a hint at what could be in store once the bright lights fade and the swag subsides. Still Striving. Out now, stream A$AP Ferg's new project "Still Striving," featuring , ASAP Rocky, Migos, , & more. It’s been a long time coming, since November to be exact when he first announced the project Still Striving , but after months of anticipation ASAP Ferg’s junior album has arrived. Laced with 14 tracks in total, the follow up to last year’s sophomore album Always Strive & Prosper features a star-studded line up of guest appearances, including Meek Mill, ASAP Rocky, Migos, French Montana, Rick Ross, , , , , Snoop Dogg, & more. Meanwhile production is handled by the likes of Malay Raw, Frankie P, DJ Khalil, & among others. Speaking on the album with Billboard, Ferg had the following to say about its sound… “This sound is definitely more turnt-up. I gave people some boom-bap on Always Strive and Prosper. The "Psycho" joint in particular, "Let It Bang," and just some spoken word on "Beautiful People." That was more introspective, I would say, as far as getting people to know who Ferg is; the trials and tribulations of my life.” He then added that he wanted to make club records this time around, “With Still Striving, I wanted to hit the clubs. I wanted to have some fun, since we were so serious on Always Strive and Prosper. I want to hit people with some bangers that'll keep them moving. “ Led by the previously heard singles “Plain Jane,” “East Coast (Remix)” & “Aww Yeah,” fans can now stream the project in its entirety via Apple Music. Hit play & let us know what record you’re fuckin with the most? Don’t forget that Ferg will also be contributing to the A$AP Mob’s upcoming Cozy Tapes Vol. 2 project that is set to drop next week on August 25th as well. So stay tuned, more from Fergenstein is on the way, including an upcoming tour with fellow mob members too (peep dates for that right here). A$AP Ferg Still Striving. Earlier this year A$AP Ferg released his second studio album with RCA Records, the dense 20-track project wasn't a huge commercial success right out of the gate despite critical acclaim. Less than half a year later Ferg is already planning a new project titled "Still Striving" that he plans to release 'very soon'. The speed of this projects readiness is very unlike Ferg, it should be interesting to see if the project holds up to the standards that A$AP Mob fans have become accustomed to. Nia Long. A$AP Yams’ voice echoes “ season begins” as I stare at the cover art for “Still Striving”. Which, by the way, is unequivocally the greatest display of black excellence in art form of all time. Ferg is shown tying his durag, presumably after a long day of educating the youth on how to levitate with your cape out . Ferg hit the ground running in 2012 with his debut single “Work”, which would later be made into an instant classic remix in May of 2013. He followed that up with what I consider to be the absolute greatest song to play in your vehicle, “Shabba” featuring A$AP Rocky. Needless to say, he had things figured out early while still leaving himself room for improvement. Fast-forward to 2016, his sophomore effort “Always Strive And Prosper”. Ferg refers to this as his most honest body of work to that point, and it got a strong head start from the -assisted ““. “Hungry Ham” is easily one of the standout tracks here, which pays homage to his Hamilton Heights stomping grounds. “Strive” has a very interesting story behind how the Missy Elliott feature came about, which adds, even more, layers to an already creative album. Ferg ended up in the studio with Missy, Timbaland, and Magoo. Played the track and Missy immediately proclaimed that she needed that type of energy. She even offered to redo her verse to further polish it after agreeing to do the feature, which left Ferg is awe of such love and humility from a legend. Now, in 2017, we arrive at “Still Striving”. Ferg stated that now with the aforementioned “Always Strive And Prosper” album ‘off his chest’ so to speak, he’s been able to get back to a different zone musically. Recently I caught up with him to chop it about a few things ahead of the album. Mariano: Some artists grow their hair out or cut off social media etc when they’re in “album mode”, what’s your creative process and does it change depending on the project? A$AP Ferg: My creative process has nothing to do with my hair or social media. My process is thinking about overall what I want the project to sound like and what type of message I’m putting out. I like to get dressed up to go to the studio because I believe if you look good you feel great and that shines through music. Being part of a talent-heavy group can sometimes make an artist complacent, how have you and the other members of the Mob maintained motivation for solo projects as well? Maintaining my motivation for solo projects is filling voids that need to be fulfilled. Everybody on my team brings a different style of music. No one is in anybody’s lane. The Mob wasn’t in the club, so that’s what I brought to the table. That was a void that needed to be fulfilled. I also have experience going to school for art and fashion so that’s something else I brought to the table. “Still Striving” as a statement sounds like even with so much work done you don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. What is true success to Ferg? True success is being an entrepreneur, making art, clothing line high end/low end. Being my generation’s biggest entertainer. Raising the bar for art in culture. In terms of evolving musically, what’s been the key to growing but maintaining your core audience? My key to growing musically and maintaining my core audience is never changing who I am as a person. I never change my aesthetic. If it’s not natural to me I won’t do it. I believe my fans are similar to me, that’s why they relate to me in a lot of ways. So I wouldn’t go out my character, I just keep doing what I’m doing and I believe that translates through my music. Spoken like a true durag legend as well as a scholar. I’m giving this album the car test immediately because Ferg has yet to fail me in that department. Stay tuned for more A$AP Mob waves with the release of “Cozy Tapes Vol, 2” set to release August 25th.
