NationalNational SurveySurvey ofof NativeNative WoodlandsWoodlands 20032003 --20082008 Volume I: Main report Philip Perrin, James Martin, Simon Barron, Fionnuala O’Neill, Kate McNutt & Aoife Delaney Botanical, Environmental & Conservation Consultants Ltd. 2008 A report submitted to the National Parks & Wildlife Service Executive Summary The National Survey of Native Woodlands in Ireland included the survey of 1,217 woodland sites across all 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland during 2003-2007. Site selection was carried out using the Forest Inventory Planning System 1998 (FIPS) and local knowledge. Surveys comprised the recording of site species lists and information at the site level on topography, management, grazing, natural regeneration, geographical situation, adjacent habitat types, invasive species, dead wood and boundaries. Relevés were recorded in each of the main stand types identified at each site. For each relevé, data were recorded on vascular plant and bryophyte cover abundance, soil type and soil chemistry, notable lichens, stand structure, and natural regeneration. Data were also incorporated from a number of external sources. This resulted in a database with data from 1,320 sites and 1,667 relevés. The relevé dataset was analysed using hierarchical clustering and indicator species analysis. Four major woodland groups were defined: Quercus petraea – Luzula sylvatica (260 relevés), Fraxinus excelsior – Hedera helix (740 relevés), Alnus glutinosa – Filipendula ulmaria (296 relevés) and Betula pubescens – Molinia caerulea (371 relevés). Further analysis of the dataset divided these four groups into twenty-two vegetation types. For each vegetation type a synoptic table of the floristic data was produced, together with a list of key indicator species, a list of example sites, summary environmental and stand structure data and a distribution map. -

ARTHUR’S WAY, CELBRIDGE Arthur’s Way is a heritage trail across northeast County Kildare that follows in the footsteps of Arthur Guinness. In just 16 km, it links many of the historic sites associated with Ireland’s most famous brewers – the Guinness family. The Story of a House Kevin Casey Everything we know about Nathaniel Clements suggests that he was an archetypal Ascendancy man. Eighteenth century Dublin was a good place in which to be young, rich and of the ruling class. The Treaty of Limerick - the event that marked the beginning of the century as definitively as the Act of Union ended it - provided a minority of the population, the Ascendancy, with status, influence and power. Penal Laws, imposed upon Roman Catholics and Dissenters, made it impossible for them to play an active part in Government or to hold an office under the Crown. Deprived of access to education and burdened with rigorous property restrictions, they lived at, or below, subsistence level, alienated from the ruling class and supporting any agitation that held hope of improving their lot. Visitors to the country were appalled by what they saw: "The poverty of the people as I passed through the country has made my heart ache", wrote Mrs. Delaney, the English wife of an Irish Dean. "I never saw greater appearance of misery." Jonathan Swift provided an even more graphic witness: "There is not an acre of land in Ireland turned to half its advantage", he wrote in 1732, "yet it is better improved than the people .... Whoever travels this country and observes the face of nature, or the faces and habits and dwellings of the natives, will hardly think himself in a land where law, religion or common humanity is professed." For someone like Nathaniel Clements, however, the century offered an amalgam of power and pleasure. -

Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis centres on the analysis of the sustainable management of visitor attractions in Ireland and the development of a tool to aid attraction managers to becoming sustainable tourism businesses. Attractions can be the focal point of a destination and it is important that they are sustainably managed to maintain future business. Fáilte Ireland has written an overview of the attractions sector in Ireland and discussed how they would drive best practice in the sector. However, there have still not been any sustainable management guidelines from Fáilte Ireland for tourist attractions in Ireland. The principal aims of this research was to assess tourism attractions in terms of water, energy, waste/recycling, monitoring, training, transportation, biodiversity, social/cultural sustainable management and economic sustainable management. A sustainable management checklist was then developed to aid attraction managers to sustainability within their attractions, thus saving money and the environment. Findings from this research concluded that tourism attractions in Ireland are not sustainably managed and there are no guidelines, training or funding in place to support these attraction managers in the transition to sustainability. Managers of attractions are not aware or knowledgeable enough in the area of sustainability. -

To Whom these Sheets with the utmost Respect are Humbly Inscribed by James Leoni the Inv:r and Direct:r of it May 25th : 1738. The “Lord Vist: Shannon” was Richard Boyle, 2nd (and last) Viscount, grandson and heir of Francis Boyle, the sixth and youngest son of the “Great” Earl of Cork, founder of the Boyle dynasty. Both Viscounts were soldiers. The first was ennobled in 1660 for his part in suppressing the rebellion in Ireland. The second had an exceptional professional career, becoming field-marshal of all the King’s forces jointly with the 2nd Duke of Argyll. He was born about 1674 and married twice, first, in 1695, to a daughter of the 5 th Earl of Dorset, and widow of his cousin Roger, 2nd Earl of Orrery, secondly (after 1710) to Grace Senhouse, daughter of a Cumberland gentry family from Netherhall, near Maryport. By her he had a daughter, also called Grace, who in 1744 (after his death) married Charles Sackville, then Earl of Middlesex, and from 1765 2nd Duke of Dorset.1 Grace was Lord Shannon’s sole heiress, and she or her husband continued to occupy the Arlington Street house until its sale to Lord Weymouth between 1765 and 1769.2 The head of Lord Fig. -

Neoclassical architecture 1 Neoclassical architecture Neoclassical architecture was an architectural style produced by the neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century, both as a reaction against the Rococo style of anti-tectonic naturalistic ornament, and an outgrowth of some classicizing features of Late Baroque. In its purest form it is a style principally derived from the architecture of Classical Greece and the architecture of Italian Andrea Palladio. The Cathedral of Vilnius (1783), by Laurynas Gucevičius Origins Siegfried Giedion, whose first book (1922) had the suggestive title Late Baroque and Romantic Classicism, asserted later[1] "The Louis XVI style formed in shape and structure the end of late baroque tendencies, with classicism serving as its framework." In the sense that neoclassicism in architecture is evocative and picturesque, a recreation of a distant, lost world, it is, as Giedion suggests, framed within the Romantic sensibility. Intellectually Neoclassicism was symptomatic of a desire to return to the perceived "purity" of the arts of Rome, the more vague perception ("ideal") of Ancient Greek arts and, to a lesser extent, sixteenth-century Renaissance Classicism, the source for academic Late Baroque. Many neoclassical architects were influenced by the drawings and projects of Étienne-Louis Boullée and Claude Nicolas Ledoux. The many graphite drawings of Boullée and his students depict architecture that emulates the eternality of the universe. There are links between Boullée's ideas and Edmund Burke's conception of the sublime. Pulteney Bridge, Bath, England, by Robert Adam Ledoux addressed the concept of architectural character, maintaining that a building should immediately communicate its function to the viewer.
