RAC0010.1177/0306396815608357Race & ClassKelly 608357research-article2015 SAGE Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore, Washington DC Jubilee and the limits of African American freedom after Emancipation BRIAN KELLY Abstract: Scholarship generated in the post-civil rights US underpins a growing consensus that any honest confrontation with the American past requires an acknowledgment both of the nation’s foundations in racially-based slave labour and of the critical role that the enslaved played in ending that system. But scholars equally need to examine why the end of slavery did not deliver freedom, but instead – after a short-lived ‘jubilee’ during which freedpeople savoured their ‘brief moment in the sun’ – opened up a period of extreme repression and violence. This article traces the political trajectory of one prominent ex-slave and Republican party organiser, Elias Hill, to assess the constraints in which black grassroots activists operated. Though mainly concerned with the dashed hopes of African Americans, their experience of a steep reversal is in many ways the shared and profoundly significant legacy of ex-slaves across the former plantation societies of the Atlantic world. Brian Kelly, reader in US history at Queen’s University Belfast, has published widely on the prob- lem of racial antagonism and its impact on working-class politics in the US. His first book, Race, Class and Power in the Alabama Coalfields, 1908–1921 (Illinois, 2001), won the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize. Former director of the After Slavery Project, he is co-editor with Bruce Baker of After Slavery: race, labor and citizenship in the Reconstruction South (Florida, 2013), and is completing an extended monograph on grassroots black political mobilisation in Reconstruction South Carolina. -

REVIEWS OF BOOKS History of Stearns County, Minnesota. By WILLIAM BELL MITCHELL. In two volumes. (Chicago, H. C. Cooper Jr. and Company, 1915. xv, xii, 1536 p. Illustrated) These two formidable-looking volumes, comprising some fif teen hundred pages in all, are an important addition to the literature of Minnesota local history. The author is himself a pioneer. Coming to Minnesota in 1857, he worked as surveyor, teacher, and printer until such time as he was able to acquire the St. Cloud Democrat. He later changed the name of the paper to the St. Cloud lournal, and, after his purchase of the St. Cloud Press in 1876, consolidated the two under the name St. Cloud Journal-Press, of which he remained editor and owner until 1892. During this period he found time also to discharge the duties of receiver of the United States land office at St. Cloud, and to serve as member of the state normal board. It would appear, then, that Mr. Mitchell, both by reason of his long resi dence in Stearns County and of his editorial experience, was preeminently fitted for the task of writing the volumes under review. Moreover, he has had the assistance of many of the prominent men of the county in preparing the general chapters of the work. Among these may be noted chapters 2-6, dealing with the history of Minnesota as a whole during the pre-territorial period, by Dr. P. M. LASS birthplace of Minnesota, primarily because on August 26, 1848, invited Sdelegates to the Stillwater Conven- tion chose veteran fur trader Henry Hastings Sibley to press Minnesota’s case for territorial status in Con- gress. About a week and a half after the convention, however, many of its members were converted to the novel premise that their area was not really Minnesota but was instead still Wisconsin Territory, existing in residual form after the State of Wisconsin had been admitted to the union in May. In a classic case of desperate times provoking bizarre ideas, they concluded that John Catlin of Madison, the last secretary of the territory, had succeeded to the vacant territorial governorship and had the authority to call for the Dr. Lass is a professor of history at Mankato State University. Last year, after 20 years of focused collecting in a very specific slice of Americana, we issued our first catalogue, and we want to thank all of our new friends, clients, and colleagues who made it a success--successful enough, at any rate, for there to be a Catalogue 2. Like Catalogue 1, our second contains twenty-five items with important stories to tell, stories that range widely across the American experience: from the risk book of a London underwriter during the War of 1812 to the only military encounter between the United States and Texas, from an unrecorded broadside that captures the birth of San Francisco to a revolution in women’s fashion; from an iconic view of Harvard University to the diary of a young teacher in Reconstruction-era Nashville; and from the poignant words of a young African American cadet unjustly dismissed from West Point to the plainspoken narrative of an elderly woman writing of her captivity as a child. Whether manuscript diaries, ledgers, and letters, printed pamphlets and broadsides, photographs, or even a children’s spelling book, they all contribute new ways of seeing and thinking about the broader currents of American history. Our name is what they have in common. They are primary sources, and they are largely uncharted. This fall, like last, we offer a new catalogue with twenty-five unexpected items, fresh to the trade.
