RE: Freedom of Information Request 201617 / 059 – and drug treatment for children

Your Query Date of Request May 2016

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act, I would be grateful if you could comply with the following request.

On how many occasions were children treated for (a) alcohol-related, or (b) drug-related injuries or illnesses in (i) 2014-15, and (ii) 2015-16, broken down by (A) 0-4 years olds, (B) 5-9 year olds, (C) 10-14 year olds, (D) 15-17 year olds.

Clarification I would be grateful if treatment could cover (a) attendances at an emergency department and (b) admissions to hospital.

Response

Please note: • NHS Orkney is a small remote and rural health board which operates one hospital, Balfour Hospital. • The data provided does not differentiate between non-intentional and intentional ingestion of alcohol • A&E data has been interrogated based on the alcohol involvement data field and electronically recorded diagnostic information. • The information provided below relating to inpatient admissions is taken from the SMR01 data set. • NHS Orkney can provide the number of patients diagnosed with an alcohol related condition at any one of the six available diagnostic coding positions. • As per rationale followed by ISD the ICD10 codes listed at the bottom of this response relating to alcohol and drug admissions have been used (please see for further information: ISD drugs and alcohol misuse webpage)

Please see the table below which provides information on the number of inpatient admissions and A & E presentations to the Balfour Hospital, patient aged 17 and under.

2014/15 2015/16 A&E presentations Alcohol related 17 10 Drug related 0 0 Inpatient admissions Alcohol related * 6 <5 Drug related * <5 0

* Due to the small number of patients involved (< 5 individuals) there is a potential risk of patients being identified from the information. Therefore a further breakdown to provide the number of admissions per year is exempt under Section 38(1) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.
