The flashes of Lunatic's, Jake's, Barnaby's, and Kotetsu's formative childhood experiences, and how those led them to where they are now. That's one of the central questions of this manga adaptation, and it required some major shifts in how the final conflict went down. For one, in the anime, Kotetsu and Barnaby are responsible for Jake's death. It's not as simple as outright killing him, since it happens in the heat of battle and there are some contributing factors, but the way the story unfolded here, that wouldn't have worked. Instead, we get Kotetsu telling Barnaby he believes in him. That he trusts him to Tiger & Bunny: Vol. 9 what's right. And in that final moment, with the rage and pain swirling and his parents' murderer finally on the ground in front of him, Barnaby has the opportunity to make a choice. Kotetsu's face is what he thinks of while making that decision - earnest, kind, trusting Tiger & Bunny: Vol. 9 and seeing him as more than the agent of revenge Barnaby has spent the last twenty years of his life becoming. And Barnaby lets his need for revenge go. He's found something else to live for: being a hero, and Kotetsu's partner. I loved the humorous, happy scenes that closed out this story, showing how all the heroes were doing after winding down from such an intense conflict. And in the end, this set definitely ended up being worth it; it's fascinating that it manages to tell a different version while keeping the heart of the story and the characters' relationships with each other intact.
