FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sarasota, FL (July 1, 2018) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sarasota, FL (July 1, 2018) Media Contact: Rebeca Fernandez [email protected] 941.365.8400 SARASOTA CUBAN BALLET SCHOOL WINS BRONZE MEDAL AT 2018 USA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION Sarasota, FL.- Harold Mendez, a 16-year-old dance student at the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School (SCBS), won the bronze medal in the Junior Male category at the 2018 USA International Ballet Competition (USA IBC) held from June 10 to June 23 in Jackson, Mississippi. 119 dancers —ages 14 to 28— participated in the by-invitation-only, two-week Olympic style competition. After three rounds of world-class performances, a panel of international judges selected only 18 dancers, representing eight different nations, as the competition’s medal winners. When the winners were announced at a gala on June 22, Harold's coach and SCBS Co-Artistic Director, Ariel Serrano had double the reason to feel proud. It turned out that Katherine Barkman, a former SCBS student and now a principal dancer at Ballet Manila had won the silver medal in the Senior Female category. "Being distinguished at USA IBC allows both Harold and Katherine to take their places among the world’s best young ballet dancers,” said Serrano. USA IBC was founded in 1979 by renowned American dancer and educator Thalia Mara. In 1982, the United States Congress and former President Ronald Reagan passed a Joint Resolution designating Jackson as the official home of the event. Today, USA IBC is one of the five most prestigious ballet competitions in the world. —More— Road to Bronze Six months of intense training preceded Mendez’s fourth trip to the winner's podium —previously, he won medals at 2014 Cuba’s Grand Prix, 2016 Youth America Grand Prix Semifinals, and 2017 World Ballet Competition. Mornings classes at Sarasota High School were followed by six hours on the sprung floor of SCBS studios, where he perfected four classical and two contemporary ballet solos that blew away his competition and amazed everyone who saw him perform. Medaling at the third oldest international ballet competition in the world while representing the United States is a dream come true for the young man. Three years ago, his family left Cuba so he could continue his training to become a professional dancer. "Moving to Sarasota has been great, here I have the best coach anyone could ask for and I get to perform for crowds who love ballet as much as I do," said Mendez. After a well-deserved week of rest, Harold will get back to the studio to prepare for SCBS’ On Stage Performance on July 28, at 7 pm at the Sarasota Opera House. In August, he'll start preparing for his next international competition: The Grand Prix de Lausanne to be held on February 2019, in Switzerland. "I want the World to know the kind of talent we have in Sarasota and the support we receive from the community. Harold is a phenomenon, but without the support of our town's generous community, getting him to Jackson would have been impossible," acknowledges Serrano. SCBS’ Co-Artistic Director and Harold’s teacher hopes that Harold and Katherine's victories will reveal Sarasota's potential as a training ground for ballet talent. About The Sarasota Cuban Ballet School SCBS was founded in 2012 by the Cuban-born husband and wife team of Ariel Serrano and Wilmian Hernandez. They both trained at the elite National Ballet School of Cuba and performed internationally. In 1993 they moved to Sarasota to join the Sarasota Ballet. Co-Artistic Directors of SCBS, they teach classes at all levels for students from age three to adults, but the heart of the School’s program is a rigorous training course to prepare talented, serious young dancers for professional careers. Students of SCBS have gone on to perform with Dance Theater of Harlem, Milwaukee Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, Ballet Manila, Ballet Municipal de Lima and the Royal Ballet School and Company. About the Cuban Style SCBS is one of the few schools in the United States specializing in the Cuban training style, which is renowned for its athleticism, passion and grace. The Cuban Style is an authentic movement of classical ballet with influences from all the major schools —French, Italian and Russian. It emphasizes dancing with the entire body and promoting harmonious movement among arms, legs and torso. It is very clean and precise, yet very graceful. It has a romantic feel, with attentive partnering, and is changing the face of modern ballet throughout the world. This award-winning School provides world-class ballet instruction in the tradition of the Cuban method. Stay informed—follow us on: .

Press Information → 2020/21 Season THE VIENNA ① STATE BALLET 2020/21 »Along with my team and my dancers, I intend to work towards developing the Vienna State Ballet into a major hotspot of the art of dance in Austria and Europe forming an ensemble that reflects and inspires the traditions, changes and innovations of the lively metropolis, city of art and music, Vienna.« Martin Schläpfer Martin Schläpfer takes over the direction of the Vienna State Ballet with the 2020 / 21 season. The renowned Swiss choreographer and ballet director has recently led the multi-award-winning Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg to international acclaim. His works fascinate with their intensity, their virtuosity, their deeply moving images and a concise language of movement, which is understood as making music with the body, but always reflects the atmosphere and questions of today’s world. Several performances offer the opportunity to encounter Martin Schläpfer’s art – including two world premieres: Two new pieces for Vienna are being created to Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and Dmitri Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, which also mark the beginning of the intensive creative dialogue that Martin Schläpfer will be establishing with the artists of his ensemble in the coming years. As director, Martin Schläpfer is a bridge-builder who will naturally continue to cultivate the great ballet traditions, but will also enrich the programme with important contemporary artists and a great variety of choreographic signatures. The masters of American neo-classical ballet George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins will continue to be among the fixed stars of the Vienna repertoire, as will the Dutchman Hans van Manen.

  • January 2020 Resident Choreographers
® Global Resident Choreographer Survey JANUARY 2020 Summary Dance Data Project® (DDP) has conducted an initial examination of resident choreographer positions globally within the ballet industry. DDP found that among the 116 international and U.S. ballet companies studied, a significant majority have hired men as resident choreographers. The study reveals that 37 of the 116 ballet companies surveyed globally employ resident choreographers. Twenty-eight of these 37 companies have placed exclusively men in this position (76%). DDP found that 22 of the 69 U.S. ballet companies surveyed employ resident choreographers. Sixteen of these 22 domestic companies have hired exclusively men in this position (73%). DDP also found that 15 of the 47 international ballet companies examined employ resident choreographers. Only 2 of these 15 companies have hired exclusively women (13%), although one international company employs four resident choreographers (1 woman, 3 men). © DDP 2020 Dance DATA Global Resident Project] Choreographer Survey Introduction A note about resident choreographers: The position of resident choreographer is one of the most secure opportunities for the otherwise freelance choreographer. The position offers a contract with a steady salary, the possibility of benefits, a group of dancers with whom to workshop, time, access to set, costume, lighting designers and a regular audience. Most ballet companies do not employ resident choreographers, given the expense of an additional employee and funding regular commissions. Quite often, an artistic director serves as a de facto resident choreographer, regularly creating for the company and producing new works. DDP reviewed as many prominent dance publications1 as possible and consulted several leaders of ballet companies and dance venues in the U.S.

  • Helpmann, Nolan and Williamson's Australian Ballet the Display
2016 © Carolyn Philpott & Anne-Marie Forbes, Context 40 (2015): 17–34. From the Outside: Helpmann, Nolan and Williamson’s Australian Ballet The Display (1964) Carolyn Philpott & Anne-Marie Forbes The characterisation of a country and its culture can often be confronting for the citizens, particularly when this is critical and emphasises negative aspects of accent, lifestyle or behaviours. Couched as humour it can be more readily accepted, but it takes courage and perhaps a degree of personal outrage to mount serious critique on one’s own countrymen. On 14 March 1964 a new work was premiered by the Australian Ballet at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide, as part of the programme for the third Adelaide Festival of Arts. The Display was the result of a commission by the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust to Australia’s most famous ballet dancer, Robert Helpmann (1909–1986), for the creation of a new ballet. This ballet resulted in an unprecedented collaboration with two other expatriate Australians, Sidney Nolan (1917–1992) and Malcolm Williamson (1931–2003). The following article explores the nature of this collaboration and the ways in which this ballet employed tropes of both traditional ballet and ‘Australianness’ to satirise and comment upon aspects of Australian culture. Furthermore, it invites reconsideration of the symbolic and autobiographical aspects of the principal dancer who is known only as ‘The Outsider.’ Prior to his involvement with The Display, Helpmann had enjoyed a dazzling career in London, and by the late 1950s was becoming increasingly renowned as a producer and choreographer. The involvement of such a celebrity (and a South Australian by birth), was the kind of drawcard 17 18 Context 40 (2015): Philpott & Forbes needed to raise the international profile of the fledgling Adelaide Festival.

Ballet Hispánico brings captivating style, crisp technique, and charismatic bravado to the Ted Shawn Theatre. “The versatile Ballet Hispánico dancers are exquisite” (The Washington Post). Ballet Hispánico offers the thrilling diversity of Latino culture—a fusion of classical, Latin, and contemporary dance. The program features the Pillow-commissioned and flamenco- inspired Línea Recta by Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, set to Spanish guitar by Eric Vaarzon Morel. Other works include Eduardo Vilaro’s Danzón, which features a contemporary take on the national dance of Cuba, and El Beso by award-winning Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano. Línea Recta (2016) Choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa From one of today’s most sought-after choreographers comes a powerful and resonant work that explores an intriguing aspect of flamenco dance: the conspicuous absence of physical partnering. While maintaining the integrity and hallmark passion of the genre, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa imagines an original and explosive movement language premised upon the theme of partnership and performed to live flamenco guitar by Eric Vaarzon Morel. Línea Recta came to fruition through Ballet Hispánico’s Instituto Coreográfico, an innovative choreography lab program for Latino dance makers.
