Title: Puberty Blues — Puberty Blues is an Australian classic which chronicles a special moment of our history. In the early s, the middle baby boomers were coming into their adolescence and early adulthood. The sexual revolution was in full flow. In America "teenagerdom" had come into its own Puberty Blues the sixties. It happened here in the seventies, with the arrival of drugs and the anti-Vietnam Puberty Blues youth rebellion. And the wild mood finds its apotheosis in surf culture. Puberty Blues is Puberty Blues picture of Australian suburban life in revolution as the wild kids get their rocks off, exploring the worlds of the parents in a context where money and loans are much cheaper, divorce is much easier, full employment and prosperity abound, conventional morality is shifting and everything is endlessly possible. Based on the novel by Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey. I came across this on the free streaming service Tubi. It concerns two girls growing up in the late s in Australia and their families. From an American point of view it is quite jarring. First, as an American I sometimes have trouble understanding what they are saying lots of Australian slang -- in terms of a guy Puberty Blues up with you they call it "being dropped. Something even pay tv doesn't Puberty Blues do these days. Sue and Debbie are "good" girls determined to get in with the cool group. To do so basically the rules are, that Sue and Debbie seem fine with, you just Puberty Blues up sex at the Puberty Blues of a hat to any boy in the group. At first I wanted to give up on the show but both learn important lessons and the results are more "are you there god it is me Margret" than "Euphoria". One good break from the girls is the parents. Unlike most teen dramas each of the girls parents have their own storylines that make sense for people with teenage kids in the 70s. Sue's parents are dealing with a struggling business and trying to keep the magic alive for people that love each other. Debbie's parents are in marriage Puberty Blues and Dad is contemplating an affair. All of these stories are somewhat boring by todays standards but effectively told and engrossing. One reason I can't give it a full 10 stars is that it is a little depressing so far. At one point Debbie's little brother after watching all the dysfunction around him says he doesn't want to grow up if this world is what is waiting Puberty Blues him. Right there with you man. The girls have to follow lots of strange customs, e. Ugly Puberty Blues have two choices - being bitches and hate boys, or being generally cheap and looked down upon by everyone. The afternoons are spent on the beaches, in the backseats of car or at home-alone-parties where sex and alcohol are the main ingredients. Parents and teachers are trying to straighten the kids out, but that is not easy. Yeah, I agree with the previous comment that this film was probably meant as a serious way to reach teenagers at the turn of the 80s, but now is surely filed in the 'cult' section of most video Puberty Blues and hired out by trash-lovers as a nifty snapshot of suburban middle-class Sydney and surfie-culture in the late 70s. Fans of Aussie trash such as Prisoner CBH will love this - everyone else, steer clear, you'll just think it's boring and crap. Looking for something to watch? Puberty Blues is a Australian coming-of-age film directed by Bruce Beresford. The film is based on the novel Puberty Bluesby Gabrielle Carey and Kathy Lette Puberty Blues, which is a protofeminist teen novel about two year-old girls from the middle class Sutherland Shire in Sydney. The girls attempt to create a popular social status by ingratiating themselves with the " Greenhill gang" of surferswho have a careless attitude toward casual sex, drugs and alcohol over the course of one Sydney summer. For censorship reasons, in the film their age was increased to Much of the content of the novel appears in the film, with several passages of Puberty Blues recounted by the film's protagonist Debbie Nell Puberty Blues in a voice-over narration. The film closely follows the story and character trajectory of the novel. Some of the novel's characters are composites in Puberty Blues film. The tone Puberty Blues the novel is Puberty Blues darker than that of the film, and in the novel Debbie and her best friend Sue, who join the surfer Puberty Blues, are shown to be much more willing participants in activities than they are in the film. Some of the darker moments of the book have been removed or softened for the film. The film adds a comedy beach brawl between the surfers and the lifeguards not present in the novel. Lette complained that "the Puberty Blues sanitised the plot by omitting Puberty Blues references to miscarriage and abortion. The movie Puberty Blues a culture in which gang Puberty Blues is incidental, mindless violence is amusing and hard drug use is fatal, but it was unable to address the consequences of the brutal sexual economy in which the girls must exist. Much of the obscure surfer slang of the novel was omitted from the film. The novel features some discussion about television series Number One Puberty Blues of the novel that mentions the title is recounted by the film's protagonist in a voice-over narration, but because the series had ended by the time of the film the series title is replaced by the generic term "television". Television writer Margaret Kelly was working at a writing workshop at a suburban theatre where she met Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey, who had written a number of unpublished stories about growing up in the surfing beaches of southern Sydney. Kelly showed the stories to producer and writer Joan Longand optioned Puberty Blues film rights. Long first approached Gillian Armstrong to direct but she Puberty Blues it down. Then Bruce Beresford read the book and wrote asking to direct:. I bought it [the novel] while I was waiting for a bus in North Sydney. I went to get a chocolate or something and I saw a pile of these things sitting on the counter. I thought I'd buy one and read it on the bus going home. It was remarkable, a very well-expressed book. And the girls were only fifteen. It was a sort of insight into the way of Puberty Blues of Puberty Blues kids, which was a revelation to me Kathy Lette was a Puberty Blues livewire and so was the other girl, Gabrielle Carey. The lead roles were cast after an extensive selection process. It touches on this and it touches on that. I really like it. It's subtle and doesn't preach: 'This is the way of life. The parents who go and see it will come out and either believe it or it will give Puberty Blues a bit of a jolt. They'll start looking at their kids a different way and Puberty Blues to bridge the generation gap. I think it is also a comment on peer group pressure, male chauvinism Puberty Blues teenage groups, school and parent hassles. Schofield found the surfing scenes easy because she was an avid Puberty Blues in real life. But once I was, I wanted out before it got too heavy. I hated the alcohol and the drug scene. I saw so many kids fall down on the ground after taking drugs. It was hard work. The theme song " Puberty Blues " was written by Tim Finn. In the film it was sung by Sharon O'Neill. Puberty Blues was first released on home video in the early s.
