Christus Rex

The Solemnity of Christ the King is a modern feast and the most recent of the Church's festi- vals dedicated to the Person of Our Lord. It was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI and given its current position at the end of the liturgical year by Pope Paul VI in 1969. But despite its twentieth-century origins, this feast draws deeply from the wells of the most ancient traditions of the Church in celebrating the august figure of the Rex Gloriae, seated at the right of the Fa- ther, enthroned in splendor and shining in golden mosaics from the apses of the oldest Chris- tian basilicas.

In the papal encyclical establishing the feast, Quas Primas, Pope Pius XI deliberately and pro- vocatively seized upon the image of divine monarchy to rebuke modern secularism and to pro- claim the "Social Reign of Christ the King." Insisting that all nations and all peoples are bound by the precepts of divine and natural law, that Christ is indeed the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, here and now, and that every society and government owe Him undisputed homage, the Pope also taught that men should seek the peace of Christ in the kingdom of Christ, hereafter-- Pax Christi in Regno Christi.

Originally assigned to the last Sunday of October, the Feast of Christ the King was intended to precede and frame All ' Day on November 1 in showing Christ in glory reigning with His Blessed Ones in heaven. In his decision to move the observance to the last Sunday of the litur- gical year, taking the place of what had been the last Sunday after Pentecost, Pope Paul VI fur- ther emphasized the eschatological character of sacred time and of the Church's mission: Thy Kingdom come and Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Insofar as the liturgical year is nothing other than the life of drawn out in time and aimed at realizing the Kingdom of God, it is fitting that these days of grace culminate by rejoicing in the Majestas Domini and that we turn then in Advent to eager anticipation of the King Who is also the Baby in the manger at Bethlehem. And it is fitting too in our parish that we observe this glorious feast by keeping our annual custom of concluding the last Mass of the year with a Eucharistic Procession and Solemn Benediction, as we kneel and receive the King's blessing from His Sacred Body held aloft in the golden monstrance.
