Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Commitment Weekend is next weekend! We have raised 90% of our campaign goal of $1.25M and nearly 125 have joined our cause – but we need your help to go the final distance. Our parish has many needs and we must trust in God as a community in order to meet them:

 New parking lot devoid of dangerous pot-holes and ice patches – ensuring safer transit for people of all ages and abilities  Repaired windows in our Children’s Center – providing a toxin-free and energy efficient educational envi- ronment  Restored auditorium, cafeteria and kitchen spaces – unlocking new spaces for large gatherings and out- reach  Long-term maintenance “Legacy Fund” – tuckpointing, stained glass window preservation and other ne- cessities for an Evanston Historic District-designated, 153-year old church

Next weekend, June 8-9th, I will ask you to take a step in faith and make a pledge to our campaign. On Com- mitment Weekend we will ask each to complete a special card in Mass where they will indicate their de- cision on what they would like to give to the campaign over the next 5 years. Any pledge above and beyond – no matter how big or small – is greatly appreciated. We seek the involvement of as many as possible to achieve our goal. In preparation for this major event, please pray for God’s will in your life, our parish, and our greater Evanston community. Next, I ask you to pray about your own personal involvement in our capital cam- paign and the success of our Commitment Weekend. Finally, please reflect over all of the goodness you have experienced at Saint Mary Parish and how through participating in this campaign, you can help us better steward our incredibly diverse, friendly and welcoming parish home.

Gratefully yours in Christ, Father Kevin Campaign Plans for Saint Mary Parish Include Toxin Abatement & Energy Efficiency Our 1950s Children’s Center has served our parish families for many decades. Now it is in dire need of repair. The sealants of the Children’s Center windows contain a hazardous toxin no longer used in construction. Further, many of the windows are broken. Both children and teachers complain of the frigid air coming through the cracks in the windows during the winter months. Annually, about 30-40% of parish income comes from the leas- ing of this building to the YMCA. The YMCA is currently considering a new, 20-year lease with our church. Mak- ing repairs to the Children’s Center is critical for safeguarding families as well as our financial stability. In this campaign, we seek to fully replace these old, broken windows and their toxic sealants. Please help us be the good stewards we were called to be!

Broken windows in the Children’s Center (leased education building) are pictured above. Given mainte- nance has been deferred for years, many are covered in duct-tape to help keep out the elements. www.stmaryevanston.org Page 3 REFLECTION: ON THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD JAMES HOLZHAUER-CHUCKAS, DIRECTOR - UNITED CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY OF SKOKIE/EVANSTON

Elijah fasted for forty days in the wilderness as he journeyed. The people of Israel journeyed for forty years before their entry into the promised land. Moses went to find the face of God and searched for forty days. Forty seems to be a significant number in the scriptures, but why did Jesus leave his disciples for that long after his resurrection? For forty days after his resurrection, Jesus appears many times to his disciples to assure them that he had risen in order to prepare them to continue the work which he began while on earth.

Jesus' ascension was an end and a beginning for his disciples. While this occasion marked the end of Jesus’ physical presence with them, it marked the beginning of a new presence with them. Jesus promised to be with them until the end of time, even if not physically. As Jesus ascended to the right hand of God, he promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples and they would be anointed, which will occur at the Feast of Pentecost. When Jesus physically departs from his disciples, they were not left in sadness, rather they were filled with joy and had anticipation for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus' last words to his disciples instruct them to be witnesses to his mission to save and to proclaim this good news to all the world. Their task did not only include proclaiming this word to the people of Israel, but to all nations, which we would call evangelization. God's love and gift of salvation through the saving mission of his Son is not just for a few or, as we say in the Mass, for “many,” but for all. The gospel is the power of God to make us whole again.

The Ascension of the Lord is the greatest commission, given to the whole church, by God through the glorious . We’ve all been tasked with sharing in the responsibility of sharing the good news. We have not been left alone because the risen Christ works in us and through us by the power of the Holy Spirit. I ask you to think about the ways that you witness to others the joy of the gospel and hope of the resurrection. If you are part of one of the many wonderful ministries at St. Mary Parish, what does the ministry you participate in do to advance the mission of Jesus Christ?

May the Ascension of the Lord remind you that you are called. You are called to be Christ in the world. Now, you are the Body of Christ, the physical manifestation of Christ through how you live your life. Let us remember to be a mirroring image of Christ so that when others see us, they know we are disciples.

Contact the Parish Office to request a mass be offered for someone you know   that is in need of prayer,  for your own intentions, for the repose of someone’s soul.

The stipend is $10.

Page 4 www.stmaryevanston.org RESPECT LIFE THE POPE EMERITUS AND THE SCANDAL

On April 10 this year Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI published his thoughts on the Church and the Scandal of Sexual Abuse. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/full-text-of-benedict-xvi-the-church-and-the- scandal-of-sexual-abuse-59639

In his view the scandal stems from a loss of belief in God. The context for this unbelief, he asserts, is the replacement of the natural law in moral teaching by a hypothesis that morality is to be exclusively determined by the purposes of human action. In other words, there are no absolute goods or evils and the end justifies the means.

The first fundamental gift of faith, Benedict said, is “the certainty that God exits.” He continues:

A world without God can only be a world without meaning. For where, then, does everything that is come from? In any case, it has no spiritual purpose. It is somehow simply there and has neither any goal nor any sense. Then there are no standards of good or evil. Then only what is stronger than the other can assert itself. Power is then the only principle. Truth does not count, it actually does not exist.

He expands his point:

A society without God — a society that does not know Him and treats Him as non-existent — is a society that loses its measure. In our day, the catchphrase of God's death was coined. When God does die in a society, it becomes free, we were assured. In reality, the death of God in a society also means the end of freedom, because what dies is the purpose that provides orientation.

Why did pedophilia reach such proportions, he then asks?

“Ultimately, the reason is the absence of God.” God is regarded as the party concern of a small group and can no longer stand as the guiding principle for the community as a whole. This decision reflects the situation in the West, where God has become the private affair of a minority.

In remarks several weeks ago Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah expressed strong agreement:

The crisis of pedophilia in the Church, the scandalous and distressing multiplication of abuse has one and only one ultimate cause: the absence of God. Benedict XVI summarizes it in another formula that is also clear. I quote: “It is only where faith no longer determines the actions of man that such crimes are possible.”

The path forward for Benedict? “[W]e ourselves [must] once again begin to live by God and unto Him.” Simple and clear enough. But not necessarily easy.

As the Pope Emeritus notes: “Today’s Church is more than ever a ‘Church of Martyrs’”. Martyrdom comes in many forms. Keep that in mind next time you try voicing his take on the scandal in public company.
