Les fonds d'origine administrative offraient déjà toute la diversité des commencements de nos séries modernes, archives des ministères et archives des préfectures, dans lesquelles s'inscrit l'histoire quotidienne de la gestion, à tous les niveaux, d'une France que le Consulat et l'Empire ont dotée, pour la plus grande part, de ses structures définitives. On pouvait aussi mettre à contribution les archives de la Secrétairerie d'État impériale de Napoléon Ier, et celles de la Maison de l'Empereur, sous les deux règnes de Napoléon Ier et de Napoléon III. Mais à ces documents administratifs, reflets du génie organisateur et porteurs des décisions prises, il manquait souvent ce que, seuls, peuvent apporter les papiers plus intimes ou s'inscrivent mieux l'évolution des hommes et de leur pensée, les motivations réelles, les réticences et les espérances. Depuis cinquante ans, les archives privées n'ont cessé d'affluer vers nos dépôts publics et de combler très largement cette lacune. Fruit heureux d'une politique avisée menée par l'État pour la recherche et la préservation de ces fonds, c'est aussi celui de l'intelligente compréhension des propriétaires. Héritiers de l'histoire, ceux-ci ont de plus en plus nettement conscience des dangers qui menacent en notre temps les patrimoines historiques, et ils savent que les documents sont faits pour être matériau de l'histoire, non pour dormir dans l'inutilité des armoires fermées. C'est ainsi que les Archives nationales, déjà riches des fonds Beugnot, Bessières, Murat, Roederer et Persigny, entrés avec quelques autres au cours de la première moitié du vingtième siècle, se sont enrichies, depuis la seconde guerre mondiale, de quelque quatre-vingt-dix fonds d'archives privées intéressant directement l'histoire du Premier Empire ou du Second. Sans qu'il soit possible de les citer tous, on peut rappeler ici l'entrée, par voie de don, d'achat ou de dépôt, des archives Caulaincourt ( 1952), Berryer ( 1954), Mollien, Ney, Berthier, Davout ( 1955), Daru ( 1957), Fould ( 1958), Mackau, Fortoul ( 1959), Odilon Barrot ( 1963), Cambacérès ( 1964), Sieyès ( 1967), Gourgaud ( 1969), Masséna ( 1970), Poniatowski ( 1971), Suchet d'Albufera ( 1978). Et voilà, coup sur coup, deux acquisitions capitales. En 1977, c'étaient les archives du roi Joseph, riches de l'histoire des relations complexes entre le grand empire et les royaumes, celui de Naples et celui d'Espagne. Le duc de Wellington accordait à la France la préférence pour la cession de ces archives jadis prises sur le champ de bataille par le vainqueur de Vitoria. L'inventaire de ces documents, demeurés inédits jusqu'à nos jours, a été immédiatement entrepris. Les chercheurs pourront bientôt le consulter. De semblables dispositions étaient prises, dans le même temps, par le Prince Napoléon, soucieux de faire revenir en France des archives que la loi d'exil avait fait conserver à l'étranger. Acquises récemment par l'État, elles sont d'ores et déjà l'un des plus beaux fleurons des Archives nationales. Un inventaire détaillé est en chantier; il demandera de longs mois d'un travail qu'on ne s'étonnera pas de voir mener au niveau scientifique le plus élevé. Mais il m'a semblé que les historiens de France et d'ailleurs seraient heureux de disposer rapidement d'un état sommaire, mis au point grâce à un premier recensement effectué avant même le transfert des archives. On voudra bien considérer cet état sommaire comme un simple instrument d'information. Notre souhait est qu'il permette à chacun de connaître, dès maintenant, la substance historique de l'un des plus remarquables enrichissements qu'ait connu notre grand dépôt national. Introduction Après avoir reçu en dépôt de Monseigneur le comte de Paris les archives de Louis-Philippe, de ses aïeux et de ses descendants, en 1969, après avoir acheté en Angleterre les papiers de Joseph Bonaparte, roi d'Italie, puis d'Espagne, en 1977, voici que les Archives nationales acquièrent en 1979 un ensemble non moins prestigieux, les archives Napoléon, propriété jusqu'alors de Leurs Altesses Impériales le prince Napoléon, arrière-petit-fils du roi Jérôme, frère cadet de l'Empereur, et la princesse Napoléon, son épouse. 4 Archives nationales (France) Avant d'être transférés au palais Soubise, ces deux cent vingt cartons étaient conservés en Suisse, à Prangins, non loin de Lausanne, mais certains documents avaient déjà fait l'objet de plusieurs déménagements, car, à l'exemple des hommes et suivant leur destin, les archives sont souvent d'humeur voyageuse. Deux fonds étaient à l'origine de cet ensemble : d'une part les papiers conservés par l'impératrice Eugénie à Farnborough, transportés à sa mort, en 1920, chez le prince Victor (Note : Fils ainé du prince Napoléon et donc petit- fils du roi Jérôme. Certains papiers avaient été donnés de son vivant par Eugénie au prince, notamment en 1913 et 1915), à Bruxelles, dans son hôtel de l'avenue Louise, puis, après la vente de cet hôtel, au château de Ronchinne, près de Namur, enfin, en 1958, à Prangins ; et, d'autre part, les papiers qui étaient toujours demeurés à Prangins, depuis la construction de la propriété par le prince Napoléon (Note : Fils du roi Jérôme) dans les années 1880. Au premier fonds, qui pourrait être désigné par commodité sous le nom de fonds de Farnborough, appartenaient les papiers du Premier Empire (Napoléon Ier, ses frères et soeurs, à l'exclusion de Jérôme), en majeure partie reliés (beaucoup de volumes reliés portent le chiffre de l’impératrice Eugénie ; nous ne l’avons pas toujours signalé), les papiers du Second Empire (Napoléon III et Eugénie) contenus surtout dans des cartons et portefeuilles, et les papiers du prince Victor. Au second fonds, appelons-le fonds de Prangins, se rattachaient les papiers du roi Jérôme, et de son épouse, Catherine de Wurtemberg, ceux de leur fils le prince Napoléon, et de leur belle-fille, la princesse Marie-Clotilde de Sardaigne, enfin ceux du second fils de ceux-ci, le prince Louis, qui avait hérité de Prangins à la mort de son père en 1891. En effet, le prince Napoléon, en désaccord avec son fils aîné, le prince Victor, avait institué le cadet son héritier universel. Les archives de la princesse Mathilde, soeur du prince Napoléon, n'étaient pas à Prangins (voir 400AP/105), mis à part des dessins et des aquarelles de la princesse conservés par le prince Napoléon, quelques diplômes, quelques photographies et lettres. Ainsi, lorsqu'en 1958, Son Altesse Impériale le prince Louis-Napoléon joignit aux papiers de son oncle, ceux de son père conservés en Belgique, toutes ces archives se trouvèrent réunies en un même lieu. Elles comprenaient environ trois cents articles (registres, cartons, volumes reliés, portefeuilles, dossiers) rangés dans quatre armoires de la bibliothèque de Prangins. Le classement adopté avait été influencé par les vicissitudes passées et par l'aspect matériel des pièces, les archives reliées ayant été arbitrairement séparées des archives non reliées. Il ne pouvait être question d'adopter ce parti et de maintenir par exemple la scission entre les fonds de Farnborough et de Prangins. Arrivées rue des Francs-Bourgeois le 22 juin 1979, ces archives ont été enregistrées sous le numéro d’entrée 2839. Pour ces papiers, intégrés désormais dans la série des Archives privées des Archives nationales, sous la cote 400AP, un plan méthodique de classement s'imposait. Figurent maintenant en tête : l'Empereur, l'impératrice Joséphine et le roi de Rome, puis, après un dossier consacré à Madame Mère, au cardinal Fesch et à Eugène de Beauharnais, viennent par ordre d'âge les frères et soeurs de Napoléon : Joseph, avec la reine Julie, et ses filles Zénaïde et Charlotte, Lucien, prince de Canino, et ses enfants, Élisa, le prince Félix Bacciochi et leur fille, la comtesse Camerata, Louis, roi de Hollande, et Hortense, et là prennent place les archives du Second Empire, Napoléon III, Eugénie et le prince impérial, puis Pauline, enfin, en dernier lieu, le frère cadet de l'Empereur, le roi Jérôme, et ses descendants. La valeur de ces archives est immense. Parmi les papiers du Premier Empire, il suffirait de citer les innombrables lettres de l'Empereur : 231 lettres adressées à Joséphine entre 1796 et 1813, presque toutes autographes et signées, reliées en trois volumes, 624 lettres et pièces diverses adressées à Joseph, 1795-1815, 71 lettres à Élisa, 45 à Louis et 48 à Hortense entre 1795 et 1815, enfin 193 à Jérôme, 1799-1813.

As before all of them have been produced by members and friends of the AHRC-funded ‘Heirs to the Thone’ project at the University of St Andrews. We would like to renew our thanks to the AHRC and to the authors of these insightful vignettes. We are pleased to be able to offer them yet again as a collated digital ‘volume’ - carefully packaged to afford our readers maximum convenience along with - hopefully - fruitful and enjoyable reading. As the project formally completed its five-year run in March 2017, this will be the final annual. Over the years we have produced and published 36 separate essays. Producteur : Henri Alfred Germain André Froment-Meurice, né le 5 juin 1923 à Paris, commence ses études à l’Université de Paris où il obtient une licence ès lettres en littérature française, en littérature et civilisation américaines et en anglais, et poursuit sa formation à l’École libre de Sciences politiques d’où il sort deuxième de sa promotion. Lors de son service militaire effectué à la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, il est affecté au cabinet du général Kœnig, commandant en chef de la zone française d’occupation en Allemagne, à Baden-Baden, et participe en particulier aux liaisons avec le Conseil de contrôle quadripartite à Berlin. Il est démobilisé en mars 1946 et espère entrer au quai d’Orsay. La création de l’École nationale d’administration (ENA) va le contraindre à différer son projet. Reçu au concours, il intègre la promotion « Nations Unies » : c’est lors de son passage à l’ENA qu’il effectue en 1947 un stage en Algérie où il séjourne de février à décembre.
