Butterfly Recording Laura Sivell

County Butterfly Recorder

After the debacle that was the non-summer of 2012, things really could only get better. Early in 2013, it looked as if we were in for another terrible year, as the spring was so cold and early emergence delayed. Then, as I’m sure you’ll all remember, the sun came out and stayed out through most of the summer. And the butterflies responded as best they could. The Wider Countryside survey run by Butterfly Conservation showed a resurgence in the generalist species. The bad news is that the habitat specialists are still struggling - Pearl-bordered Fritillary, for instance, did even worse than in 2012. There had been a proposed project to capture some females and get them to lay eggs in captivity for a few days before releasing them, but not enough could be found to make this a viable or safe plan for the few that remained.

Please continue to send your butterfly records (remember, every little helps)to: Lancashire and Merseyside Laura Sivell, email [email protected]. Or by post to 22 Beaumont Place, Lancaster LA1 2EY. Phone 01524 69248. Please note that for records to be included in the annual report, the deadline is the end of January. Late records will still be used for the database, but once the report is written, I’m not going to update or rewrite on the basis of late records. The report is also going to have to be written earlier in the year, in February, as I’m full on with work in March/April and I just can’t do it! East Lancs John Plackett ([email protected]) from Nelson Nats has taken over the East Lancashire Butterfly Report, so please all send your records to him as well as the Lancashire recorder. Greater Manchester These records should only go to Peter Hardy, 81 Winstanley Road, Sale, M33 2AT, email [email protected] - not to Laura Sivell. Some people have been sending their records to both, leading to a fair amount of wasted time in sorting out the duplicate records. Likewise Lancashire and Merseyside records should only go to Laura.

Butterfly Report - the transect data Please bear in mind when reading the transect accounts that data for LWT, Leighton Moss , Trowbarrow Quarry and Yealand Hall Allotment has not been received so the assessment of how the specialist species of the Bay Limestones is not as complete as usual. Late Records Some records arrived too late for inclusion in the text - P Slater, B Townson and T Whittaker - as it was written before the records arrived. Some of their records are, however, included in the maps. All recorders, please bear in mind to get your records in by the end of January.

Key for the butterfly distribution maps

Blue crosses indicate sites recorded in the historical data set, but not the current one. For this report, current maps are 2009-2013 (when not 2013 alone), and the historical time period is 2004-2008.

2 High Counts table

An addition to the 2013 report is this table of high counts across the years for each species. As high counts are very much a matter of being in the right place at the right time, it would be wise not to ead too much into it, but some of the trends that are clear from other elements of the recording scheme are borne out here. For instance, Ringlet barely existed in Lancashire in 2000, but is now much more widely distributed and higher in numbers where it is found. Orange Tip numbers have remained fairly stable - some ups and downs but nothing major one way or the other. The highest counts of Green Hairstreak (213 and 651) were both from Docker Moor; there were no visits to this site in 2012 or 2013, so that series can’t be regarded as representative of what is happening to the species.

The declines in Pearl-bordered Fritillary and High Brown Fritillary are more marked than the table suggests. Whilst hanging on in quite reasonable numbers at a few sites, the wider picture is a lot bleaker, with very low counts at sites where they used to be far more frequent - if they are still there at all. As the sites are widely recorded, both by transects and casual visitors, there’s no doubt that the declines are very real, and as the remaining individuals find it harder to locate breeding partners and the offspring become more inbred, such declines are likely to continue.

You may notice that 2001 and 2007 figures are missing. I can’t find the reports for those years. If anyone has kept their copy and could supply the figures, I’d be very grateful.

Gait Barrows Warden’s route had a good increase, whilst there was a slight decline on the BMS walk. On the National Trust sites, Eaves Large Skipper Wood had an increase though Arnside Knott had a poor season. In 2012, the species was recorded at Lundsfield First 6.6.13 SR, Tarlescough Quarry near (the first records from this site for Last 25.8.13 DL, Wayoh many years). No-one recorded the butterfly there in 2013, SM, DM, RR, IH, Belmont though the habitat (seen out of the flight time and on a cool Highest 190 KL, Grane reservoirs on 21.7.13 day) , looks fantastic and with great potential. Well worth a 171 DL, Longworth on 5.7.13 look if you’re in the area. Dingy Skipper 2009-2013. Blue cross is 2004-2008. The picture for the Large Skipper was more mixed than the Small. There was a good increase on Jack Scout transect, and a sharp decline at Arnside Knott. Most others were average

First 15.4.13 JH, Atherton Last 24.10.13 LR, Eaves Wood Highest 300 DL, Cox Green Meadow on 11.7.13 Other than Heysham LNR where numbers were low, other transects had increases. Gait Barrows Wardens route had the best count since 1995; Martin Mere, Myers Allotment and Warton Crag LNR had their best ever years.

Small White Small White 2009-2013. Blue crosses are 2004-2008. First 23.3.13 PH, Lytham Last 19.10.13 AH, Highest 130 KF, Aintree The highest count (from the same site as 2012) more than doubled. This indicates what a phenomenal year it was for the Small White. On the transects, Martin Mere had the best season since 1995. Arnside Knott, had a huge increase - the best count ever. Gait Barrows nearly doubled the previ- ous best count on the BMS route, and nearly trebled it on the Wardens walk. Myers Allotment doubled their previous best count, Jack Scout had a huge increase to break previ- ous highs and Heysham LNR had their 2nd best ever count. At Warton Crag, no records were broken but both the RSPB and LNR sections increased well, with the best numbers since 1997 on the LNR. There were also none seen at Gait Barrows BMS and Arnside Knott. At Gait Barrows Wardens, things were rather better with an average count. Why these should have fared better than Warton Crag is odd - transect coverage is not responsible. All in all, not a great year - not surprising given the cold spring. White-letter Hairstreak

13 Annual Moth Report covering 2013

This Report covers all records of the micro-moths and macro-moths received up to the end of December 2013. General summary January to April Within a week of the start of the New Year, twenty species of moth had made an appearance including such regulars as Dotted Border in Flixton, Pale Brindled Beauty in Preston and Mottled Umber in Billinge and Mill Houses. The latter site also produced Early Moth and Spring Usher, while over-wintering Red-green Carpet were tempted out by the mild temperatures at a few locations such as in Belmont, accompanied by a Satellite. Other moths included Chesnut, Dark Chestnut, the newly established Mompha bradleyi in Flixton, Depressaria heraclei in Heysham and a most unexpected migrant Plutella xylostella (diamond-back moth) in . Apart from a few scattered records of Dotted Border from sheltered wooded areas, over-wintering indoor micros, and a brave Hebrew Character in Flixton, few moths were present over the first two weeks of February. Temperatures lifted slightly mid- month with a Fox Moth larva at Hightown Dunes, three Small Brindled Beauty, 31 Pale Brindled Beauty and 9 March Moth at light in Mill Houses and 26 Dotted Border at Burton Wood. March fared little better with numbers well down on the usual counts. Some moths were beginning to stir by mid-April. At Mill Houses 212 Small Quaker came to light, while elsewhere Tawny Pin- ion appeared from hibernation at Walmer Bridge and Grey Shoulder-knot in Yealand Conyers. Common Quakers were still well down in numbers but 66 were found at Mere Sands Wood. Oak Beauty is one of those moths that can appear quite widely in the county when conditions are suitable but in 2013 numbers were down by about a half from the norm. BAP (Biodiversity Action Plan) monitoring started in April with Barred Tooth-striped records from five sites on the Silverdale limestone, a reasonable count for this probably under-recorded species in this area. In stark contrast, the Belted Beauty, had a disastrous season presumably due to the prolonged cold weather and didn’t even make an appearance until late April. The maximum seen on any one day was 5 in late April and the annual organised count produced none at all. May to July Caloptilia populetorum was added to the county list when one came to light in Flixton (see summary of this and other new species for full details) while the rare Pammene argyrana was found on an oak trunk at Astley Moss, both of these in May. Other moths of interest included Square Spot at Silverdale Moss, Emperor Moth in Calderbrook and Winmarleigh Moss, a Mullein moth in Yealand Conyers, ten Agonopterix yeatiana in Formby and Alder Kitten in Carnforth. With the arrival of June, moths were beginning to appear in slightly better numbers although many were quite late emerging. Silver Hook was found in Billinge, Hoghton, Middleton and Ainsdale, Oblique Carpet was netted on Birkdale Beach and Grey Scalloped Bar was found in . Interestingly, seven Ash Pug were found at four sites in VC60 (North Lancashire), while another species appearing in increasing numbers, Heart and Club, managed 49 separate sightings, peaking at 16 on one night in Formby. It is now well established in several parts of lowland and coastal Lancashire, particularly the south. In mid-June, ten Cistus Forester were found on Warton Crag with Pseudoswammerdamia combinella turning up at the same site a little later - one of only two known sites for the latter species in the county. Burnet Companion did well at Heysham Nature Reserve this year as did Shaded Pug, a pug that has not been seen in the county away from the Heysham area since 1994. Batrachedra pinicolella came to light in Formby, while a little further north in Ainsdale there were records of Epinotia rubiginosana, eight Grass Rivulet, 22 Eyed Hawk Moth and 34 Brown Rustic. The Shark was found in Bay Horse and Great San- key, the only records of this moth during 2013. Crambus pratella, a rare moth in Lancashire, continues to appear on the Sefton coast and peaked with five at Formby while the beautiful but very small Elachista gleichenella was found on Myers Allotment, the first record with data for VC60. Triple-spotted Clay, was new to a well-recorded garden in Flixton towards the end of June. Around this time an intriguing set of records of Least Minor was reported, firstly in good numbers from its usual haunts at Yealand Hall Allotments. The big surprise however was when it was also found in light traps well away from its nor- mally very restricted habitat requirements at Middleton Nature Reserve and south west of Preston at Walmer Bridge. A day visit to the St. Annes local nature reserve produced a new county record with three Elachista eleochariella flying in the damp dune slacks while signs of larval feeding of Agonopterix nanatella were on Carline Thistle in the dryer parts of the dunes. Else- where, seventy two Dog’s Tooth came to light in Ainsdale, around one hundred Chimney Sweeper were found in Yarrow Val- ley, Obscure Wainscot came to light in Great Sankey and Scarce Silver-lines was found in a Fulwood, Rochdale, Adlington, Woolton, Ellenbrook, Leighton Moss and Longton. Other local moths seen in good numbers this July included Broad-barred White (found at ten sites) and Beautiful hook-tip, found at eight widely scattered sites. The Goat Moth remains a rare moth and only three records of this national BAP species were reported during 2013, from Altcar and Formby, the former site also producing Ruddy Highflyer. Another species of na- tional concern is the V-moth. In 2013 there were 16 records from six localities, an encouraging total, all in the Silverdale area. It appears that we are becoming a nationally important region for this rapidly declining moth. In complete contrast, the Silky Wainscot is continuing to expand its range across the county with records from fourteen localities spread across the county. The most exciting find in early July was Gypsonoma oppressana in Chorlton, a new species for the county. 2013 was an average year for Humming-bird Hawk Moth with eleven reports, the first in Lytham in early July and the last in

14 October, shown on BBC televison’s Autumnwatch, at Leighton Moss. Beautiful Snout had a reasonable year with records from , Lord’s Lot Wood and Adlington. Other very local species included Small Ranunculus at Fazakerly, Striped Wainscot at Heysham, Bactra furfurana at Carleton, Dark Tussock in Ainsdale and two Round-winged Muslin in Great Sankey. One moth expanding its range is the Marbled White Spot, now regular in south west Manchester and occasional in Crosby. During 2013 it was new to Formby and, remarkably, Yealand Conyers in north Lancashire during mid-July. As July progressed, interesting records continued to pour in of local species and also particularly high numbers of some moths. The former included Donacaula forficella from Rishton, Grapholita funebrana at Hough Green, Small Blood-vein in St. Annes and Satin Wave at Jack Scout. Of the latter 14 Lime-speck Pug, 62 Crambus perlella and a whopping 236 White-line Dart were found near Heysham sea port. Other species of note in July included Reddish Light Arches in Yealand Conyers, the Forester (another of our BAP species), peaking at 21 in Ainsdale, Monochroa tetragonella and Elachista scirpi at (the latter not seen in Lancashire since the 19th Century), Lyme Grass in Formby and Altcar and Scarce Silver Y from Calderbrook and Rochdale. July was definitely the month of the year and continued to provide plenty of interest. Eleven of the nationally local Double Dart, accompanied by 15 Blackneck came to light at Heysham NR. Monochroa lucidella was found for the first time in a well recorded garden in Preston. Grey Scalloped Bar wandered from its normal moorland habitat to appear in a Swinton garden and Muslin Footman appeared in large numbers at its usual sites in north Lancashire as well as wandering further afield to Preston (2 sites), Houghton, , Worsthorne and Rochdale. In recent years the mass emergence of Water Veneer (Acentria ephemerella) has become a rare sight so a report of 500 in Billinge was good to receive. Light trapping at Sunderland Point produced 7 Garden Tiger and 3 Crescent Striped while 200 Common Footman were found in Rindle Wood. The macromoth highlight at this time was a Pimpinel Pug found at Heysham Nature Reserve, the first confirmed record for VC60. Around this time, Lunar Hornet Moth was observed egg-laying in Inskip and the usually rather local and uncommon Agriphila selasella turned up at fourteen sites, many for the first time; a count of 102 was made at Sunderland Point. Towards the end of July, a search of ragwort heads at Fairhaven dunes around dusk pro- duced good numbers of various species including over 30 Bryotropha senectella, while a Deep Brown Dart was found in Bolton and eight Blomer’s Rivulet came to light in the Warton (north Lancs) area. August to December It has been a year or two since the Large Yellow Underwing plagued our moth traps, but a return to normal service came when 590 were found in one trap in the wilds of north Lancashire in early August. A peak count of Straw Underwing also occurred on this date with 65 in the trap at Heysham. Elsewhere, in various parts of the county, there were unusually large counts of Cres- cent, Dotted Clay, Slender Brindle, Double Lobed, Fen Wainscot, Common Wave, Six-striped Rustic, Archers Dart, Portland Moth, Cinnabar, Iron Prominent, Flame Shoulder, Small Square-spot, Square-spot Rustic and Dunbar – the list went on and on and culminated in a count of 250 Buff Footman on Docker Moor. These sorts of numbers have been unprecedented in recent years. 2013 proved a good year for Dark Marbled Carpet with confirmed records from twenty sites, including surprisingly some low- land and coastal localities. Blue-bordered Carpet also did well with records from eight sites. In contrast, Bordered Pug has had several poor years away from its strongholds in south Lancashire, the only VC60 record being three in St Annes. Likewise, Bor- dered Beauty struggled a bit with records from only eight localities. Dissections of ear moth type moths this year have proved why it is so necessary to critically examine all of this group. Records of Saltern Ear were made well away from its usual haunts, including a totally unexpected one from Rochdale, and Crinan Ear from both Burn Moor and Morecambe highlight the need to aggregate non-dissected specimens. Other moths of interest in the first few weeks of August included a wandering Fen Wain- scot in Adlington, Bedstraw Hawk Moths in Heysham and Eccles, Pale Eggar at and a Beech Green Carpets at Gait Bar- rows and Mill Houses. Brown-veined Wainscot is a very local species in Lancashire only found in the south of the county. This is as far north as it gets nationally, on the west side of the UK. Since the turn of this century only eight individuals have been reported, so it was good to receive records of four in 2013 at Great Sankey and Abram, the latter accompanied by two Butterbur. Another exciting find was a Black Arches in Southport, quickly followed by the first for VC60 at Mill Houses, one at Leighton Moss (accompanied by a Hedge Rustic), one in Silverdale and rounded off with another at Mill Houses. Elsewhere Gynnidomorpha vectisana was new to VC59 at Marshside and Waved Black was located in the same underpass at Carnforth Station as two in 2008 – and by the same recorder, while Devon Carpet, Bleached Pug (new to VC59) and Poplar Kitten came to light in Formby. From mid to late August a few migrants made an appearance at scattered lowland and coastal sites across the county, mainly comprised of Rush Veneer, Rusty-dot Pearl and Dark Sword-grass, but also Palpita vitrealis in Bispham and a Gem in Flixton. Local residents of note included Pretty Chalk Carpet in St. Annes (for the first time and well beyond its normal range), July Belle in Formby, and Grey Chi in Warton (north Lancs) and Morecambe. Tissue was found in Jackhouse, five Old Lady in Great San- key, Agriphila latistria and Cacoecimorpha pronubana in Rishton, Aroga velocella in Bispham, Devon Carpet at Leighton Moss and ten Barred Chestnuts at Warton Crag. The final BAP monitoring of 2013 produced a very healthy total of 558 larvae of the Netted Carpet in September. Other moths of interest found at this time included Bedelia somnulentella in Aintree, Caloptilia cucculipennella at two Silverdale sites (new to Lancashire), Caloptilia populetorum at light in Chorlton and a leaf-mine on buckthorn of Stigmella catharticella at Heysham. One feature of late summer and autumn this year was the somewhat late records of several species including Pale Eggar at

15 Leck Fell, a Drinker Moth in Ainsdale and Algedonia terrealis in Flixton. Other very late or second brood individuals recorded in late September or well into October included Small Phoenix at Mill Houses, Heart and Dart at Sunderland Point, Silver-ground Carpet at Adlington, Mottled Rustic in VC59, Clouded-bordered Brindle in Burnley, Flame Carpet at Fulwood, Small Dusty Wave, Riband Wave and Light Emerald in Preston, Haworth’s Minor in 10km square SD66, Green Carpet in Flixton and a really late Burnished Brass in Southport on the 17th October. As September came to a close, there were early sightings of our late season species such as Figure of Eight in Carnforth and December Moth at Mill Houses, accompanied by a small influx of mi- grants including Convolvulus Hawk Moth in and a Rush Veneer in Fulwood. October sightings of note included Beaded Chestnut in Preston (the first time in many years), two Brindled Ochre in Formby, Dusky Lemon Sallow in Flixton, Monopis crocicapitella in West Derby (a new record for VC59) and twenty-one Herald found hibernating in Oswaldtwistle. The rest of October really belonged to the migrants. Udea ferrugalis (rusty-dot pearl) was thin on the ground with records from four sites, Nomophila noctuella (rush veneer) was recorded from ten sites and Dark Sword- grass from twelve sites, mostly coastal. Vestal and Gems were found at four sites each, Delicate at Sunderland Point, Scarce Bordered Straw at Heysham and Sunderland Point and a Convolvulus Hawk Moth at Heysham. Good counts of moths continued late into the season with many records received of December Moth, Mottled and Scarce Um- ber, Winter Moth and Red-green Carpet. Pre hibernation records of species such as Chestnut, Dark Chestnut, Red Sword- grass, Satellite, Pale and Tawny Pinion were a little on the low side. There were late records of Common Marbled Carpet, Large Yellow Underwing, Large Wainscot, Blair’s Shoulder Knot and Snout as well as early records of Dotted Border and Pale Brindled Beauty. Even the migrants kept going with November records of Udea ferrugalis and Dark Sword-grass. We can but hope that 2014 provides the moths with an opportunity to bounce back from the previous few years of decline.

Hancock VC60 Changes to the County Moth Recorders and Moth Recording Team Steve Palmer Graham Jones stepped down as County Macro-moth Recorder at the end of October 2013. At the end of December 2013, both Kevin McCabe and Steve Palmer also stood down as we felt it was time for a change and a well-earned break after fifteen years running the Lancashire Moth Group, sorting and digitising the fantastic 1.23 million moth records now in the Mapmate database and many other mothy duties. We both now hope to be able to devote more time to the study of moths in Lanca- shire and elsewhere in the British Isles. We’d like to thank all those who we’ve worked alongside during that time including fellow County Moth Recorders Simon Hayhow, Chris Darbyshire and Graham Jones. Elsewhere in this Report you will read about those now taking up the reigns and I wish them all success in their endeavours. Please keep the records coming in, with Date, Location, Grid Reference (to six figures if poss.), Recorder and Determiner. Please note that records posted on Yahoo or Twitter sites should be submitted as above to the County Recorders listed below. The changes to the county recorders are listed below and please note that, at present, there is no Micro-moth Recorder for VC59.
