Whereas the New York Yankees are the most successful franchise in the history of Major League Baseball; Whereas prior to this year the Yankees had won 26 World Series Championships, the most in the Major Leagues; Whereas this historic franchise is located in the Bronx and is known as the ‘‘Bronx Bombers’’; Whereas the Yankees franchise has included all-time great players; Whereas for many years the Yankees played baseball in the historic Yankee Stadium; Whereas this year the Yankees opened a new stadium and hope to emulate the success achieved in the ‘‘House that Ruth Built’’; Whereas during the 2009 regular season, the Yankees had the best record in baseball, going 103–59; Whereas the Yankees finished at the top of the American League East Division; Whereas the Yankees went on to beat the Minnesota Twins 3 games to 0; 2 Whereas the Yankees then faced off against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the American League Champion- ship Series, and emerged victorious in 6 games; Whereas that victory represented the 40th American League Pennant that the Yankees have won; Whereas the Yankees were matched up against a valiant Philadelphia Phillies squad for the World Series title; Whereas the Yankees were able to defeat the defending World Series Champions by 4 games to 2; Whereas this victory represents the Yankees’ 27th World Se- ries Championship win; Whereas this number of championship wins is 17 more than their next closest competitor; Whereas the contributions of the Yankees’ players throughout the season were all vital in securing the title; and Whereas the Yankees were guided to victory by Manager Joe Girardi, General Manager Brian Cashman, President Randy Levine, and the leadership of Hank and Hal Steinbrenner: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives congratu- lates— (1) the 2009 Major League Baseball World Series Champions, the New York Yankees, for an outstanding season and a record 27th World Series Championship win; and •HRES 893 EH 3 (2) the players, coaches, staff and leadership of the Yankees organization for their great success. By: Jack Greiner on December 16, 2020 on graydon.law The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is considering whether a letter from Rob Manfred to New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman should be sealed. The letter was part of a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York filed by fantasy baseball players who contended that the league and the teams should be liable for the losses of those who bet on games that may have been tainted by electronic sign-stealing. The trial court threw out the lawsuit, but before it did, it ruled the letter was irrelevant. But the trial court ruled that the letter could be released to the public. And the Yankees are not happy about it, evidenced by their suit in the Second Circuit. The Yankees argue that because the court ruled the letter irrelevant, it’s none of the public’s business. The fantasy players argued that Manfred’s letter, which concerned a 2015 incident where MLB fined Boston for illegally using an Apple watch to relay signs to players. In the fantasy players’ view, the letter showed that MLB knew the cheating was occurring, didn’t stop it and let bettors to wager money without knowing the results were tainted. We’ll see if the Yankees have any success with this. But they are confusing two concepts. While the letter may be irrelevant for purposes of the lawsuit, that ruling doesn’t put it off limits to the public.

Bad Behavior George Herman "Babe Ruth" was born February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents owned a saloon near the current site of Camden Yards in Baltimore. They were of German descent and taught him to speak German fluently. George was actually somewhat of a petty criminal as a young boy. By age seven he was already involved in drinking alcohol and chewing tobacco. Because he was too difficult for his parents to control, George was sent away to a catholic school. It was here, where Brother Matthias taught him baseball. As a teenager, George became the team's catcher and then pitcher. Unusual Talent At the age of 19 Jack Dunn, a scout for the Orioles discovered George's baseball talents. He was promptly signed to pitch for the Orioles. After performing well as a pitcher and a batter for the Orioles during spring training, George made the team. Because he was such a young talent, he earned the nickname "Babe". On April 22, 1914, Babe pitched a shutout against the Buffalo Bisons in his Major-League debut. Because the Orioles were in poor financial shape, Jack Dunn was forced to sell off his best players. Babe was sold to the Boston Red Sox in 1914 for an amount between $20,000 and $35,000. Called up to the Majors After pitching for the Red Sox minor league club in Providence, Rhode Island, Babe was called up to the majors permanently toward the end of the 1914 baseball season.

Butterworth Baseball was among the most prominent American institutions to respond to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Tributes at ballparks across the country promised comfort to millions in shock but soon developed into rituals of victimization that affirmed the Bush administration’s politics of war, discouraged the expression of dissenting opinions, and burdened the nation with yet another disincentive to reflect constructively on its response to terrorism. This essay views the aftermath of 9/11 as a quasi-religious social drama in which ballpark tributes became a ritualized vehicle for a belligerent patriotism that sought unity at the expense of democratic discourse. Keywords: Baseball; Democracy; Patriotism; War on Terrorism; Rituals of Victimization On October 12, 2003, the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins played in the fifth game of baseball’s National League Championship Series. Thousands of Chicago fans, hoping to see their team end a 58-year World Series drought, made their way to Miami’s Pro Player Stadium and provided loyal and raucous support for the visiting Cubs. When the game reached the seventh-inning stretch, Cubs fans enthusiastically began singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” but they were quickly silenced by the stadium’s public address system and the remaining fans who belted out “God Bless America” instead. Casey Duncan* INTRODUCTION In 1998 U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) entered into an agreement with Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league governing the transaction of non-free agent players be- tween the two leagues. This United States-Japanese Player Contract Agreement, also known as "The Posting System Agreement" (Posting System) is designed to regulate such inter- national player transactions and to protect the interests of both leagues. While the Posting System has had some initial success, recent developments make its long-term success as a solution suspect. It is the purpose of this note to examine critically the Posting System in light of these developments, and to suggest possible changes to better effectuate its goals and protect the in- terests of both leagues and their players.
