All compositions on the record are by Iro Haarla. Saxophonist/flutist Juhani Aaltonen and pianist/harpist Iro Haarla first collaborated in drummer/composer Edward Vesala’s various ensembles in the late 1970s and early 1980s appearing on many of Vesala’s most important recordings. Aaltonen, Haarla and Vesala also performed together as the Edward Vesala Trio in 1983. Aaltonen and Haarla picked up their collaboration when Juhani Aaltonen formed his much praised quartet by expanding his trio in 2008 with the addition of Haarla on the piano and harp (Conclusions, TUM CD 021, and To Future Memories, TUM CD 036). Aaltonen and Haarla have also occasionally performed as a duo but Kirkastus marks their first duo recording and presents a new height for their collaborations. On Kirkastus, Aaltonen and Haarla play exclusively Haarla’s compositions with the mood ranging from quiet contemplation to powerful crescendos. Most of the compositions were composed specifically for this recording with a number of them inspired by Haarla’s favorite Psalms.

  • James Holden's New Live Touring Incarnation (In Support of Holden's 2013 Album 'The Inheritors')
RocketNumberNine biography In the two years that have elapsed since the 2013 release of their second RocketNumberNine album 'MeYouWeYou', London-born brothers Ben and Tom Page have found themselves much in demand, to the point where their original RocketNumberNine pet project has had to take something of a back seat. A hook up with Smalltown Supersound labelmate and Swedish singing superheroine Neneh Cherry saw the Page siblings drafted in to provide the synth and drum complement to her Kieran Hebden-produced 'Blank Project' album in early 2014, leading on to RocketNumberNine's permanent installation as her backing band on the subsequent Neneh Cherry tour. And not content with one round the world trip, younger brother Tom has somehow also found the time to moonlight as drummer for modular synth maestro James Holden's new live touring incarnation (in support of Holden's 2013 album 'The Inheritors'). But now, as one set of touring cycles near their natural end, and with a crisp new RocketNumberNine 12” poised to emerge on Holden's Border Community label in the Autumn of 2015, the time has come for the brothers to refocus their attention on the symbiotic RocketNumberNine improvisational partnership where it all began. Growing up together in Chingford in the North Eastern outskirts of London, nestled just inside the M25, it was eight years ago that brothers Ben and Tom Page first formalised their musical union as synth-and- drum improv duo RocketNumberNine. But their dedication to one another runs way deeper than most siblings, having also lived together for most of their adult lives, including a spell together in a musical commune near Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland.

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

South African Festivals in the United States: An Expression of Policies, Power and Networks DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Akhona Ndzuta, MA Graduate Program in Arts Administration, Education and Policy The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee: Karen E. Hutzel, Ph.D. Wayne P. Lawson, Ph.D. Margaret J. Wyszomirski, Ph.D., Advisor Copyright by Akhona Ndzuta 2019 Abstract This research is a qualitative case study of two festivals that showcased South African music in the USA: the South African Arts Festival which took place in downtown Los Angeles in 2013, and the Ubuntu Festival which was staged at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2014. At both festivals, South African government entities such as the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), as well as the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) were involved. Due to the cultural, economic and other mandates of these departments, broader South African government policy interests were inadvertently represented on foreign soil. The other implication is that since South African culture was central to these events, it was also key to promoting these acultural policy interests. What this research sets out to do is to explore how these festivals promote the interests of South African musicians while furthering South African government interests, and how policy was an enabler of such an execution. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust and the National Arts Council of South Africa for their generous funding in the first two years of my studies.
