Dedication In grateful remembrance of his interest and services to the University, we dedicate this, the fourth volume o f G umbo to Mr. Jo h n H ill donor o f the Hill Memorial Library 2 Life of John Hill R. H ILL was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, March 12, 1824. He comes of an old family, being a direct descendant of one of the Scotch Covenanters who fought at Rothwell Bridge. He came to America in 1844, when the country was passing through a great commercial crisis. Landing at N e w York, he traveled through the North and West, as well as through Canada, and finding everywhere the same commercial depression, he came South in 1845 with the intention of returning to his home. H ere in N ew Orleans he saw the first signs o f prosperity. Being attracted by the possibilities which he saw that the country possessed, he changed his mind and decided to remain here. He came to Baton Rouge in 1849, and here engaged in the foundry business, for which he had an inherited taste. In 1851 he married Miss Catherine McPhail, of Glasgow, Scotland. When the Federal fleet shelled the town of Baton Rouge nearly all of Mr. Hill’s property was destroyed. He crossed over to West Baton Rouge immediately after the bombardment, and on account of the destruction of his property he became a planter. He has followed this occupation ever since, and has always performed his full duty towards the upbuilding of the State. His assistance to the Atchafalaya Levee District was'great and of lasting results. During the session ’01-’02, Mr. Hill gave to the University the sum of $25,000 to be used in erecting a library building. This amount was afterwards increased by $8,000, making a total of $33,000. T h is one act is an index to the character o f John H ill— a man o f good purposes and generous deeds. In every way his life has been an example of advancement by merit, of sturdy self-reliance and of duty well done. 5 6 The Gumbo Board of 1903 presents this, the fourth volume of Gumbo in behalf of the students and friends of the Louisiana State U niversity 7 Session 1902 = 1903 Session opens ....
