Red Allen & Frank Wakefield WDON Recordings 1963is a collection of 22 tracks featuring Red Allan on guitar and vocals, Frank Wakefield on mandolin and vocals, Pete Kuykendall on banjo and vocals and Tom Morgan on bass and vocals. The liner notes tell the story... Red Allen, Frank Wakefield, Pete Kuykendall and Tom Morgan. These names epitomize all that is meaningful in the world of bluegrass music. The pedigrees of Harley "Red" Allen and Franklin Delano Wakefield have been well documented. Red is justly regarded as the quintessential bluegrass singer. Raw, emotive, tender when necessary; he ranks as one of the most powerful singers this music has produced. Frank Wakefield remains the true preserver of Bill Monroe's definitive understanding of how bluegrass mandolin ought to be played and has furthered his unequalled knowledge of the Monroe doctrine with an enriched vocabulary of Baroque and Classical explorations. But what has not been fully documented were the significant contributions of band mates Pete Kuykendall and Tom Morgan. Collectively. this outstanding ensemble contributed some ofthe most lasting and memorable testaments within the bluegrass idiom. Theirs was a music of passion and conviction. The availability of only one commercial recording of this band has now been addressed and serves to illuminate the prominence of these gifted performers. In 1963, Red, Frank. Pete and Tom gathered in Mr. Kuykendall's Falls Church, Virginia home studio for what turned out to be a successful relationship with radio station WDON - 1540 AM in Wheaton, Maryland. -

If you drive through downtown Rockville, the courthouse square and surrounding shopping district have been spiffily gentrified. But once you cross over the Metro line into East Rockville, you're in an industrial area of tire lots, wholesaler offices, and storage units. One of those units, though, has been converted into a state-of-the-art recording studio. Both Patuxent Music, the record label, and Patuxent Studios, the studio, are housed in a long, two-story, white-stucco storage area. Up in the attic are cardboard boxes full of CDs that demonstrate the label's breadth. The roster is dominated by bluegrass artists--both legendary old-timers such as Frank Wakefield and the Stonemans and up-and-comers such as Darren Beachley and Tatiana Hargreaves. Also represented are the blues, jazz, and roots rock. Downstairs in the dim light of the control room, leaning back in his padded, black producer's chair before the big digital board is Tom Mindte, the founder/owner of both the studio and label. The 53-year-old musician is a big, round man in a black polo shirt, amber-frame glasses, graying red hair, and a soft voice. -

Q&A with Katy Daley – Tom Mindte Posted on April 21, 2017 by Katy Daley Tom Mindte, head of Patuxent Music and bandleader of Patuxent Partners, stores an extensive record collection at his studio in Rockville, Maryland. I asked him how his interest in collecting and music got started. TM: Dad had a heating and air conditioning company, which is still going to this day. A lot of times people didn’t have any money to have their heat fixed so they would barter. One time he fixed someone’s heat and they gave him a crank-up Victrola full of records. About three-quarters of the records were in German and there were a few Hawaiian records in there, too. They were really cool because they had Hawaiian guitar which sounded like a Dobro. There were also some vocal records from the ‘20s and I just loved that. I was fascinated and I played those records over and over. There are still a few of them here at the studio. I was about 8 years old then. When I got a little older I would go around to antique stores and record stores and buy records because I was going to be a record collector when I grew up. And I’m still going to be one when I grow up. I loved 78s because of the history of them and they would spin around real fast. KD: How did you start playing music? TM: My mother’s parents, Margaret and Ed Hohmann, were both musicians. Grandpa played the fiddle and clarinet. -

Banjo Greats Gather at Grey Fox for Keith-Style Banjo Summit

Photo by Fred Robbins BANJO GREATS GATHER AT GREY FOX FOR KEITH-STYLE BANJO SUMMIT Surely a highlight of this year’s Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival will be a very special Keith-Style Banjo Summit hosted by Béla Fleck and Tony Trischka. As if this “Triple Crown of Banjo” wasn’t enough, joining them on stage to honor the music and enormous influence of Bill Keith will be the award-winning Noam Pikelny, Eric Weissberg, Mike Munford, Marc Horowitz, Mike Kropp, and Ryan Cavanaugh, along with Bill Keith himself. The 90-minute Keith-style banjo gathering will be on Friday, July 17 beginning at 7:00pm at the Creekside Stage. Banjoist extraordinaire Bill Keith (beaconbanjo.com) is one of just a handful of musicians to have a whole style named after him. The Keith style was the catalyst that spawned new generations of envelope pushers such as Tony Trischka, Béla Fleck and Noam Pikelny. Bill has worked with The Jim Kweskin Jugband, Jim Rooney, Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Judy Collins, Clarence White, Richard Greene and David Grisman. His 1963 Decca recordings with Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys introduced his innovations to a world audience. Bill also wrote the Earl Scruggs banjo instruction book. Last October, the IBMA honored Bill with a richly deserved Distinguished Achievement Award.
