Parish Groups Are Involved in the Display Glenelg Catholic Parish 1st November 2020 All Saints John Herd PP In the month of November we remember those who have died. We express our connection with them even though we are separated by the distance of death. In the Spirit we reach out to them with warm concern and a desire to be united. Most of all we express our desire that we will one day be united with them in full happiness with God, when every tear will be wiped away. On Monday 2nd November we will have Mass at 7pm at OLV and bring our departed loved ones in prayer to God. At the Mass we join our prayer with the self-offering of Jesus to the Father. The Holy Spirit brings us to a greater unity with Christ, with our loved ones and with each other. We experience this especially in the Eucharist. We speak of the ‘communion of saints’ in the Creed which refers to a profound bond of connection and belonging. It is a connection which bridges the divide caused by death which can inspire and motivate us. Though we are limited and bound by death, we have reason for hope and joy because our destiny is to share in communion with God and with all the saints. The feast of All Saints reminds us of the multitudes of people who have walked this earth and have in some way reflected the life of God. They may have lived a generous life of love in their family; or endured suffering or challenge; or obtained God’s forgiveness and shown God’s mercy to others. In this feast of All Saints we can see the vision of our destiny to be with them in God’s company. The Gospel reading this Sunday is the Beatitudes, which Pope Francis has described as the Christian’s passport. Here Jesus says who are truly blessed, truly happy: the poor in spirit, the merciful, pure in heart, the peacemakers etc. In contrast the values of this world call us to be proud and strong, tough and determined, and to secure many possessions. As we continue our pilgrim journey we can give thanks for those many saints who have lived Christ’s way, we remember with love those gone ahead of us, and we seek to help each other follow the path of the Beatitudes. Aren’t we blessed in belonging to this pilgrim people on our journey to heaven? GLENELG PARISH - PASTORAL COUNCIL REPORT The following is a summary of the main items at the Parish Pastoral Council held on Tuesday 27th October 2020 at St Dominic’s Hall, Glenelg. Groups in the Parish: Paul Hay and Gary Lyons shared the story of the Men’s Shed, a joint initiative of the Glenelg and Plympton Parishes. The Men’s Group gathers each Wednesday, morning in the double garage (now extended) of the former presbytery of the Plympton Parish. Items made include: Christmas cribs, building blocks, a memorial garden seat and a 1000 beautiful Hand Crosses while also growing tomatoes and pumpkins. Most important outcome has been the fellowship and camaraderie that the men enjoy while engaged in making or doing something or talking over a cuppa. New members are always very welcome. Another of the ‘hidden’ treasures of our parish. Voice of the Community: The meeting started with the reading of today’s gospel and reflection on its message. In this Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples and teaches them to rejoice and be glad for your reward will be great in heaven even when people abuse you and persecute you. We reflected that this was not easy to do when one is bullied or abused, or sad and also highlights the human goodness to be found and evident in times of adversity. Being with those who are grieving at our Memorial Mass on Monday night when we remember those in our parish community who have died this year. The establishment of new groups with parishioners taking up the invitations offered by Fr John has brought with it a sense of renewal, with people feeling more welcomed. A great credit to Fr John and his leadership. Parish Life: The Sacramental program is underway with 50 children preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation this term with their parents involved in the journey with the children. Fr Anthony’s Retirement Farewell: Friday, 6 November, St Mary’s Hall. Two sittings: from 5-6 pm and 7-8 pm. $10 entry fee to cover catering costs. Booking essential as numbers are limited due to Covid restrictions, online: https://www.trybooking.com/BMDOK or please ring the Parish Office, 8294 1888. St Dominic’s Centre: Melbourne Cup Lunch, Tuesday 3rd November, 12.30 pm. Booking is essential. See Bulletin for details. Art Show in St Mary’s Hall: Gary Lyons spoke about planning for this event on Friday 27 and 28 November. Various parish groups are involved in the display. Look for details in the Bulletin soon. Schools: A busy Term 4 is underway for both schools who are doing wonderful work with students and in the community. OLOG: Debbie Scuteri, is currently Acting Principal, while Josette Charles is on long service leave. St Mary’s Memorial School’s new building will be blessed and officially opened this week with Archbishop Patrick O’Regan, Prof Denis Ralph (Chair, South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools and Dr Neil McGoran, Director of Catholic Education South Australia, in attendance. Financial Report: Operating surplus at the end of September stands at $29,811.12. This is largely due to your on-going contributions to the Planned Thanksgiving program, Job Keeper and no Co-responsibility payments to the Archdiocese. Thank you for your generosity and support. Jo Coonan, Glenelg Parish Pastoral Council Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Grace and peace I hope that this note finds you well. I would like to take a little of your time to speak of a very important issue that you may not be fully aware of and which requires urgent action on the part of our Catholic community. A Bill entitled Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2020 is now before the SA Legislative Council, and it is the intention of the Deputy Premier that it be passed by both Houses of Parliament before the end of the year. Unlike the current legislation, this Bill allows for abortion up until birth. There is no protection for a viable baby who would otherwise be delivered alive, other than requiring the consent of two doctors.

  • JOHNSON Gregory Nuclear Review
Honourable Jay Weatherill Greg Johnson Premier of South Australia Contact Details Removed The Premier's Office Contact Details Removed 5018 15th floor Contact Details Removed State Administration Centre 12th February 2015 200 Victoria Square Adelaide SA 5000 Risk assessments and issues which need to be thoroughly investigated and publically reported on by the South Australian Government Royal Commission into expanding South Australia's involvement into key elements of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle I would like to introduce my concerns by asking what 'facts' are to be included and what 'facts' are to be omitted in the Commission's terms of reference? It appears from the contradictory comments from the head of the Commission, Kevin Scarce, 'I know the dangers of the (nuclear) industry' and 'how do we convince South Australians that it is safe and what are the benefits of so doing?', that Kevin does not come to his appointment with an open mind. It seems Kevin already knows what's best for us. On the contrary, history demonstrates the nuclear industry does not have a clean safety record! It has also been prone to secrecy and of distorting the 'facts'. We need to remind ourselves that civil nuclear programs worldwide were born out of and have continued to be connected to military / industrial complexes. We also need to be conscious of the 'fact' that over time governments and their members are replaced; some by degrees of democratic process, some through corruption and some by direct or imminent force. You only have to look at the contemporary world to witness changes in circumstances, context, creed, character, type, priorities, policies, practices and behaviours of political parties, leaderships and oppositional groups, to conclude we live in and will likely continue to live in uncertain times.

  • Todd Farrell Thesis
The Australian Greens: Realignment Revisited in Australia Todd Farrell Submitted in fulfilment for the requirements of the Doctorate of Philosophy Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Health, Arts and Design School of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities 2020 ii I declare that this thesis does not incorporate without acknowledgement any material previously submitted for a degree in any university or another educational institution and to the best of my knowledge and belief it does not contain any material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text. iii ABSTRACT Scholars have traditionally characterised Australian politics as a stable two-party system that features high levels of partisan identity, robust democratic features and strong electoral institutions (Aitkin 1982; McAllister 2011). However, this characterisation masks substantial recent changes within the Australian party system. Growing dissatisfaction with major parties and shifting political values have altered the partisan contest, especially in the proportionally- represented Senate. This thesis re-examines partisan realignment as an explanation for party system change in Australia. It draws on realignment theory to argue that the emergence and sustained success of the Greens represents a fundamental shift in the Australian party system. Drawing from Australian and international studies on realignment and party system reform, the thesis combines an historical institutionalist analysis of the Australian party system with multiple empirical measurements of Greens partisan and voter support. The historical institutionalist approach demonstrates how the combination of subnational voting mechanisms, distinctly postmaterialist social issues, federal electoral strategy and a weakened Labor party have driven a realignment on the centre-left of Australian politics substantial enough to transform the Senate party system.

Death has its gates (Psalm 9.13; 107.18; Isaiah 38.10); and Christ has the keys of these gates. There were those who took this claim—and there still are those who do so—as a reference to the descent into hell (1 Peter 3.18-20). There was a conception in the ancient Church that when Jesus descended into Hades, the region of the dead, He unlocked the doors and brought out from thence Abraham and all God's faithful people who had lived and died in the generations before. But we may take it in an even wider sense than that; for we who are Christians believe that Jesus Christ has authority over death, that He has abolished death and that He has brought life and immortality to light through His glorious gospel (2 Timothy 1.10), that because He lives we shall live also (John 14.19), and that, therefore, for us and for those whom we love the bitterness of death is for ever past.” – The Revelation of John Vol.
