The Olympic Peninsula is the uplifted portion of the Cascadia accretionary wedge and forms the core of a 200 km scale oroclinal bend on the west coast of Washington State. The accretionary wedge started forming 45 million years ago following the accretion of the Siletzia igneous province along the Cascadia subduction margin. Low-temperature thermochronology studies have shown that the core of the peninsula has been continuously exhumed for the last 14 million years. The earlier onset of oroclinal bending, uplift, and emergence remains poorly documented. Here, we explore the Cenozoic drainage history of the Cascadia forearc and accretionary wedge to reconstruct the deformation history of the Olympic Peninsula. We use detrital zircon provenance and grain petrography data from modern rivers draining the Cascades, the Cascadia forearc and accretionary wedge, as well as from Eocene to late middle Miocene sedimentary units from the same areas.

  • Ecology and Habitat Requirements of Fish Populations in South Fork Hoh River, Olympic National Park
Ecology and Habitat Requirements of Fish Populations in South Fork Hoh River, Olympic National Park J.R. Sedell, P.A. Bisson, J.A. June, and R.W. Speaker ABSTRACT Four distinct running water habitats are defined and examined on the South Fork Hoh River--main river channel, river off-channel areas, terrace tributaries, and valley wall tributaries. Species compositions, densities, and total fish biomasses are distinctly different for each habitat examined. Habitat formed by the main river channel and its tributaries is controlled by the valley terrace structure and the modifying effects of large woody debris. Without large wood, spawning and rearing habitat quality would be poorer, even in the large channel. Virtually all rearing of salmonid fish occurs in river off-channel areas and tributaries. The main channel is used mainly for spawning and migration. Fish densities and biomasses are highest in streams along the valley floor. Alteration of these areas will have greatest impact on fish production. J. R. It provides a foundation for further planning to ensure that County leadership, agencies, and citizens are aware and prepared to meet the effects of disasters and emergencies. Incident management cannot be event driven. Through increased awareness and preventive measures, the ultimate goal is to help ensure a unified approach that will lesson vulnerability to hazards over time. The HIVA is not a detailed study, but a general overview of known hazards that can affect Jefferson County. Jefferson County Hazard Identification and Vulnerability Assessment 2011 3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An integrated emergency management approach involves hazard identification, risk assessment, and vulnerability analysis. This document, the Hazard Identification and Vulnerability Assessment (HIVA) describes the hazard identification and assessment of both natural hazards and technological, or human caused hazards, which exist for the people of Jefferson County.

Determining harvest potential in these populations is challenging without a clear understanding of spatiotemporal movement, space use, and spatial overlap. Mountain goat populations in the North Cascades are fragmented and many have declined considerably from historic estimates. Identication of harvestable populations requires a clear understanding of population size, distribution, and movement. We investigated the population trends and spatial distribution of mountain goats in the Boulder River North Harvest Area in Boulder River Wilderness of Washington State. Methods: We reviewed recent mountain goat population estimates and used Global Positioning System collar data to determine year-round and seasonal home range distributions, spatial overlap within these ranges, and proximity of mountain goats to roads and trails. Results: We found 2 populations of mountain goats inhabiting the Whitehorse and Three Fingers Mountains in the Boulder River North Harvest Area.
