We can no longer trust in the unseen forces and the invisible hand of the market. Growth in justice requires more than economic growth, while presupposing such growth: it requires decisions, programmes, mechanisms and processes specifically geared to a better distribution of income, the creation of sources of employment and an integral promotion of the poor which goes beyond a simple welfare mentality. I am far from proposing an irresponsible populism, but the economy can no longer turn to remedies that are a new poison, such as attempting to increase profits by reducing the work force and thereby adding to the ranks of the excluded.

  • Bishop Brendan Leahy
th . World Day of Poor 19 November, 2017 No great economic success story possible as long as homelessness and other poverty crises deepen – Bishop Brendan Leahy Ireland cannot claim itself an economic success while it allows the neglect of its poor, Bishop of Limerick Brendan Leahy has stated in his letter to the people of the diocese to mark the first World Day of the Poor. The letter - read at Masses across the diocese for the official World Day of the Poor called by Pope Francis – says that with homelessness at an unprecedented state of crisis today in Ireland, it is almost unjust and unchristian to claim economic success. “Throughout the centuries we have great examples of outreach to the poor. The most outstanding example is that of Francis of Assisi, followed by many other holy men and women over the centuries. In Ireland we can think of great women such as Catherine McAuley and Nano Nagle. “Today the call to hear the cry of the poor reaches us. In our Diocese we are blessed to have the Limerick Social Services Council that responds in many ways. There are many other initiatives that reach out to the homeless, refugees, people in situations of marginalisation,” he wrote. “But none of us can leave it to be outsourced to others to do. Each of us has to do our part. Today many of us live a privileged life in the material sense compared to generations gone by, Today is Mission Sunday and the Holy Father invites all Catholics to contribute to a special needing pretty much nothing.

  • 1509 Catalyst A5.Indd
Post Primary Education CATALYST PAMPHLET THIRTEEN Foreward Catalyst’s self-appointed task for more than a decade now has been to encourage the Church to be the Church, to examine ourselves to see how our Christian witness measures up to the gospel parameters. We feel that there are areas of life where the great biblical themes of justice and fairplay should be reiterated and realized; justice and fairplay especially for those who do not themselves have a strong voice, for those on the margins or at the bottom of society. One such arena is that of public education. Both in NI and throughout the UK there is much debate about the benefi ts and failures of the present situation and of the reforms which have been implemented over the past half century. There are many criticisms of the outcome of present-day education policy and a good deal of uncertainty about how we can improve it, including a fear that the latter state might be worse than the former. Pressure groups and special-interest groups abound, and often more heat than light is generated. It is our plea that there should be an honest and open examination of the issues, and who is better placed to contribute to this than the Christian churches? They pioneered education, motivated by the wonderful idea that all are children of God the Father who has endowed everyone, but everyone, with skills, talents, intellectual and other abilities. Respectfully we offer the following as points worthy of consideration especially by religiously motivated people: 1 The status quo post the 1944/48 Education Acts meant in NI students emerging from Grammar Schools with very good Senior Certifi cate (GCE) grades and A levels, (better than in GB).

Issue 58 January 2020 Fr Paul Dempsey appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese Pope Francis appointed Father Paul Dempsey, PP of Newbridge Parish in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, as Bishop of the Diocese of Achonry on 27 January. Speaking in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, following the announcement, Father Dermot Meehan, Administrator of Achonry Diocese said, “Today, Father Paul Dempsey comes into our assembly as Christ’s messenger, having accepted his appointment by Pope Francis as pastor of the people and priests of Achonry. We warmly welcome his appointment and, on behalf of the priests, religious and people of the diocese, I thank him for accepting it. It is a reason for rejoicing for us in Achonry that a priest of Father Paul’s calibre and extensive experience in pastoral ministry in his native diocese of Kildare and Leighlin comes to us as our new bishop. We assure him of our prayers as he prepares for his new role and we ask God to bless him with joy, contentment and peace in his ministry among us.” Speaking to the congregation of almost 800, gathered in the cathedral for the announcement, Father Dempsey said, “I’m sure you can understand how daunting it is to take on the role of bishop in a new diocese. I’m conscious of my own unworthiness and sinfulness as I take on this role. I ask you to be patient with me as I endeavour to get to know the priests, people, deacons and religious of the diocese in the coming weeks and months.” The Episcopal Ordination of the new Bishop of Achonry will take place on 19 April 2020, Divine Mercy Sunday.

The First Sunday of Advent is actually the Christian Church’s New Year’s Day. This year – perhaps more than ever – we need more than ever ideas and inspiration to help us delve deeper during our hours of isolation and restriction, to find that glimmer of light, that note of joy, that promise of consolation. The virtual calendar offers ideas to help us spiritually prepare for our Lord’s coming at Christmas with thoughtful reflections as well as challenges for change and conversion. • “Among the Most Catechised but Among the Least Evangelised”? Religious Education in Ireland
“Among the Most Catechised but among the least Evangelised”? Religious Education in Ireland Br e n d a n Le a h y It has been said that the Irish are the most catechised but among the least evangelised in Europe. This article examines the contemporary situation of religious education in Ireland with a particular focus on its ecumenical aspects. It begins by outlining the historical journey in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that led Ireland to the current situation. On that basis it considers some of the issues that have arisen in recent times that have seen a dramatic change in religious practice in Ireland. It explores the issue of the relationship of parish, school and family. Keywords: National education; religious instruction; Vatican II; denominational school- ing; Archbishop Martin Since the coming of Patrick to Ireland in the fifth century, the issue of religious education has been important in Ireland. According to a legend, the Celtic princess Eithne asked Patrick: “Who is God, and where is God, of whom is God and where his dwelling?... This God of yours? Is he ever-living? Is he beautiful...? How will he be seen, how is he loved, how is he found?”1 To respond to questions such as this Patrick evangelised, catechised and inculturated the Gospel faith. And in a remarkably short span of time, there was a Celtic Christian body of poetry and literature. In particular it was the monastic communities that drove the Irish Christian experience of religious education and the transmission of the Christ-event in the first millennium.2 Traces of the Biblia pauperum, the religious education carried out in forms other than the written word, are very evident in Ireland.
