Principal’s Message

Dear Leilehua Families,

Can you believe it, we are at the end of the school year. We would like to thank everyone for their hard work and support of our students this year, it truly takes a village to raise a child.

We have a couple of culminating events left: ● Athletic Banquet, Tuesday, May 16, 2017 @ Leilehua Cafeteria ​ ● Graduation Ceremony, Friday, May 19, 2017 @ Hugh Yoshida ​ Stadium ○ As a reminder, 5/19/17 is a Wednesday Schedule and Study Hall all day for students who may need extra support in preparation for Assessment Week the following week. ○ Seniors and Juniors wanting to participate in the Graduation Ceremony, please remember the HIDOE Commencement Agreement will be enforced during the fourth quarter. Finish the year strong and make good choices.

GUIDELINES FOR A SAFE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Parents and Guests,

Leilehua High School is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our Commencement Exercises. We ask for your full cooperation to ensure that we all enjoy the kind of commencement Exercise that characterizes our Leilehua spirit and pride.

Please be advised that the following rules will be enforced:

1. NO alcoholic beverages. Leis made of alcoholic beverages will NOT be permitted into the stadium. Please be reminded that individuals in possession of open containers of alcohol are subject to arrest.

2. No coolers and/or large bags will be permitted into the stadium.

3. All spectators must stay outside the fenced area of the field until after the graduates have completed the Commencement Recessional. Gates to the field will be opened when the graduates reach to their Alpha stations.

4. In the event of an emergency, police and security personnel will direct guests out of the stadium.

5. In the event of an electrical power outage, or extreme weather event, the Commencement Exercises may be canceled or moved to a different location. An announcement to that effect will be made with a bullhorn.

6. Our seniors have been advised that should a graduate pose a safety hazard, the Commencement Exercises will be cancelled. An announcement to that effect will be made and all guests will be asked to fully cooperate with our directives to insure a safe graduation ceremony setting.

7. Seniors who demonstrate inappropriate behavior will be escorted off the field and forfeit participation in the Commencement Exercises.

8. All graduates and guest are requested to exit the stadium by 8:45 p.m.

Graduates

Graduation services for the Leilehua Class of 2017 will be held at Hugh Yoshida Stadium on the school campus. For the safety of those in attendance, we are requesting that stilettos or any footwear with pointed heels not be worn on the field. In order to maintain the field’s playing surface, no food or gum chewing will be allowed on the field after the commencement ceremony. Alcohol, coolers, and air horns are not allowed in the stadium.

Alternate parking will be available at Wahiawa Middle School. There will be a free shuttle bus running between Wahiawa Middle School and the Leilehua campus from 5:30pm – 6:30pm and 7:30pm – 8:30pm. Reserved handicap parking will be available to those who have a handicap parking placard. To request a reserved handicap parking pass, please call Keri Ann Chock at 305-3110.

Trinity Lutheran School (1611 California Ave.) right above Leilehua will be offering parking for $5.00. Parking will open at 5p.m.

Leilehua High and Waimea High qualify for National Leadership Bowl Championship 12-Apr-2017 After advancing through two phases of online competition against 1,378 teams worldwide, the Leilehua High "Mighty Mules" JROTC Leadership Team and the Waimea High Menehune Battalion will compete at the 2017 Army JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl in Washington DC.

Leilehua's team is composed of Cadet Faith Boyce-Jennings, Cadet Morgan Burks, Cadet Kobee Ledward, Cadet Janarah Jones, and team alternate Cadet Essence Johnson. The competition will be held from June 22-27, 2017, and is sponsored by the Army JROTC and conducted by the College Options Foundation.

Forty Army JROTC Leadership Bowl teams in the nation have advanced to JLAB, which includes an all-expense paid trip to the Championship event in DC. During the two fast-paced preliminary rounds, cadets were tested on their knowledge of current events, leadership values and leadership skills.

The Leilehua High JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,378 Army JROTC teams that competed from around the world. JLAB is a nationally recognized competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, academic competition, and college opportunity. The competition creates tremendous opportunities for JROTC cadets by allowing them to demonstrate leadership and academic abilities.

College Options Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the academic development of high school students and assisting them in their preparation for higher education. Using academic competitions, college exam study guides, college admissions tutorials and personalized counseling, College Options Foundation has assisted the nation's JROTC cadets worldwide for over a decade.

Congratulations to Megan Ayala, Joshua Campos, Ahryana Cruz, Raelin Fajardo, Morgan Perez, Savannah Ramos, and Cody Retuta for a job well done. There were over 900 submissions and two of our entries were selected as finalists in these two categories: Start Living Healthy and Vote to Rise. They won in the Vote to Rise category. GO MULES!

Bus Passes

BUS PASS POLICIES the student lost or misplaced the pass, the bus driver is expected to check the rider manifest to confirm the student’s eligibility status: o Middle school and elementary school students who fail or refuse to display a valid bus pass in the mornings will be transported to school. OFF-CAMPUS PASS / EARLY RELEASE

Any request to leave campus must be made in writing and submitted to the school office before the school day begins. Requests by a parent/legal guardian must include the following information: *student’s legal name, *home telephone number, *phone number where the parent/guardian can be reached, *date/time for release, reason for release, *time student will return to school (if applicable). IF NO REQUEST IS MADE BEFORE SCHOOL BEGINS, AUTHORIZED PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN MUST BE PRESENT FOR RELEASE. The student is responsible for presenting his/her off-campus pass to his/her teachers on the following school day. Students found off campus without a valid off-campus pass are subject to arrest for truancy.

Senior Recognition Seniors: Reminder: College acceptance letters, scholarship offers and military commitment papers must be submitted to the College & Career Center in HH101 by 5/12/17 for recognition in the graduation program. We can’t celebrate your accomplishments if we don’t know about them so please share with us. We can also provide you with assistance in completing your requirements for college enrollment, FAFSA help, military enlistment, or preparing for job interviews. We are open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily. Seniors: Final Transcript Requests Seniors: All seniors attending college need to submit one (1) Final Transcript Request form to the Registrar’s Office for Leilehua High School to mail your final transcript to the college you plan to enroll in the Fall 2017. If you need to confirm your eligibility for collegiate sports through NCAA or NAIA, then you must also submit a Final Transcript Request form for Leilehua High School to mail your transcript. The cost is $2.00 per transcript. Final Transcript Requests will be processed in early June and will include all final grades and proof of your graduation. Final Transcript Request Forms are available in the College & Career Center and the Registrar’s Office. Planning for Post High Using Naviance All Leilehua High School students have a Naviance.com account on which they do college and career exploration and research and build a resume. Students complete different tasks each school year in order to narrow down college and career choices. It is strongly encouraged that students use Naviance in the summer to continue planning for their futures. LHS PTSO NEWS……..

PTSO would like to give A BIG MAHALO to all of the parents who donated for teacher appreciation week!!!!! We could not have had such a successful event without all of the parents help! We were able to make sure that none of our teachers went hungry.

PTSO would also like to invite any parents who would like to join PTSO next year to please fill out an application. PTSO is losing most off its board members this year and we are currently looking for a Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
