  • Lviemoirs of JOHN KNOX
GENEALOGICAL lVIEMOIRS OF JOHN KNOX AXIJ OF THE FAMILY OF KNOX BY THE REV. CHARLES ROGERS, LL.D. fF'.LLOW OF THE ROYAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY, FELLOW OF THE SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES OF SCOTLAXD, FELLOW OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF XORTHER-N A:NTIQ:;ARIES, COPENHAGEN; FELLOW OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW SOCTH WALES, ASSOCIATE OF THE IMPRRIAL ARCIIAWLOGICAL SOCIETY OF Rl'SSIA, MEMBER OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF QL'EBEC, MEMBER OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA, A!'i'D CORRESPOXDING MEMBER OF THE HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF NEW ENGLA:ND PREF ACE. ALL who love liberty and value Protestantism venerate the character of John Knox; no British Reformer is more entitled to the designation of illustrious. By three centuries he anticipated that parochial system of education which has lately become the law of England; by nearly half that period he set forth those principles of civil and religious liberty which culminated in a system of constitutional government. To him Englishmen are indebted for the Protestant character of their "Book of Common Prayer;" Scotsmen for a Reforma tion so thorough as permanently to resist the encroachments of an ever aggressive sacerdotalism. Knox belonged to a House ancient and respectable; but those bearing his name derive their chiefest lustre from 1eing connected with a race of which he was a member. The family annals presented in these pages reveal not a few of the members exhibiting vast intellectual capacity and moral worth. \Vhat follows is the result of wide research and a very extensive correspondence. So many have helped that a catalogue of them ,...-ould be cumbrous.

A SOCIETY IN TRANSITION: THE PROTESTANT COMMUNITY IN TYRONE 1836-42 DARAGH EMMETT CURRAN THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PH.D DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: PROFESSOR RAYMOND GILLESPIE SEPTEMBER, 2010 A society in transition: The Protestant community of County Tyrone 1836-42. Daragh Emmett Curran This thesis deals with the transition that was taking place in Protestant society in the immediate pre-famine period in County Tyrone. It explores how this community, at all social levels, reacted to the changes that were occurring and which were considered detrimental to its position of dominance in society. These changes had the potential to dramatically affect the traditional paternalistic relationship that bound the lower classes to their social betters and this study examines how this relationship survived through economic recession, changes in law and order, increasing concessions being granted to Catholics, lessening government support for the Protestant Church, and the suppression of the dominant Protestant association of the time- the Orange Order. The Order played an integral part in the lives of many Protestants and was an organization that transcended the class divide. Because of this, it becomes the pivot around which this work revolves as the Order, with its wide-stretching network, helped maintain the patriarchal relationship that bound the classes together. It is also a useful tool through which to examine attitudes towards law and order within the Protestant community as changes within this area, especially within the magistracy, affected the upper classes, the very people that the lower classes looked to for guidance.

Cambridge University Press 0521802717 - The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales, 1216-1377 Edited by Professor David M. Smith and Vera C. M. London Frontmatter More information The Heads of Religious Houses England and Wales – This book is the long-awaited continuation of The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales –, edited by David Knowles, C. N. L. Brooke, and Vera London, which itself is now reissued with substantial addenda by Professor Brooke. This present volume continues the lists from to . In this period further record sources have been provided by episcopal registers, governmental enrol- ments, court records, and so on. Full references are given for establishing the dates and outline of the career of each abbot or prior, abbess or prioress, when known, although the information varies considerably from the richly documented lists of the great Benedictine houses to the small cells where perhaps only a single name or date may be recorded in a chance archival survival. The lists are arranged by order: the Benedictine houses (independent, depen- dencies, and alien priories); the Cluniacs; the Grandmontines; the Cistercians; the Carthusians; the Augustinian canons; the Premonstratensians; the Gilbertine order; the Trinitarian houses; the Bonhommes; and the nuns. An introduction dis- cusses the nature, use, and history of the lists and examines critically the sources on which they are based. . is Professor and Director of the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, University of York. . is co-editor, with David Knowles and Christopher Brooke, of The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales – (). © Cambridge University Press www.cambridge.org Cambridge University Press 0521802717 - The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales, 1216-1377 Edited by Professor David M.

PREFACE. A considerable portion of the Moxtgomert Masit- scripts was printed in the Belfast News- Letter bo early as 1785 and 1786,* when their publication was suspended In consequence of their extent, which In some degree unfitted them for the columns of a newspaper. Besides, It was sug- gested that their intrinsic Interest and importance to a large proportion of the Nobility and Gentry of the Counties of Down and Antrim, required their publication in- permanent and portable form, and hence the origin of the present undertaking. The influential part which the family of Montgomery acted in the affairs of Ulster after its colonization by the Scots, is matter of historic record, and will be found minutely detailed in the sub- sequent pages ; while, in consequence of the matrimonial and other alliances that were gradually formed between the several branches of that distinguished family and other families of rank at the time, there are not a few gentlemen in the counties referred to, who will naturally feel an interest in recurring to these simple, but authen- tic memoirs of their ancestorial dignity.
