Beat Match Brunch with Mother Cyborg 7 This zine is a series of skills and knowledge designed for women identified humans to learn how to DJ. Each section combines personal reflection, technical knowledge, and creativity to guide one on the path of becoming their DJ self. Whether you are a pro and wanna teach someone or a beginner just getting starting, this little book has something for you. DJing as a creative medium is nearly 50 years old and women have been traditionally left out of the narrative. This Zine was created in efforts to build community amongst women who have dreams and ambitions of being DJs and Producers. We come together over brunch because learning together with food and drinks makes for a fun, low pressure learning environment where we can both exchange knowledge while building relationships. We teach towards building relationships so we can support each other as we build our talents and skills. We travel in packs to deflect the doubt the world may have about our skills and talents. Together we are a learning network. Use the #HeyDJ to start to shift that narrative. WE SALUTE YOU. HEY DJ!! 10 WRITE IN THE NAMES OF WOMEN DJS THAT INSPIRE YOU! 11 Hey DJ!! Let’s Dance Have you ever thought about what moves people on the dance floor? How can a DJ save a life? Music is a fun mix of sciences, and in this session we want to learn how to identify sounds and think about how they correlate with the body. This will help the DJ with listening and creativity in creating smooth transitions. Remember Cyborgs: there are more than mechanics at work on a dance floor. There is life and all of the complicated things that come with it. If we understand how music makes people move we can respectfully craft a dance floor that is meaningful and unique, adding to the life that is at play on the dance floor. First we begin by listening, moving our body with the beats, and thinking about how we are moving as well as what is making us move. Skills you’ll hopefully walk away with • Articulate what a BPM is in one sentence. • Identify the BPM of a song • Beat match two records together using BPMs as your guide Knowledge gained along the way • Identifying highs, lows, mids and the different instruments that live in each range • The 4/4 musical space/time structure • Understanding that genres have their own BPM range • Understanding how BPMs can be divisible • Understanding that DJ’s shape a *flow* or sequence of music that takes listeners and dancers on a journey But before we begin, let’s get to know each other! #HeyDJ What is a memory of music you have that had a major impact on who you are today? If you're up for it use the #HeyDJ to share your story with the internet. 12 Ok first things first… let’s get to know BPMs, Downbeats, and Upbeats. The BPM is the tempo or speed of a piece of music. Tempo is usually measured in by beats per minute (BPM). DOWN BEAT BPM = BEATS PER is the first beat of the bar MINUTE UP BEAT is the last beat in the previous bar which immediately precedes, and hence anticipates, 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 the downbeat Take a moment to listen to some music and see if you can identify when different sounds hit the down beat (1 and 3’s) or the upbeat (2’s and 4’s). While you’re listening ask yourself a few questions: WHAT ABOUT WHAT PART THE TRACK IS OF YOUR BODY MAKING YOU MOVE? IS MOVING? SOME CYBORG KNOWLEDGE I’ve noticed that with music that hits on the down beat (like hip hop or house music) my head bobs down, and with music that hits on the upbeat (like reggaeton and cumbia) my chest and hips pop up. When you are DJing you will want to think about this when choosing your tracks so you don’t jerk people around. Also when mixing records together you can beat match with different sounds as long as they hit on the same beat. This is helpful for DJs that play more melodic records. You can get really creative once you get the hang of identifying sounds and their patterns. 13 HEY DJ!! LETS DANCE BPM’s and Genres Each genre lives in a BPM or tempo range. The genre is also shaped by how the musical instruments are arranged. Below is a list of western and european musical genres that mostly make up popular music in the @mother- cyborg world. There are many many more music styles that are not included in this list. Keep in though, that whatever the musical genre, it will have a BPM range! The best way to understand it is to begin by listening. Cumbia 60–80 Trap 140 Hip Hop 80–115 Jit/Juke/Footwork 160 Triphop / Downtempo 90–110 Drum and Bass 160–180 Salsa 120–140 Merengue 180–200 House 118–135 Techno 120–160 Dub step 70–75* *70-75 BPM is equivalent to 140-150 BPM Here is where things get fun. When a BPM gets in the 120s you can divide in half and still match a song that carries half the beat. Essentially, they are the same time, but one has more notes or instruments filling the song space. So 120 is also 60, or 60 is also 120. And 140 is 70, or 70 is 140! It is music space-time continuum madness! What is so cool about this is you can really play with time when creating a flow. If you want to move from techno to cumbia, you can! You can get really creative with remixing old songs with new songs or doing mashups that blow minds. You just gotta do the math. Once you know the BPM you are not confined to genre. As long as you can match the beat… you can move some feet. Why do we start at 60 and end at 200? Well… there is a point in which the human brain can not catch the beat. If its too slow or to fast, the brain won’t register what is going on and it sounds like chaos. I’m not saying it is not possible, but you gotta have a good ear to make it work. #HeyDJ What kind of music do you listen to? What BPM range does it fit in? 14 HOW TO IDENTIFY BPM Feel it Out Listen to the song and pay close attention to the beat. The easiest way to do this is to close your eyes, relax, and feel the pulse of the song. Tap your foot or your fingers or nod your head to this pulse. If you have trouble with this, try to isolate the sound that is making you bob your head or tap your feet. Try first with the instrumental version of the song if it’s available. Do Some Math Use a stop watch or look at a clock with a second hand. When you’re sure you’ve got the rhythm of the song happening, count those beats—your head nods, foot taps, or fingers snaps—for 15 seconds. Take the number of beats you counted, and multiply by 4 to get the number of beats in a whole minute. For example, if you counted 24 beats in 15 seconds, multiply 24 by 4 = 96. The song’s tempo is 96 BPM. You multiply by four, because 60 seconds divided by 15 seconds = 4. To increase accuracy, count beats for longer periods of time and calculate the rate accordingly. Using the same song as in the previous example, if you counted for 30 seconds instead, you might have counted 50 beats instead of 48, which means the tempo is just a little faster: 50 x 2 = 100. (Multiply by two because 60 seconds divided by 30 seconds = 2.) HOW TO ADJUST BPM Once you know the BPM of your record, you have the option of speeding it up or slowing it down by 8 Beats per minute. You’ll see on the right hand side of the record player, and most other devices, there is a bar that you can move up and down. You use that to adjust the speed of your song. Turntablism refers to the use of turntables as musical instruments, essentially to alter and manipulate the sound of recorded music. Audio art refers to the arrangement of excerpts of musical selections, fragments of recorded speech, and ‘found sounds’ in unusual and original ways. The following paper outlines past and current difficulties in regulating these newer genres of music. It reports on an examination of programs from 22 community and campus stations across Canada. Given the abstract, experimental, and diverse nature of these programs, it may be difficult to incorporate them into the CRTC’s current music categories and the current MAPL system for Canadian Content.     "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

In this work, structural sections based on “levels of emotional experience” in electronic dance music (EDM) are investigated by analyzing DJ-created radio mixes using automatic music descriptors in order to get audio content information. Mixes are first manually annotated to categorise structural sections and then, their characteristics and patterns between them are investigated. Finally, various evaluations are performed to explore the accuracy with which a system could automatically detect, with the given information, the different sections within randomly chosen independent ten seconds excerpts. Results prove the reliability of the chosen descriptors to achieve a successful classification with moderate number of errors. Zimmerman, besser bekannt als Deadmau5 (sprich: deadmaus), tritt mit diesem eine Diskussion um Live-Praktiken in der Elec- tronic Dance Music (EDM)1 und die Relevanz des Beatmatching2 als tech- nische Fertigkeit von DJs3 los (Deadmau5 2012, vgl. Attias 2013). Für den hier vorliegenden Beitrag habe ich dieses Statement als Startpunkt meiner Überlegungen genommen: Wenn DJs wirklich nur den Start-Knopf drücken, was sind dann die Fertigkeiten, die ein DJ haben muss und die dann so kunstfertig wie möglich — oder eben: virtuos — auszuführen sind? With the rise of DAW- based composition in popular music styles, many artists’ sole experience of musical creation is through the computer screen. I assert that the particular sonic visualizations of the DAW propagate certain assumptions about music, influencing aesthetics and adding new visually- based parameters to the creative process. I believe many of these new parameters are greatly indebted to the visual structures, interactional dictates and standardizations (such as the office metaphor depicted by operating systems such as Apple’s OS and Microsoft’s Windows) of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Whether manipulating text, video or audio, a user’s interaction with the GUI is usually structured in the same manner—clicking on windows, icons and menus with a mouse-driven cursor. Focussing on the dialogs from the Reddit communities of Making hip-hop and EDM production, DAW user manuals, as well as interface design guidebooks, this dissertation will address the ways these visualizations and methods of working affect the workflow, composition style and musical conceptions of DAW-based producers. iii Dedication To Ba, Dadas and Mary, for all your love and support. iv Table of Contents Abstract ..................................................................................................................
