2017 WASHINGTON CAPITALS DEVELOPMENT CAMP Kettler Capitals Iceplex • Arlington, Va. June 27 - July 1, 2017 Capitals Development Camp Notes The Washington Capitals will host their 2017 Prospect Development Camp CAMP SCHEDULE from June 27 to July 1, 2017 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public. Tuesday, June 27 Capitals Fan Fest Capitals development camp is an annual, week-long summer session with 9 a.m.: Defense on ice (Public rink) on- and off-ice workouts designed to help Capitals prospects improve their 9 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Capitals rink) games and allow the Capitals to evaluate their progress. This is the 11th 2:15 p.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) consecutive year that the camp is being held at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. 3 p.m.: All players on ice (Capitals rink) Past development camps have been held in Odenton, Md., and Hershey, 4 p.m. Media availability Pa. 5:30 p.m.: Capitals prospects at Fan Fest 7:30 p.m.: Caps Alumni Exhibition Attendees include Capitals prospects who are under contract and recent Post-game: Caps Alumni media availability Capitals draft picks who have not been signed yet. In addition, several undrafted and free agent amateur players will be in attendance. Washington Capitals 2017 Development Camp Guide Camp Storylines Roll Call – All four draft picks from the Capitals 2017 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. The Capitals selected defenseman Tobias Geisser (120th overall), defenseman Sebastian Walfridsson (151st overall), Benton Maass (182nd overall) and Kristian Roykas Marthinsen (213th) in the 2017 NHL Draft, held June 23rd and 24th at United Center in Chicago. Quick Studies – Riley Barber attended last summer’s development camp and appeared in three games with the Capitals in 2016-17. Barber made his NHL debut on Feb. 24 against Edmonton. Seven players who attended the 2016 development camp played for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, during the 2016-17 regular season (Barber, Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, Tyler Lewington, Zach Sanford, Jonas Siegenthaler, Colby Williams) and were joined by Garrett Pilon for their playoff run. Four players (Adam Carlson, Dylan Margonari, Tim McGauley, John Parker) played for Washington’s ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, in 2016-17. Veteran Presence – Brian Pinho will be participating in his fifth development camp this year (2013-17). Pinho, who was selected by the Capitals in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, registered 40 points (12g, 28a) in 39 games with Providence College (NCAA) in 2016-17. Pinho recorded career-highs in points, goals, assists and plus/minus (+17) with the Friars last season and led the team in points and assists. In addition, his 28 assists in 2016-17 were the most by a Providence skater since 2002-03. Pinho, who served as alternate captain last season, was awarded the team’s Lou Lamoriello Award (Team MVP), Gates Orlando Award (most points) and Michael Boback Award (most assists). Immediate Impact – All seven draft picks from the Capitals 2016 NHL Draft will attend this year’s development camp Lucas Johansen, Washington’s first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, registered 41 points (6g, 35a) in 68 games with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) in 2016-17. The 6’2”, 177-pound defensemen recorded a career high in plus/minus (+23) last season and ranked second among Kelowna defensemen in points and assists. Garrett Pilon, the Capitals’ third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, registered 65 points (20g, 45a) in 67 games with the Kamloops Blazers (WHL) last season and led the team in assists, ranked third in points and fourth in goals. The 5’11”, 188-pound center set WHL career highs in goals, assists and points in 2016-17 and recorded 18 multi-point games. Washington’s 2016 fourth-round pick Damien Riat recorded 14 points (7g, 7a) in 46 games with Geneve-Servette HC of the National League A in Switzerland last season. Riat also served as an alternate captain for Switzerland at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and ranked tied for second on the team in points (1g, 5a) at the tournament. Beck Malenstyn recorded 56 points (32g, 24a) in 70 games with the Calgary Hitmen (WHL) last season, ranking second on the team in points and goals and tied for fourth in assists. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby made his Swedish Hockey League (SHL) debut last season with Djurgarden, recording one assist in 24 games. Chase Priskie recorded 26 points (7g, 19a) in 38 games with Quinnipiac University in 2016-17 and ranked second on the team in assists and third in points. Priskie will serve as captain for the Bobcats in 2017-18, becoming just the eighth junior in school history to be selected as Quinnipiac’s captain. Dmitriy Zaitsev recorded 20 points (2g, 18a) in 70 games as a rookie with the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL). Homegrown – Sixteen players who played for the Capitals in 2016-17 were originally drafted by Washington (Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, Riley Barber, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Garrett Mitchell, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Zach Sanford, Chandler Stephenson, Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson). Capitals draftees accounted for 54.0% of the team’s goals, 61.1% of the team’s assists and 58.5% of the team’s points from last season. Oh, Brother – Capitals prospect Lucas Johansen is the younger brother of Nashville Predators center Ryan Johansen. Age Differential – Kristian Roykas Marthinsen (born August 28, 1999), drafted by Washington in the seventh round, 213th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft, is the youngest player attending this year’s development camp. Free agent invite Stephen Collins (born August 10, 1991) is the oldest. Washington Capitals 2017 Development Camp Guide Tyler Anderson Defenseman (89) Free Agent Anderson registered 47 points (18g, 29a) in 50 games with the Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) last season. The 6’4”, 215-pound defenseman led BCHL defensemen in goals, ranked third in points and was a finalist for BCHL defenseman of the year. Anderson is expected to attend Lake Superior St. (NCAA) during the 2017-18 season. Kristofers Bindulis Defenseman (84) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 7, 2017 Bindulis recorded 12 points (1g, 11a) in 28 games with Lake Superior State (NCAA) last season. The 6’3”, 180-pound defenseman ranked third among Lake Superior State defensemen in points and assists and recorded two points (1g, 1a) in his NCAA debut on Oct. 14 against Michigan State. Adam Carlson Goaltender (81) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 28, 2016 Carlson posted a 9-11-2 record with one shutout, a 2.97 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage in 23 games with the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) last season. The 6’3”, 191-pound goaltender recorded his first professional shutout on Nov. 19 against Atlanta. Stephen Collins Right Wing (96) Free Agent Collins registered 48 points (19g, 29a) in 27 games with SUNY- Geneseo (NCAA) last season. The 6’0”, 190-pound right wing was named a First-Team All-American for the second straight season in 2016-17 and was a finalist for the Sid Watson Award, given to the best NCAA DIII player in the country, and USCHO.com Player of the Year. Collins led SUNY- Geneseo in points and assists in 2016-17. Collin Delia Goaltender (39) Free Agent Delia posted a 9-8-3 record with three shutouts, a 2.15 goals against average and a .927 save percentage with Merrimack College (NCAA) last season. The 6’2” 200-pound goaltender ranked tied for first in the Hockey East conference in save percentage and third in goals against average.
