Capitals Development Camp Notes The Washington Capitals will host their 2017 Prospect Development Camp CAMP SCHEDULE from June 27 to July 1, 2017 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public. Tuesday, June 27 Capitals Fan Fest Capitals development camp is an annual, week-long summer session with 9 a.m.: Defense on ice (Public rink) on- and off-ice workouts designed to help Capitals prospects improve their 9 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Capitals rink) games and allow the Capitals to evaluate their progress. Washington Capitals 2017 Development Camp Guide

Camp Storylines Roll Call – All four draft picks from the Capitals 2017 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. The Capitals selected defenseman Tobias Geisser (120th overall), defenseman Sebastian Walfridsson (151st overall), Benton Maass (182nd overall) and Kristian Roykas Marthinsen (213th) in the 2017 NHL Draft, held June 23rd and 24th at United Center in Chicago.

Quick Studies – Riley Barber attended last summer’s development camp and appeared in three games with the Capitals in 2016-17. Barber made his NHL debut on Feb. 24 against Edmonton. Seven players who attended the 2016 development camp played for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the , during the 2016-17 regular season (Barber, Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, Tyler Lewington, Zach Sanford, Jonas Siegenthaler, Colby Williams) and were joined by Garrett Pilon for their playoff run. Four players (Adam Carlson, Dylan Margonari, Tim McGauley, John Parker) played for Washington’s ECHL affiliate, the , in 2016-17.

Veteran Presence – Brian Pinho will be participating in his fifth development camp this year (2013-17). Pinho, who was selected by the Capitals in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, registered 40 points (12g, 28a) in 39 games with Providence College (NCAA) in 2016-17. Pinho recorded career-highs in points, goals, assists and plus/minus (+17) with the Friars last season and led the team in points and assists. In addition, his 28 assists in 2016-17 were the most by a Providence skater since 2002-03. Pinho, who served as alternate last season, was awarded the team’s Lou Lamoriello Award (Team MVP), Gates Orlando Award (most points) and Michael Boback Award (most assists).

Immediate Impact – All seven draft picks from the Capitals 2016 NHL Draft will attend this year’s development camp Lucas Johansen, Washington’s first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, registered 41 points (6g, 35a) in 68 games with the (WHL) in 2016-17. The 6’2”, 177-pound defensemen recorded a career high in plus/minus (+23) last season and ranked second among Kelowna defensemen in points and assists. Garrett Pilon, the Capitals’ third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, registered 65 points (20g, 45a) in 67 games with the (WHL) last season and led the team in assists, ranked third in points and fourth in goals. The 5’11”, 188-pound center set WHL career highs in goals, assists and points in 2016-17 and recorded 18 multi-point games. Washington’s 2016 fourth-round pick Damien Riat recorded 14 points (7g, 7a) in 46 games with Geneve-Servette HC of the National League A in last season. Riat also served as an alternate captain for Switzerland at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and ranked tied for second on the team in points (1g, 5a) at the tournament. Beck Malenstyn recorded 56 points (32g, 24a) in 70 games with the (WHL) last season, ranking second on the team in points and goals and tied for fourth in assists. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby made his Swedish Hockey League (SHL) debut last season with Djurgarden, recording one assist in 24 games. Chase Priskie recorded 26 points (7g, 19a) in 38 games with Quinnipiac University in 2016-17 and ranked second on the team in assists and third in points. Priskie will serve as captain for the Bobcats in 2017-18, becoming just the eighth junior in school history to be selected as Quinnipiac’s captain. Dmitriy Zaitsev recorded 20 points (2g, 18a) in 70 games as a rookie with the (WHL).

Homegrown – Sixteen players who played for the Capitals in 2016-17 were originally drafted by Washington (Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, Riley Barber, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Garrett Mitchell, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Zach Sanford, Chandler Stephenson, Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson). Capitals draftees accounted for 54.0% of the team’s goals, 61.1% of the team’s assists and 58.5% of the team’s points from last season.

Age Differential – Kristian Roykas Marthinsen (born August 28, 1999), drafted by Washington in the seventh round, 213th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft, is the youngest player attending this year’s development camp. Free agent invite Stephen Collins (born August 10, 1991) is the oldest.

Tyler Anderson Defenseman (89) Free Agent

Anderson registered 47 points (18g, 29a) in 50 games with the Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) last season. The 6’4”, 215-pound defenseman led BCHL defensemen in goals, ranked third in points and was a finalist for BCHL defenseman of the year. Anderson is expected to attend Lake Superior St. (NCAA) during the 2017-18 season.

Kristofers Bindulis Defenseman (84) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 7, 2017

Bindulis recorded 12 points (1g, 11a) in 28 games with Lake Superior State (NCAA) last season. The 6’3”, 180-pound defenseman ranked third among Lake Superior State defensemen in points and assists and recorded two points (1g, 1a) in his NCAA debut on Oct. 14 against Michigan State.

Adam Carlson (81) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 28, 2016

Carlson posted a 9-11-2 record with one shutout, a 2.97 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage in 23 games with the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) last season. The 6’3”, 191-pound goaltender recorded his first professional shutout on Nov. 19 against Atlanta.

Stephen Collins Right Wing (96) Free Agent

Collins registered 48 points (19g, 29a) in 27 games with SUNY- Geneseo (NCAA) last season. The 6’0”, 190-pound right wing was named a First-Team All-American for the second straight season in 2016-17 and was a finalist for the Sid Watson Award, given to the best NCAA DIII player in the country, and USCHO.com Player of the Year. Collins led SUNY- Geneseo in points and assists in 2016-17.

Collin Delia Goaltender (39) Free Agent

Delia posted a 9-8-3 record with three shutouts, a 2.15 goals against average and a .927 save percentage with Merrimack College (NCAA) last season. The 6’2” 200-pound goaltender ranked tied for first in the Hockey East conference in save percentage and third in goals against average.

Jimmy DeVito Right Wing (97) Free Agent

DeVito tallied six points (3g, 3a) in 37 games with RPI (NCAA) la. The 5’11”, 170-pound right wing served as captain for RPI during the 2016-17 season.

Kevin Elgestal Right Wing (71) Drafted by WSH in the seventh round, 194th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft

Elgestal registered five points (4g, 1a) in 30 games with Vita Hasten () in 2016-17. The 6’1”, 186-pound right wing recorded a hat trick on Jan. 13 against BIK Karlskoga.

Tobias Geisser Defenseman (46) Drafted by WSH in the fourth round, 120th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Geisser made his National League (Swiss) debut in 2016-17 and recorded one assist in 14 games with EV . The 6’4”, 200-pound defenseman also registered 10 points (3g, 7a) in 34 games with EV Zug’s minor-league affiliate last season, EV Zug Academy. The Stans, Switzerland, native represented Switzerland at the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championship, the 2016 Memorial Cup and the 2016 U20 4 Nations Tournament.

Shane Gersich Left Wing (63) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 134th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft

Gersich earned 37 points (21g, 16a) in 40 games with the University of North Dakota (NCAA) last season. The 5’11”, 175-pound left wing led North Dakota in goals and points in 2016-17 and finished third in the NCHC in goals.

Mattias Goransson Defenseman (91) Free Agent

Gorannsson earned 23 points (5g, 18a) in 39 games with UMass-Lowell (NCAA) last season. The 6’3”, 205-pound defenseman ranked first among Hockey East rookie defensemen in assists in 2016-17. In addition, Gorannsson totaled six multi-point games last season, including a two-point performance in his first career game on Oct. 7 against Minnesota-Duluth.

Hampus Gustafsson Center (67) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 7, 2017

Gustafsson registered 26 points (15g, 11a) in 36 games with Merrimack College (NCAA) last season and led the team

in goals, ranked second in points and fourth in assists. In addition, Gustafsson registered a career high in goals and tied his career high in points (2015-16: 26). The Ljungby, Sweden, native was a nominee for the 2017 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the top NCAA men’s player, and served as an alternate captain for Merrimack during the last two seasons (2015-17).

Connor Hobbs Defenseman (36) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 143rd overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft

Hobbs registered 85 points (31g, 54a) in 67 games with the Regina Pats (WHL) last season. The 6’1”, 202-pound defenseman led all WHL defensemen in points and assists in 2016-17 and ranked second in goals. Hobbs recorded 24 points (6g, 18a) during the WHL Playoffs and helped the Pats reach the WHL Championship. In addition, he was named runner-up for WHL Defenseman of the Year.

Tanner Jeannot Left Wing (73) Free Agent

Jeannot registered 52 points (19g, 33a) in 71 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) last season, registering career highs in points, goals and assists. The 6’3”, 210-pound left wing ranked tied for first among Moose Jaw skaters in overtime goals (2), tied for second in game-winning goals (5), second in minutes (84), fifth in goals and points and tied for fifth in assists.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby Left Wing (45) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 147th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Jonsson-Fjallby made his Swedish Hockey League (SHL) debut last season with Djurgarden, recording one assist in 24 games.

Michael Lackey Goaltender (35) Free Agent

Lackey appeared in six games with Harvard (NCAA) in 2015-16. The 6’4”, 215-pound goaltender made 33 saves in his first collegiate start on Nov. 6, 2015 against Yale and earned first collegiate win with 21 saves in a 5-2 victory against Brown on Nov. 7, 2015. He was named ECAC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 10, 2015.

Benton Maass Defenseman (49) Drafted by WSH in the sixth round, 182nd overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Maass registered 29 points (6g, 23a) in 25 games with Elk River High School (Minnesota) last season. In addition, Maass recorded 16 points (7g, 9a) in 26 games with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL) in 2016-17. The 6’1”, 185-pound defenseman has committed to play at the University of New Hampshire (NCAA) during the 2017-18 season.

Beck Malenstyn Left Wing (47) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 145th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Malenstyn registered 56 points (32g, 24a) in 70 games with the Calgary Hitman (WHL) last season. The 6’3”, 191- pound left wing posted career-highs in goals, assists and points in 2016-17 and led the Hitmen in shorthanded goals and game-winning goals and ranked second on the team in goals and points.

The 6’2”, 206-pound left wing recorded 13 points (11g, 2a) in 25 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) games, including three multi-point games.

Shields posted a 13-7-0 record with one shutout, a 1.91 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 20 games with York University (U Sports) last season. The 6’3”, 195-pound goaltender led his conference in goals- against average and finished second in save percentage.

Jonas Siegenthaler Defenseman (34) Drafted by WSH in the second round, 57th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft

Siegenthaler tallied seven points (1g, 6a) in 28 games with the Zurich Lions (Swiss) in 2016-17. The 6’3”, 230-pound defenseman recorded six points (1g, 5a) at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and served as alternate captain for Switzerland. He ranked tied for third among all defensemen at the tournament in points and fourth in assists. Siegenthaler was selected by the tournament’s coaches as one of Switzerland’s Best Players and was named Switzerland’s Best Player of the Game on Dec. 27 against the Czech Republic.

Spinner registered 21 points (8g, 13a) in 39 games with the University of Nebraska-Omaha (NCAA) last season. The 5’11”, 196-pound right wing posted career-highs in goals, assists and points in 2016-17. Spinner scored two goals against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 18 and against North Dakota on Feb. 24.

Sebastian Walfridsson Defenseman (48) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 151st overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Walfridsson recorded seven points (2g, 5a) in 38 games with Modo Jr. (Sweden-Jr.) last season. The 6’0”, 194-pound defenseman represented Sweden at the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship, the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup and the 2016 Five Nations Tournament. Zaitsev tallied 20 points (2g, 18a) in 70 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) in 2016-17. The 6’0”, 192-pound defenseman led the Warriors in plus/minus (+19) and he registered a four-game point streak from Oct. 8 to Oct. 17.
