Nagy (NAY-ghee) comes to Wright State after 21 seasons at South Dakota State. During that time, he guided the school from Division II to Division I and compiled an overall record of 410-240 (.631). “My family and I are extremely excited for the next chapter in our lives,” said Nagy. “It was clear to me at every step of the interview process that Wright State University has everything in place to have a successful men’s college bas- ketball program. I’m so grateful for the opportunity that President Dr. David Hopkins and Athletic Director Bob Grant have given us.”

As he assessed Mark Alstork’s Jekyll and Hyde night, Scott Nagy, in a nod to diplomacy, said:

He cares “deeply” about everything out there.

The Wright State coach stressed the qualifier, but what he didn’t say was that sometimes the junior guard cares too deeply.

There’s a thin line between deep care and obsession and at times Tuesday night against Miami, Alstork veered over both sides of the line.

Thankfully for the Raiders — in part because of a brief seat on the bench courtesy of Nagy to recompose — Alstork got on the right side of his emotions and took over the game in the final minutes. He helped the Raiders escape with an 89-87 victory after the RedHawks had surged back from a 21-point deficit at halftime.

Alstork ended the game with 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. He scored 16 points in the final 6:14 and accounted for the Raiders’ final 11 points

When he transferred from Ball State three seasons ago, Alstork was the first to admit he arrived here with “a chip” on his shoulder. Former WSU coach Billy Donlon said it was more like a boulder, although he said he referred to it “in a good way.”

Like Nagy, Donlon said Alstork cared deeply about his basketball.

When he came here, Alstork, who had starred as a prep player at Thurgood Marshall High School, said he wanted to prove himself. He felt he had hadn’t gotten a chance to truly show himself in his one season at Ball State, although he did start 15 of 30 games.

After sitting a year to adhere to NCAA transfer rules, he began to come into his own last season for the Raiders and coming into this year was their most experienced player.

When the Horizon League preseason teams were announced he was a second-team selection. He said nothing about it, but if you know him, you know it smoldered inside him. That’s were deep caring and obsession have their inner battles.

“I don’t want to get into what the media says, but I’m not considered a top five player in the league,” he said after Tuesday’s game. “I’ll never lose that chip on my shoulder, not ‘til I’m not being slept on no more and I get recognized for my play.”

Down the stretch, he did it all. He had a pair of blocked shots inside, he hit 3-pointers, drove through the Miami defense for layups and was stellar at the line making 15 of his first 17 attempts — until he had a late lapse when he missed his final three attempts in the last 10.4 seconds.

Although he was upset about that — and his eight turnovers — afterward, he said “I have to own it….It’s all about ownership. The whole game.”

Until he went on his run , Alstork was struggling with a 2 for 10 shooting night and was 1 for 7 from three-point range.,

With just over nine minutes left in the game, Nagy brought him to the bench and had him sit for about 2 ½ minutes.

“I sat him down just to help him get calmed down,” Nagy said. “The first 10 minutes of the second half he let too many things gets to him.”

Nagy said: “Sometimes I talk gently to him, sometimes I don’t. That’s no different than I treat anybody.”

This time he said he said nothing to his 6-foot-5 guard.

“Once he came back in he played very well. He made all the big plays for us late.”

Alstork said he tries to channel Kobe Bryant’s mantra about “focusing on the next play no matter what just happened.”

It worked, Nagy admitted:

“Most guys would love to get his line: 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. And yet he’d be the first to tell you he didn’t play very good.”

“He’ll get it all figured out.”

It’ll happen, Nagy said, because he cares so deeply.

WSU’s Davis embracing breakout season by Marc Pendleton

Steven Davis is hoping to cram a career’s worth of basketball into his senior season. No blaming him for that, not when most of his time at Wright State University has been on injured reserve.

“I look forward to every game,” Davis said following Thursday night’s 81-62 setback to Oakland (Mich.) in what also served as one of four Horizon League men’s college basketball openers.

This has been a breakout season for the 6-foot-8 senior. That’s understandable, because until now foot injuries had derailed him, especially the last two seasons. He redshirted as a freshman in 2012-13 and played sparingly the next season. He initially injured a foot against Ohio State and missed the second half of the 2014-15 season. More leg and foot injuries forced him to miss all of last season.

Now healthy, he’s started all 14 games for WSU (9-5, 0-1) and is second in scoring (15.1 points) behind Mark Alstork (20.4). Davis also leads the Raiders in blocks (10) to go with 4.5 rebounds. He’s shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor (72 of 146) and is second to Alstork in 3’s (21 of 57).

That’s the kind of potential that enticed former WSU coach Billy Donlon to recruit the Indianapolis Manual High School standout.

“He’s had a good year,” WSU coach Scott Nagy said. “He’s hardly played his whole career. He’s been able to stay healthy this year and he’s been a good player for us.”

Davis already has established himself as an ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 favorite this season. Against Cedarville in a Nov. 3 exhibition, his alley-op dunk off a feed from Alstork rocketed to the No. 4 spot on ESPN’s Top 10 plays from that day. His spike against Urbana on Dec. 13 topped that by vaulting to No. 2 on ESPN’s Top 10 list.

“It went crazy on the internet,” Davis said to horizonleague.org. “It had like 500,000 hits within an hour.”

Davis seems to draw strength from his signature long and braided locks that are popular with many football and basketball players. He also had a monster throw-down against Oakland.

If he’s to do that again at struggling Detroit (2-11, 0-1) on Saturday, he’ll have to maneuver around the Titans’ Jaleel Hogan. The emerging 6-7, 250-pound junior had a career-high 22 points and eight blocks in Thursday’s 81-70 HL opening loss to visiting Northern Kentucky.

“I’m trying to focus on getting better every day with the guys and us getting better as a team and moving on and moving forward,” said Davis, WSU’s only senior starter and one of only two on the roster. “We’ve just got to bounce back next (at Detroit).”

Mitchell making things happen for Wright State By Jay Morrison - Staff Writer

When Wright State coach Scott Nagy scoured the boxscore after his team rallied from 11 points down to beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee 70-67 Saturday, there were a couple of numbers that caught him by surprise.

Not only did junior guard Justin Mitchell have a double-double, and not only were his 21 points and 12 rebounds game highs, they were career highs.

“I was a little shocked by both,” Nagy said. “The rebounding part, though, I shouldn’t be surprised. He’s almost our leading rebounder every game.”

It’s just that Mitchell has this smoothness to his game that allows him to go from a supporting role to a dominating one without drawing much attention. The Raiders are hoping to see more of that Friday night against Detroit at the Nutter Center.

The Raiders (12-7 overall, 3-3 Horizon League) beat the Titans (4-14, 2-4) 85-72 in Detroit on New Year’s Eve, when Mitchell had another one of his quietly effective outings with nine points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

The 6-foot-4 junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., had never had a double-double before recording 18 points and 10 rebounds in an 80-75 loss to Youngstown State on Jan. 7. Now he has two in his last three games following Saturday’s outing at Milwaukee, where the 21 points tied the career high he set earlier this year against Division II Urbana and the 12 rebounds topped his previous high of 11, which he set Dec. 3 at Penn State and tied two weeks later at Kent State.

“He’s got a good nose for the ball and he’s a good athlete,” Nagy said of the 6-foot-4 Mitchell, who leads the Raiders with 7.5 rebounds per game. “He’s a good offensive rebounder because he plays point, and point guards don’t block out generally. “

While Mitchell may play point guard, it’s only because the team, as Nagy often points out, doesn’t have a true No. 1 guard. It’s a deficiency the Raiders are often able to mask thanks to Mitchell’s solid play, but it can become an issue against a pressure defense like WSU saw at Wisconsin-Green Bay in a 78-61 loss.

And the Raiders could face a similar style Friday night against the Titans.

“They’re playing a little bit differently than when they played us before,” Nagy said. “They’re pressuring more. It’s very helter-skelter. And with our team, we don’t take care of the ball really well. We don’t have a bunch of primary ball handlers, so it certainly makes us nervous. They’re going to come after us. And we have to be able to take care of the basketball for us to win the game.”

Mitchell had just one turnover against Green Bay, which is one of the best in the league at forcing them with an average of 15 per game.

In addition to leading the team in rebounds, Mitchell also ranks first in steals (1.1) and is second in assists (3.1) and third in scoring (11.2). And among players averaging at least three shots per game, Mitchell’s field goal percentage of 51.6 is tops.

“He’s shooting a great percentage even though at this point everybody kind of knows he’s not a great jump shooter,” Nagy said. “But he’s smart about that. He doesn’t do what he’s not good at it and he does what he’s good at.

“That’s what makes a good player, guys that know our strengths,” Nagy continued. “And I think that he does.”
