An Archaeological Desk-based Assessment Sygrave, J Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2006, 39pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeology South-East An archaeological desk-based assessment of the site of the Former National Temperance Hospital was carried out. Prior to the post-medieval period the site appeared to have been situated in farmland to the north of the Totten Hall Manor and was described as pasture land in a survey of the manor in 1694. In 1789 the land was leased to St. James’, Piccadilly for 99 years for use as that church’s third burial ground, and a chapel and vicarage erected. The present site occupies the front of the land leased to St. James’, on which the church buildings were constructed, and a small portion of the known cemetery. The Metropolitan Burials Act of 1853 resulted in the closure of the cemetery and by 1871 the chapel had been sold to the parish of St. Pancras and by 1887 the cemetery turned into a public garden, St. James Park. In 1875 the land surrounding the church was sold to enable the construction of the National Temperance Hospital. The majority of the hospital buildings on site were single basemented. The Hospital went through several phases of construction and suffered heavy bomb damage during World War II. However, the hospital buildings were repaired by 1947 and continued in use until recent years as part of the NHS. St. James’ church was demolished in the early 1960s. It was known that the chapel/church had a crypt but it had not been possible to learn if this was emptied prior to the demolition of the church. [Au(abr)]

Cartographic evidence shows that the site remained essentially undeveloped until the Victorian period when a mortuary and Coroner's Court were built upon the site. The stables from the site were developed into the current dwellings and the site of the mortuary has become the rear garden. The site was first developed between 1800 and 1845 with two large villas. From 1910 onward, the site was developed as the former Putney Hospital. On the basis of the available evidence, it was suggested that the archaeological impact of the proposed development be mitigated by the implementation of an archaeological monitoring exercise.
