Chapter 1 ALMOST THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE ‘It was brilliant to see Paul Weller coming on as substitute against Scunthorpe. His courage and determination provide an example to us all. I hadn’t realised just how serious his operation had been until I read a piece about him in the local rag. I will spare you the details. Suffice it to say this illness is a pig. It often greatly inconveniences people living quite sedentary lives. To have overcome this disability and to have returned to life as a professional sportsman is an incredible achievement. I’m rooting for you Paul along with everyone else.’ A BURNLEY FAN, Tim Quelch, wrote that in a fanzine way back in October 1999 .

As a Geordie and a Newcastle United supporter, I always kept a keen interest on what was happening on Tyneside in the early stages of my career at Southampton and Blackburn. Although it was common for clubs to sign foreign players in the early 1990s, the market wasn’t saturated the way it is now, but it was certainly unusual for teams to invest in foreign goalkeepers. And Pavel’s arrival on Tyneside certainly caused a stir. He turned up on the club’s doorstep when it was struggling at the wrong end of the old Second Division. It must have been a baptism of fire for the young Czech goalkeeper. Not only did he have to adapt to a new style of football he had to settle in to a new town and culture.

Classroom activities and resources: Olympics and sports special edition 1 Version 3 – June 2012 Contents Introduction ................................................................................................................. 3 Classroom Activities ................................................................................................... 4 Olympic Refugees ....................................................................................................... 4 Fabrice Muamba, the refugee who has made football his home ......................... 8 The Guardian, Saturday 17 March 2012 ................................................................... 8 2 Version 3 – June 2012 Introduction In summer 2012, London will be under the spotlight when it hosts the Olympic Games. Athletes and spectators from all around the world will arrive in the United Kingdom to be part of the Games. This unique event allows different cultures to come together and mix (for athletes this will mean living together in the Olympic Village). For many athletes, the Olympics are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their country in a global event. Many migrants and refugees have risen to that stage and represented the country that granted them asylum. In 2008, Lopez Lomong (born in what is now South Sudan) was given the honour of representing his country of asylum, the United States. He was also chosen to be the US flag bearer. The basketball star Luol Deng will be representing Team GB at the Olympics. Deng fled his home country, Sudan, as a child and sought asylum with his family in the UK. Another refugee athlete hit the headlines in 2012: Fabrice Muamba, the Bolton Wanderers football player who suffered a heart attack while playing an FA Cup match. Despite having arrived in Britain at the age of 11, unable to speak any English, Muamba went on to achieve 10 GCSEs and A-levels in English, French and Maths.

PANDO! or GORDO? 2010 FIFA World Cup TICKER: USA out-of-contract defender JAY DEMERIT is entertaining offers from BLACKPOOL, LEEDS UNITED & SHEFFIELD UNITED .. .. Match 62: GERMANY v ESPANA [ Semi-Finals ] Date: WED 7Jul10 Venue: Durban DURBAN STADIUM PANDO! or GORDO? GORDO? + Maybe the signs just weren’t there .. .. 1) PAUL THE GENIUS OCTOPUS picks ESP! And, he lives in GER .. .. 2) Just hours before the Semi-Final, former GER Captain MICHAEL BALLACK was asked to leave the GER camp after he got into a spat with current captain PHILLIP LAHM who told BALLACK that he will not give up the captaincy even when BALLACK returns! 3) And, some nutter runs onto the pitch in the fourth minute! Maybe he too sensed the lack of urgency for GER and wanted to perk them up .. .. whatever .. .. GER didn’t attack very much in the first-half simply because they didn’t get the ball .. .. Their first counterattack effort didn’t come until the 22nd minute .. .. ESP was outshooting GER 4-0 before GER’s lone first-half effort in the 32nd minute .. .. In perhaps a preview of future attractions, CARLES PUYOL got on the end of an ESP CK in the 16th minute and crushed his header high .. .. Was it me or did it seem like GER was playing in a bog? Perhaps the pitch wasn’t in the best condition, but GER looked very laboring .. .. But ESP’s PEDRO was buzzing all over and DAVID VILLA was making his runs .. .. But Déjà vu finally did strike when PUYOL came charging out of the back, jumped over a teammate and crushed home a CK from Xavi to the clinch the deal .

The prize on offer was a place in the money-spinning Premiership for 2006/07, with the play off final generally acknowledged as the single most lucrative event in sport. Nick Harris in the Independent: “Never in the history of professional sport has one single fixture been as valuable as tomorrow's Championship play off between Leeds United and Watford. The £21m earned by Evander Holyfield when he beat Mike Tyson in their 1997 rematch - the richest prize fight ever - is small beer by comparison. The £10m on offer when teams vie for Champions' League qualification is a relative pittance. Beckford, Hulse and Bennett at the end of a disastrous afternoon “A win tomorrow would be worth £41m to Leeds, and £39m to Watford. This is new, extra income they will earn if they win, according to detailed analysis by The Independent.
