Volume 17, Number 4 November 2006 PRESIDENT’S LETTER By Donald D. Stull [[email protected]] University of Kansas Anthropology, or any other subject, cannot avoid the context in which it is done. And we cannot afford to be out of touch with our times. Paul Bohannon n the November 2006 issue of Anthropology News, Elizabeth Tunstall announces that American anthropology suffers from a I“branding problem,” and she reports on preliminary research, which concludes, “the popular perceptions of anthropology are of a field engaged in the scientific study of primitive peoples (exoticism) or the distant past (dirt, bones, and Indiana Jones,” (Anthropology News 47(8): 17, 2006). More than a decade ago, Paula Rubel and Abraham Rosman observed that anthropology finds itself “in a stage of disintegration and fragmentation into myriad subdisciplines, subspecialties, and interest groups, all of which empha- size their differences and uniqueness rather than what they have in common” (Journal of Anthropo- logical Research 50(4):335, 1994). It still does. Anthropology, it would seem, is not only misunderstood by what we like to call “the Other,” but roiling with internecine dissension and turmoil. NARA | GOAL THREE August 2011 - March 2013 Cumulative Report RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Northwest Advance Renewables Alliance NARA is led by Washington State University and supported by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grant no. 2011-68005-30416 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Goal Three: Rural Economic Development: Enhance and sustain rural economic development Summary Sustainability is the crucial attribute necessary for the emerging biofuels industry to develop our rural economy. The NARA project is assessing sustainability of this emerging industry using a triple bottom line approach of assessing economic viability (techno-economic analysis – TEA), environmental impact (life cycle analysis – LCA), and social impact (community impact analysis – CIA). In addition to developing these three primary analytical tools, additional primary data is being collected. These data include social and market data through the Environmentally Preferred Products (EPP) team and environmental data through the Sustainable Production Team. The following efforts within the Systems Metrics program are integrated to provide a sustainability analysis of the project: The Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) Team assesses the overall economics of the biofuels production process from feedstock delivered to the mill gate through to biojet sale. This analysis includes the overall production mass and energy balance as well as the value needs for co-products. The TEA models the capital requirement plus the variable and fixed operating costs for producing biojet from forest residuals using our chosen pathways. The Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Community Impact Team assesses the environmental impact of producing aviation biofuels with our chosen pathway and compares it to the petroleum products for which it will substitute. -

'1. Multilinear Euolution: Eaolution and Process' THEMEANING Of EVOLUIION Cultural evolution, although long an unfashionable concept, has commanded renewed interest in the last two decades. This interest does not indicate any seriousreconsideration of the particular historical reconstructions of the nineteenth-century evolutionists, for thesc were quite thoroughly discredited on empirical grounds. It arises from the potential methodological importance of cultural evolution for con- temporary research, from the implications of its scientific objectives, its taxonomic procedures, and its conceptualization of historical change and cultural causality. An appraisal of cultural evolution, therefore, must be concerned with definitions and meanings. But I do not wish to engage in semantics. I shall attempt to show that if certain distinc- tions in the concept of evolution are made, it is evident that certain methodological propositions find fairly wide acceptance today. Abstract: In this introductory paper, we contemplate both a variety of anthropological approaches to smoke and how analyses of smoke—as object, material, phenomenon, practice, or political fact— might contribute to anthropological knowledge. We consider these questions in and through the themes cross-cutting this collection, including: the sensuous aspects of smoke (especially in the olfactory, visual and haptic relations it occasions, entails and denies); the politics of smoke (in particular regard to climate change, public health, and Indigenous knowledge); smoke’s temporal dimensions (from the human mastery of fire via industrial chimneys to vaping e-cigarettes); and its ritual functions (encapsulating transition par excellence, curing ills, placating spirits, and marking time). We conclude by pondering smoke’s inherent capacity to escape the bounds we might set for it, including the imposition of highly politicised spatial, temporal, and intellectual constraints. Received: 25 October 2011; in revised form: 28 November 2011 / Accepted: 12 December 2011 / Published: 21 December 2011 Abstract: A better knowledge of factors organizing crop genetic diversity in situ increases the efficiency of diversity analyses and conservation strategies, and requires collaboration between social and biological disciplines. Four areas of anthropology may contribute to our understanding of the impact of social factors on crop diversity: ethnobotany, cultural, cognitive and social anthropology. So far, most collaborative studies have been based on ethnobotanical methods, focusing on farmers’ individual motivations and actions, and overlooking the effects of farmer’s social organization per se. After reviewing common shortcomings in studies on sorghum and maize, this article analyzes how social anthropology, through the analysis of intermarriage, residence and seed inheritance practices, can contribute to studies on crop genetic diversity in situ. Crop varieties are thus considered social objects and socially based sampling strategies can be developed. Such an approach is justified because seed exchange is built upon trust and as such seed systems are embedded in a pre-existing social structure and centripetally oriented as a function of farmers’ social identity. -
